Newsletter.."Buckinator" Edition!
The rains came down the day Buck Owens passed away.
Once I got the news we thought would never happen, the surreal feeling of it all was confusing. It was newsworthy sure, but I’m a musician too - that’s the side of my life the sadness was felt.
Bakersfield lost one of its favorite sons on March 25, 2006 - the weather adding another component of grief to the sad song of the moment.
Music lovers still mourn his passing every year around this time, and his name continues to conjure up memory after memory like an old high school buddy you run into every five years or so - once the same memories begin to pour out in conversation, it’s like you’ve never been away.
This issue of Bakotopia doesn’t want to remind you the reader of what happened that rainy day. Instead, we’d like you to talk up memories and thoughts about what Bakersfield’s past, present, and future musical legacy is.
Did the “Bakersfield Sound” leave us that rainy day?
Merle’s still around, so don’t even go there! Does that “Sound” stop at country music - what about KORN, Latin, hip-hop, screamo or ska?
It seems everyone has an opinion on the architects of this precious sound, dear to generations of music lovers around the world. But what part of the story is fact or fiction?

Questions for all you "authorities" or "opinionated music geeks" (like myself):
1) "Is the whole idea of the Bakersfield Sound still relevant today?" "What and where is it?"
2) "Is there such thing as a New Bakersfield Sound, that is not country-music based, and are we allowed to mention non-country bands in the same breath?"
I'm not seeing much of the "Bakersfield Sound" as traditionally mentioned in music history books alive in Bakersfield...
What about bands like KORN and all other non-country bands who have been working the clubs and bars of Bakersfield for years now? Possibly longer than the "architects" of the "original Bakersfield Sound" & style?
Many people will mention the usual places - Trout's, Kern River Belle, and even Buck's Place - but really, is it really still here? What makes the few country bands we have in Bakersfield worthy of being called a "Bakersfield Sound" band? Is it just because they play country music?
Thoughts? I still don't know what the heck the Bakersfield Sound is...is it Buck? Merle? or a bunch of people we've never heard of? HELP!!!!

Newsletter...St. Paddy's Rollergirl Day Edition!
When seasons change in Bako, it means only one thing in my world - allergies.
My loud coughing (which I inherited from my dad, who can also wake up a whole house with one sneeze) has probably been driving my co-workers crazy - or grossing them out.
Trying to ease the annoyance, I’ve been taking all the over-the-counter meds (including, but not limited to: Claritin, Sudafed, and Halls.) They seem to work OK, but after a while the drugged up feeling begins to wear, and I begin the transformation into a sort of allergy-stricken werewolf - stay back while I’m under the influence of these potent meds, or I’ll bite your freakin’ head off!
Bako has the air and allergens to knock down even the biggest of beasts, but not the Bakersfield Rollergirls, who grace this week’s cover of Bakotopia. Their story is definitely one of survival of the fittest, as you will find out inside. They’ve come a long way to become contenders in a sport that has been brewing underground for awhile. BRG Dezi Von Dropya even graced the cover of our premiere edition of Bakotopia, and has been a good friend ever since.
Of course, it’s also our St. Paddy’s Day edition, and thanks to our fantabulous intern, Chase, and playboy about town, Tekwiz, aka Popeye, they’ve got some interesting pieces to get you ready to do the town on March 17. If you’re not into putting yourself in a green alcoholic spin, you’ll also find that Bakotopia has some cool non-alcoholic arts, fun, and frolic at every page.
