"Missing movie manners" - what happened to common courtesy?
Bakosphere stumbled across this July post in the most recent print edition of Bakotopia, but even though it's 6 weeks old, we think it bears an extra look because of its provocative topic: Jordan Russell laments the disappearance of common courtesy in movie theaters. Whether it's talking on cell phone, yakking with friends, spoiled kids throwing tantrums, etc., it's harder than ever to enjoy a movie out. Is it any wonder people would rather spend a small fortune on a big-screen and home theater system to avoid that mess? 22 comments from 15 users

This is why we don't go to the movies, not to mention the ridiculous prices for snacks. If we want to see a movie, we will just wait a couple months and buy it and our snacks at Target. What ruined movies for us was a trip to see Lethal Weapon 4 at Edwards, who were loud, rude and abonixious and kept pointing their laser pointers at the screen. That was it for us. posted by

“About half of the movie goes by, and I’m so enthralled that I forget about anything’s existence but the movie. Just as an intense part comes, a guy roughly 20 years old decides it’d be cool to answer his phone like he’s in the middle of a war-zone. Believe it or not, guy, I don’t enjoy hearing about your commentary on the movie to your friend while I’m watching said movie. Not only was he extremely loud, but his phone resembled a searchlight. If I remember correctly, I’m in a movie; not trying to escape the Cave of Wonders. So of course, my focus was completely turned to this person, and from then on, all I could think about is what I wanted to throw at the back of his head.”
“Why didn’t the guy just ignore the call? Why did he choose to stay on the phone for about 5 minutes? Why does the person he’s talking to need to be informed - through a series of profanities - that someone just got decapitated? With technology advancing more and more rapidly, it seems that it is directly proportional to declining manners.”
The answer to your problem is one of the new compact cell phone jamming units.
I got really tired of people showing up at my business, and being constantly interrupted by cell phone calls. Most of the time, the call concerned something trivial and irrelevant anyway.
I bought a small cell phone jammer, and I turn it on when I arrive in the morning, and turn it off when I leave. Pure bliss! It’s about the size of a pocket transistor radio, (remember them?), and uses rechargeable batteries.
When I go to the occasional big screen movie, I always take my cell phone jammer, and turn it on when the movie starts. Even more pure bliss!

I sometimes go to the dollar theatre and just buy my snacks at the dollar tree!! But it seems EVERYTIME...and Im not exaggerating....but EVERYTIME me and my kids go, some person and their 2-3 small kids (and usually a baby too) come in and where do they sit??? ALWAYS ALWAYS by me!! Im almost becoming paranoid...I think they are following me and torturing me on purpose...and my kids gets so irritated too!! We'll play the game of "where are the noisey people gonna sit." when we see a group with little kids come in. Or what about the young kids that are there without adult supervision? They are little snots too. No manners either. And I always sit as far in the back as possible and AWAY from other moviegoers, but those few dang noisey ones ALWAYS sit by me!! I have Netflix now, so I dont go anymore. Im tired of people taking little kids under 5 to the movies. You always get that one parent who says..."Oh but my little suzie will be so quiet". And its her little suzie(s) who freak out when the lights go out and cry and run up and down the isle and the parent doesnt do ANYTHING!! Then Im forced to yell "SHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!". And yet they are shocked!!! I think a rule of NO BABIES under the age of 1 should be allowed in..but that'll never happen. And then maybe another rule after that of 4 or 5 and younger!! If they have the money to go to the theaters then maybe they should wait till its out on CD and buy it and watch it at home and spare Me...I mean everyone...the headache of listening to their drama!! If you cant tell, this is a sore subject for me!! LMAO!!!! Cause EVERYTIME me and my kids go to the theatre, it ALWAYS happens!! I think these people watch for me and follow me in and sit right behind me!! UGHHHH!!!!! posted by

Donmason here is a friendly word of advice. Use of cell phone jammers are illegal in the United States. The FCC can fine up to $11,000.00 per violation and seize your jammer if you are caught using it. Don't advertise the fact that you have one. Most of them are also pretty exspensive $300.00 or more and need to be recharged every 2 hours of use. Most of the small ones will only cover about 20 foot circle around you. I am not saying don't use it, just don't tell anyone. posted by

I got tired of waiting in the long-line of the Loan Application's being approved (or denied) before we could afford to order our popcorn/soda snacks! We use BlockBuster On-Line I miss enjoying a theater movie (the way it was meant to be viewed) ~ I miss the 80's ... Sweetie ~ you're funny, that happens to me too (everytime) ~ sometimes i wonder 'who raises these types of kids' ... then i look at the parents, they act the same or worse. And the poor employee's that are assigned to 'handle the naughty-crowd' Lord, have mercy, they will get pummeled by the rude bullies, so they are scared to kick-them-out! They should hire bouncers !

Wow! I didn't think is was illegal because it has such low power. It's range is about 50 feet indoors. Doesn't work past 10 feet outdoors. Me thinks I better not use it anymore. Thanks for the heads up :) posted by

We were at Disneyland over the weekend and when our 15 month old (who has learned the fine art of falling on the ground every time he's told no) fell on the ground and howled. His mom gave him a couple of swats through clothing (more vibration than anything) picked him up, stood him on his feet, took his hand hand off he walked. He doesn't get away with it but he sure tries. Like launching his sippy cup them he's though or pissed off. This is the funniest, laughing, good natured little guy on earth..until you say NO. Granddaughter said she got some eyebrows but the kiddo got the message. "Unacceptable behavior." Having worked in retail and restaurants a goodly share of my life, I could write a book about children and their total lack of discipline. As teachers, some of my family could add lots of stories to it. Oh yeah, the kiddo is into head butting..just for giggles..or when thwarted. Ever had your nose head butted? Movies? HA! It's Netflix or babysitter these days. posted by

More D/L stories. We've been having discussions lately about manners..or the lack of. The refusal to acknowledge running to you for instance. I was going through the gate and bumped a 40ish guy with a cane. I said "oh, excuse me, I'm sorry" and he just stomped off without a word." As he was walking away I said pretty loud "Or NOT." I grew up in that era (dinosaur days) when you used manners without thinking about it. The parents of the girl who married my brother were Mr. and Mrs. Baker for as long as I knew them. I couldn't imagine calling them by their first names...not in my wildest dreams. And I grew up around them..lol. Cell phones? Don't EVEN get me started on them. posted by

Dang, Don Mason! Just when you think you've got the perfect solution to a problem it turns out to be illegal with severe penalties! I thought it was a good idea myself until I used the link you provided and saw the price of one of those devices. Does anyone know of a similar device that will disable loud music from a car stereo? Maybe something like an electromagnetic pulse. I don't want to disable the car, just that damn loud thumping music that vibrates the walls of your house and makes you feel like your the target of an Arc Light Strike. posted by

IMO, nobody should be allowed in a theater with a ringing cell phone. Vibrating only. Then, if someone gets a call he wants, he MUST take it in the lobby. If the offenders were ejected from the theater for not obeying the rules, perhaps the practice would cease. Just maybe. One other thing: gum should be prohibited. Period. No gum-chewing. No gum-popping. No gum-cracking. No bubblegum. No bubbles. No bubble-heads. And all food must be chewed with the mouth closed. Is that too much to ask? Yes, I know. It is. posted by

I took my 80 year old mother to see Passion of the Christ. Two ladies sitting in front of us were chatting it up and crinkling cellophane candy wrappers during the whole show. I wanted to knock their heads together. That was the last show I ever went to. posted by

We went to Colorado on vacation, I guess all the people with a little courtisy are there..... or about 100 miles east of Ca lol, people in Ut, CO, NE, NM, & AZ east of Flagstaff were great. As far as the jammers go, they are illegal but then again so is using the GMRS radios sold at Walmart, Big5, Sports authority, etc without a licence & no one ever gets busted, guess the Funny Candy Company (FCC) has better things to do. posted by

Sweetypie- You are so right, it happens to me to like 9 out of 10 times, but IMHO i think what's as just as worse is you know on the screen when it says if you can please turn off your cell phones right before the movie starts, well right after that a cell phone goes off right by me. I just hate when that happens, and it always has to be right next to me. And its not only one person either. They also sit there and talk for about 10 mins into the movie, geez that is just so annoying. posted by

The problem is that people now days expect to be told exactly what to expect. If you don't give explicit instructions, they simply cannot function. "Common sense" isn't common. Look at any pre-movie show and look at all the reminders about texting and talking on the phone, and talking during the movie.. So basically, we've taken that aspect of self-dignity out of the equation. I am no longer responsible for deciding when it's appropriate to talk/chat/telephone - instead, I will rely on someone else letting me know when it's INappropriate - and I can do as I AM ENTITLED TO DO any other time. The same goes for these asinine cell phone / texting while driving laws. Its far easier to rally behind a politician who wants to demonize the technology - without addressing the fundamental issue: people LACK COMMON SENSE. For people like this, we can only blame ourselves. Their parents didn't teach them, their teachers didn't want the burden - or couldn't get the message across. And WE, today as a society, just look the other way and make snide facebook status comments instead of confronting the idiots and setting their asses straight! The amount of this passive-aggressiveness is cumulating each day, to the point where we'll all be Canadians by the end of the year. So yeah, you'll know me when I see you around town - because if you slack in the least, I will get in your face and let you know - since your parents obviously FAILED to teach you jack. posted by

Anyone saying its specifically Cali, or any place really, is seriously deluded. I've seen movies in most major metros in the US, and I can tell you its invariable - the majority of our nation has begun degeneration and has the same woes... Maybe in a few small towns, where you're still allowed to swat your neighbor's kids if they act a fool, will you see any form of discipline. But in the rest of the litiguous states of America, no one would dare touch a kid, even their own, lest they incur the wrath of child protective services! Kids today can't be told "NO", and they can't ever be let to feel the agony of defeat. Everyone's a winner, and you're a superstar! posted by

Good post, Heinz. It seems that there has been too much emphasis on peoples' rights and not enough on the responsibilities to the community. Too many people view a swat on a kid's bottom as corporal punishment when it is actually just a means of re-focusing the kid's attention and establishing a boundary. posted by

when someone is on their phone, or carrying on a conversation inside the movie...i stand up and address the perp and the problem at hand and ask them nicely to cease if they continue, i go get the ushers and explain the situation. the two times i got the ushers, the crowd in the movie was cheering when the ushers hauled the guilty out of the movie
