Our good friends at The Renegade Rip at Bakersfield College have a fun feature story on After Party, a 1980s cover band that dresses the part of "hair bands" from that time (think Poison, Motley Crue). Sounds like a fun band that doesn't take itself too seriously ("We're endorsed by Aqua Net and Rave hairspray"; "the sexiest tribute band on Earth"). The set list is what you'd expect: Guns N Roses, Poison, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Journey, etc. (but no mention of Spinal Tap). In other words, it's just like a Saturday night watching VH1 Classic. You can see 'em live at the BeerFest this Saturday.
As the temperatures rise and camping season draws near, it's time to remind anyone who spends time off the beaten track in the forests: Be extra wary about your surroundings. Case in point: These campers who were chased by armed marijuana growers. Thankfully, Taft police caught two suspects, but two others are on the loose. Most hiking trails and campsites are safe and sane but these days you've got to be smart the deeper you get into the woods or hills, particularly if there's no cell phone connection. Marijuana growers like to stay out of sight, but that doesn't mean they'll take drastic action if you were to stumble onto a plantation in the middle of nowhere.
