I get lots of e-mails from organizations, politicians and activists everyday, but this one really needs some attention. Our fuel situation is getting out of control...LET'S GET ACTIVE!

6/26/08 from my e-mail in box...More potential bad news for Bakersfield....DAMN!

I'm writing to you as the Chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, and this morning we released a report detailing the top 100 regional and top 50 large airports that will lose service because of increasing fuel costs. Many of these airports may lose service all together.

Bakersfield is on the list.

You can view the rankings and have your community take action at www.savemyairport.com.

Skyrocketing fuel prices have created a serious threat to the viability of the U.S. airline industry - and that threat has serious implications for cities of all sizes that rely on air travel for their own economic well-being, as well as local companies that need air service to do business. Studies indicate that at current fuel prices, one or more major airlines could be liquidated later this year, wiping out all their service to hundreds of cities overnight.

Congress and the Administration must take action to address the fuel crisis in the near term, including, eliminating manipulation of commodities markets; strengthening the U.S. dollar against foreign currencies; and incentivizing producers to increase energy supplies, refining capacity and develop new environmentally responsible aviation fuels. Stabilizing the airline industry by tackling the country's fuel crisis must become a national policy priority.

Please link to www.savemyairport.com -- and let's make sure that Bakersfield doesn't lose air service.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Kevin Mitchell

Personally, I am more concerned about finding a job that offers health care coverage than the upper middle class being able to fly to Vegas, SF, or San Diego for a weekend. If people who drive gas hoging SUVs are hurting, so be it. This country's elected officials have been bought by large business' interests a long time ago.

Actually this event could be a blessing in disguise. It has never made much sense for both Bakersfield and Fresno to offer smaller sized airports for cities of their size. The cities where air travel succeeds are the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento.  The population density and business needs don't make Bako and Fresno viable as separate travel entities, particularly in today's gas crunch world. However, if both cities worked together to bring a major southern valley air-arterial midway between Bako and Fresno that airport could succeed. In a perfect world an express rail system to travel between the two cities to provide quick transportation could transform this end of the valley. The current Bakersfield airport could be sold and converted to a business only private airport serving the oil and agriculture kings of commerce. If we don't partner with Fresno the Thomas Building will be an empty mauseleum that only serves as an arbitrary thermometer for the town.

I'm for updating the rail system too.  Amtrak should receive additional governmental funding to make rail travel cheaper.  A huge amount of money is going towards the highway system, which doesn't discourage people from using fossil fuels.
