Does a "Bakersfield Sound" even exist anymore?
Questions for all you "authorities" or "opinionated music geeks" (like myself): 1) "Is the whole idea of the Bakersfield Sound still relevant today?" "What and where is it?" 2) "Is there such thing as a New Bakersfield Sound, that is not country-music based, and are we allowed to mention non-country bands in the same breath?" I'm not seeing much of the "Bakersfield Sound" as traditionally mentioned in music history books alive in Bakersfield... What about bands like KORN and all other non-country bands who have been working the clubs and bars of Bakersfield for years now? Possibly longer than the "architects" of the "original Bakersfield Sound" & style? Many people will mention the usual places - Trout's, Kern River Belle, and even Buck's Place - but really, is it really still here? What makes the few country bands we have in Bakersfield worthy of being called a "Bakersfield Sound" band? Is it just because they play country music? Thoughts? I still don't know what the heck the Bakersfield Sound is...is it Buck? Merle? or a bunch of people we've never heard of? HELP!!!! 20 comments from 8 users

We've lost our roots, but that doesn't mean we can't find them again. I'm convinced that there are some sleeping giants out there--country artists that are capable of putting out some kick-ass country with ties to the old Bakersfield Sound, but with something new to add to the mix. It's an attitude, really, but it's not the attitude of Korn. It's a rural sound that still exists, but it's gone to sleep. I'm not about to claim that I am that sleeping giant, but I'm sure trying to wake up the sleeping giant in all of us with any country roots in us at all. The giant is not one artist. It is an attitude in the Bakersfield underground music community that needs to be awakened. I've already had a couple of folks step forward and express an interest in my Bakersfield's Next Buck contest, and one is actually a female. They're out there. It's out there. We can't let Nashville trump us. If there are any country, non-conformist, pissed-off artists out there, come forth and be counted, or be forgotten forever! posted by

Oh, one more thing. To qualify, you must feel rejected by the established music community. You must be an underdog and an outcast, and you must be ready to raise hell about it. posted by

Slim the drifter,Big Jed,the Wichita's will rise again, undoubtedly in a new guise,a new form, definitely a new name . As I said on BLT's blog ,art does not exist in a vacuum, or arise fully formed from the future.... but is formed from the past, forged in the times and arises in new and surprising ways.

Go to the Kern County Museum's website and click the exhibits link, then click Bakersfield Sound. I think that will give you a good glimpse into the history of the Bakersfield Sound. posted by

Thanks, jeffnickell. Like I've said before, I'm a lifelong student of the Bakersfield Sound, and I'll take all the tips I can get.

The former leader of the Wichitas is doing children's music now as Mr. Oscat, and last Friday in front of a huge crowd of toddlers and their parents in the children's section of Borders, he dropped "Greetings from Bakersfield" into his set of original kids' songs, introducing that song and sound to a new generation. It was awesome. posted by

Like I said to you in an email, Jason, I wish I could have been there. I tried my best to work it out, but it was one of those evenings when things just didn't come together. Will he, or does he have that song on a CD? As many of you may recall, there's also a children's book about Buck Owens and the Bakersfield Sound. My little girl owns it. Or should I say, "Owens" it? posted by
