Noisy drunks from Bakersfield ruin camping trip

Loud, drunk partiers from Bakersfield who like to cuss at the top of their lungs in the middle of the night ruined a recent Sequoia camping trip for Kate Gale and her family.

Kate's blog post captures the chaos, and includes this passage:

"They have a lot Bud Light and Natty Light, they explain they come up here to get loud, I ask why they didn’t go to the lake, isn’t that what lakes are for?  Why the Sequoias?  But arguing with these people, doesn’t seem wise.  There are eight people, five men with shaved heads, tattoos, military guys who bench a lot when they aren’t curling beer."

Not hard to imagine why they cut their campout short.

She also mentions a camping trip in the area last year that was capped by seeing gang members sporting a machine gun. She might want to hunt for a new spot for the next campout.

where were the park rangers?

we enjoy our 'fun' when camping too, but would never be so beligerant to ruin the fun times of others in the vicinity.

i hope they dont think ALL of Bako is this rude, although ~ it IS becomming worse and worse !

And don't forget, now we can carry guns in National Parks. Guns and beer, life is good!

The exact same thing happened to us last year.  We were relaxing in our travel trailer at White River at about 10:00pm, after having gotten the kids to bed, and this "family" of weirdos showed up, in the pitch darkness.  They (mainly Dad) were all yelling and screaming and complaining, trying to put up their tents in complete darkness, running their truck engines so they would have light, and just generally being noisy jerks for over an hour.  Then, bright and early the next day, they blared their music at TOP VOLUME, dragged out their beer, and started yelling and complaining again, about not being able to find this, not being able to find that, not being able to find this, then trotted over to the creek to fish and barked that the music WASN'T LOUD ENOUGH, yelling and cussing.  It was pure misery.  They were the camping neighbors from hell.  FROM HELL!!!  We were leaving that day anyway, but we cut our camping trip about 5 hours short and returned early to the peace and quiet of the city.

I wonder if it was the same people.  Haha!

I don't get the whole "from Bakersfield" part. We have no monopoly on loud mouth people who drink beer. That's about 20% of the population.

Frank, you'll learn that on here when people want to criticize local people it's like it doesn't happen anywhere other than Bakersfield.  It's a favorite past time.  Bakersfield bashing 101.

No one else has crooked cops, crooked politicians, gang bangers, murder, robbery, graffiti, race issues, illegal immigrant issues or any other bad thing....only Bakersfield.

Wait a minute, Nancy ... Kerntown still has ed Jagels after everything and all .

Nancy, in her blog Kate said she went over and talked to the guys and they were from Bakersfield. Then the Bakosphere blog reported it and since they are called "Bakosphere" they put in the guys were from Btown. You are right, you can bad people from everywhere.

OK OK

after viewing her blog-site, and seeing some of the titles for blog-posts ... i almost wonder about this 'family'

not saying that loud-beligerant cursing drunks are OK, not at all... but did you all ready thru her Blog?  LOL

goldie, I read some of the more provocative titles, they are tame. She is  a pretty good writer.

I guess I am a "nobody" because I don't know what kind of wine goes with the hot dogs Kate was eating.  Maybe Thunderbird?  Mixed with powdered Kool Aid?  This woman sure has a lot of problems, where ever she goes, with people from Bakersfield, with Asians, and other assorted people.  She does tell us she enjoyed the movie District 9, which had a lot of noise and fighting, so this tells us something about her class status.  Maybe Kate should  have consumed more hot dogs and less wine?

Pike, I was just responding to Franks comment.   People are all the time saying things like "Only in Bakersfield" and '"What do you expect, it's Bakersfield."  I take exception to that and usually comment.  I'm like a one person cheerleading team for our fair city and while it has it's problems, isn't much different than most other cities of it's size across the country.

My suggestion to people with that attitude is traffic problems?  Rudeness?  Riots?  Crime?  Congestion?  Smog? .....Move to Los Angeles, then get back to me.

posted by pikebishop on Sep 8, 2009 at 10:41 AM

I think all cities have unique problems, and I certainly do not mean to single Bakersfield out. I'm pretty liberal, but if I lived in Santa Monica I would probably wonder why all the nuts are there. I try to be fair to where I live, warts and all.

And a guy like jagels can be a success and make as much as the U.S. president does while he's doing it, too.

This is why I go camp off the beaten path so to speak, if you get away from the campgrounds right on the paved rds you avoid ALOT of problems. As far as carring guns in a National park, that is only if you have a valid CCW for the state the park is in, also if you do have a CCW & you are carrying a concealed weapon & you are drinking you get a few extra charges added onto whatever charges you would normally get, same goes in town too, if you get a DUI & you are carrying the fine is alot more & you lose your right to carry. Most people that have a CCW don't want to lose it (you have a fair amount of money tied up in it in the first place) so they normally will obey the law.

VIrgil, I feel like I'm slumming in the gutter trying to reason with you.  Okay, we get it, you're a knee-jerk lib who can only opine about any topic with anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American dribble.  So, see, you don't have to post anymore.  We understand.  It's done.

This particular blog topic is about a group of ruffians at a national park.  It isn't about your hatred of Jagel, Weir or anybody else.  But I'm sure we will be deluged with a few more one-sentence posts every time your knee jerks up.  Can't wait.

Nancy, no matter what, Bakersfield will always have the reputation it has.

Makes you wonder why the town is 10 times bigger than it was when we were youngsters. I mean, all those people moving here can't all be coming here for country music, cowboy cops, hot, smoggy, and foggy weather, meth labs, mean justice, peckawoods and illegal aliens. lol We must have some attraction. Maybe it's being covered with parasites after dipping into the Hart Park pond.

Which is why I embrace our reputation. Imagine if people thought we were the cultural center of the West Coast!

jimabbot, I am sure that the vast majority of people who have the carry permit are law-abidiing, sober citizens (I sure as hell hope so), but people with guns scare me, and people with guns and booze are even worse. I have long advocated that along with the carry permit, gun owners be required to wear the little beanies with propellers on them so we know they are around.

Anti..HEH!  You're so very right.  I'm just sorry we had such low prices in housing that people were lured here in droves.

My complaint is with locals who keep making those remarks.  As far as out of towners..yeah..this is a rough tough tumble town with no place to eat except Mazies Cafe serving 3 pounds of greasy hash browns along with your 3 egg and greasy bacon breakfast.  Our favorite pasttime is sitting around listening to our arteries harden.

WARNING:  Stay where you are.

(will that scare them away ya think?)

Add on.  I don't think I'd be going to a drunken camp in the middle of the night either.    I keep having visions of Deliverance.

Pike, I'm not trying to cause "waves" but I have a question for ya. Why do guns scare you? I do agree people with booze & guns don't mix AT ALL, yes that includes beer, winecoolers etc. If I am out shooting & someone pops a beer I pack up & leave, if it is someone that came out with me, we are done shooting plain & simple. This is an honest question & I would really like to know the answer. IF the reason is you haven't been around them & the lack of knowledge (for lack of another term) is an issue, please let me know, If you are willing to see what safe gun handling & target shooting is all about, let me know & I'd be more than willing to teach you the proper way to handle a firearm & even take you out to the range, this goes for anyone else on here, if you are interested hit me up & I'll get it set up.

Johnny Carson's comments about Bakersfield sure didn't help our reputation. Know why he hated Bakersfield so much? Early in his career he was doing his stand-up act at Maison Jaussaud's restaurant on S. Union Ave. and they fired him. He took it out on Bakersfield ever since.

Goldilox, I read her blogs and I just think the chicks  coo coo!  But I did find out what wine went with hot dogs

Oregon pinot noir    Me, I prefer  a chilled can of the finest Dr Pepper!      and the people of Bakersfield aren't that bad, they just like to have fun! whats a camping trip if you can't have fun?   I personally don't camp...Scared of bears!  as for Kate  maybe next time she goes camping she should buy some ear plugs or go some where else.

WOW! Our group which consists of several family members and several friends has been camping up in the Sequoias every summer for over twenty years and while we have had encounters with bears from a distance, we have never, ever had any problems with other campers. In fact we have met people from all over the world up at the Rock and we've even invited some of them to our camp site. At night our group likes to play guitars and sing Beatles tunes around the campfire. But no one has ever come to us to complain about our music/noise. It is really too bad that Kate had such a lousy time but I have the feeling her real anger comes from them "insisting that Steve play his guitar for them until four in the morning" although I doubt Steve was being held captive for those four hours, and did'nt that make Steve one of those noisy drunks too?... maybe she felt that it was an infringement on her family time,  that I can totally understand. But to make it a "people from Bakersfield" thing is as ridiculous as you trying to make it sound like you were not part of the party after all you did "go up and chat with them several times" right?

posted by dragoon on Sep 9, 2009 at 08:22 AM

The Bean, playing guitars and singing around a campfire is acceptable and expected, but I think what Kate is talking about is the Bozos who feel compelled to play their car stereos at peak volume so everyone within a mile and half of their campsite can "enjoy" their fantastic taste in "music"! (spoken like Kirk Douglas through clenched teeth). I encountered this same phenomenon many years ago while horse camping. I found a nice  quiet pastoral site next to a running stream. A couple of hours later a group of "people" (a guess on my part because they walked upright and wore clothing) descended on the adjacent campsite. First thing they did was to roll down their car windows and turn up the volume on their car stereo. I thought that the whole point of going camping was to commune with nature and to get away from the annoyances of civilization. I asked them politely to turn it down. They complied for about ten minutes then back to elevated volume. When I began to entertain bloody thoughts I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and loaded up my horse and left for home too agitated to even bother looking for another campsite. Friends who remained behind said their whole weekend was ruined. The Bozos continued to play their music well into the night despite a couple of visits by Rangers and continued to annoy other campers further up and down the stream for the entire weekend.

jimabbot, I believe my first remark praised most gun owners. As far as my "fear of guns"; many, many moons ago I spent part of my impressionable youth getting shot at by very hostile people. I should have said the "sound of gunfire scares me". Thanks for the offer to give me instruction but the U.S. Army already did that.

posted by jmabbott888 on Sep 9, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Well first off let me thank you for serving our country. Your first remark did praise mot owners, but the one about wearing beanie hats with propellers was a bit off imo. Like I said it was just a question & you gave a valid answer. My wife was scared of guns when we first met (probably had something to do with her father commiting suicide with a shotgun) she has gotten over her fears of them since then. My offer still stands, if you ever want to go out & try shooting by all means shoot me an email & I'll et it set up. BTW the pics of my boys shooting on my profile is out at Camp Hamilton just east of Lerdo Prison, the range is run by retired marines & I'm told you have to be ex military or a cop to shoot out there, Also for anyone not military go out & check out their area, the front of it is set up as a memorial to military personel & has trees planted with plaques of those that fought for your country & have since passed away either in combat or naturally.

Okay, dragoon are we talking about your unfortunate experience or Kates'? I had to re-read her story to make sure but... she doesn't  say anything about their loud music, from their cars or otherwise! I guess we have been very fortunate to never (in over twenty years of camping up in those mountains) have had such terrible experiences, but I am pretty sure we would change the location in the following trips if we had. To assume that everyone who wants to enjoy the great outdoors is there for the peace and quiet is only setting yourself up to get disappointed.
