Bakersfield ranked among top "U.S. cities on the rise"

Bakersfield usually is on the butt end of studies and rankings, so Bakosphere was pleasantly surprised with Forbes magazine's list of "U.S. Cities on the rise."

Forbes based its list on the number of newcomers moving into the top 100 metro areas in 2008. The magazine cited the oil industry for the Bakersfield metro area's 6.43% growth rate. Among the Top 10, Colorado Springs was No. 1, followed by Provo, Utah, at No. 2. (For stat keepers playing at home, Fresno wasn't in the top 10).

These kinds of surveys done from simple statistics are always squishy. For example, the magazine didn't say it, but cheap housing among Southland commuters has been a factor behind Bakersfield's recent growth. Does that kind of population growth define a "city on the rise"?

What do you think?

How dated are the numbers because the oil industry is laying people off. Welcome to Kern County! We have one of the nations highest unemployment rates in the US!  Happy Apartment Hunting since we also lead the way in foreclosures! Up and coming? You have to be kidding me! B'akersfield has the capacity to be a great city. Whether it will ever is another story. The politics of 'no' around here suggest that it won't.

Another editor at his desk on the East Coast publishing his "research" about Bakersfield. Amusing.

If he came here, took pictures, interviewed, looked at the community, I would be interested.

Forbes also has a list of the ten worst cities for jobs... and guess what?  Bakersfield is number 10 on that list too:

This thing is more of a commentary on the pitiful state that the rest of the country is in rather than how good Bakersfield's conditions are.

Even with the slowdown in the oil industry, I still see growth overall.
