Oh boy Doc, I have to disagree with you on #1.  Kris Kristofferson's version of Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down has always been, in my opinion a much better version of the song.  Not because he wrote it, but because Johnny Cash's version is so over produced that it takes away the from the song.  Listen to the two, back to back.  (I've had this conversation with so many people since Walk The Line)  Maybe you'll agree, maybe you won't, but it makes for great conversation.

By The Time I get to Phoenix or Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell .

Snowbird is a pretty song, done back in 1969. Anne's "Now and Forever" (You and Me), is my favorite, although it's not old school (1986).

All time best, hands down! (George Jones' "The King is Gone")

(Chords given so's ya kin play it on yer gitfiddle should ya so desire BTW)

(G) Last night I broke the seal on a Jim Beam decanter
That looks like (D) Elvis
I (C) soaked the label (Am) off (D7) a Flintstone Jelly Bean (G) jar
I cleared us off a place on that one little table
that you (D) left us
And (C) pulled me up a (D7) big ole piece of (G) floor

I (C) pulled the head off (Am) Elvis
Filled (C) Fred up to his (Am) pelvis
Yabba Dabba (G) Doo, the (C) King is (G) gone
And (D) so are (G) you

(C) 'Round about 10 we all got to (D7) talking
(C) 'Bout Graceland, Bedrock and (D7) such
(C) The conversation finally turned to (D7) women
(C) But they said they didn't get around too (D7) much
(C) Elvis said, "Find 'em (D7) young"
And Fred said (G) "Old Fashioned girls are (C) fun"
Yabba Dabba (G) Doo, the (C) King is (G) gone
And (D) so are (G) you

(C) Later on it finally (D7) hit me
(C) That you wouldn't be 'a comin' home no (D7) more
(C) 'Cause this time I know you won't (D7) forgive me
(C) Like all of them other times (D7) before
(C) Then I broke Elvis' (D7) nose
Pouring the (G) last drop from his (C) toes
Yabba Dabba (G) Doo, the (C) King is (G) gone
And (D) so are (G) you
(C) Yabba Dabba (G) Doo, the(C) King is (G) gone
And (D) so are (G) you

BTW, good choices Doc and Nancy: {edit, see Nancy, I don't read too good either}.

Love me some Anne Murray (wife & I's wedding song = "Can I have this dance, for the rest of my life.....) and Bob Wills (San Antone, etc.) and of course the man in black. Folsom Prison Blues - "I hear the train a comin' " was what kept me and that old injun in VN from killin' one another - he was playin' it in his hooch the next evening before we hadda go out on patrol)

But when you have a song that encompasses a Flintstone Jelly Jar, a decanter fulla Jim Beam that looks like Elvis, the phrase Yabba Dabba Do, and lines like: "I  pulled the head off  Elvis, Filled  Fred up to his  pelvis.........

I mean come on, it just don't get bettern' 'at...........

I like all of your suggestions.  I'm also a big Kris Kristofferson fan (some people say I sound like him on this song):

I agree that Johnny Cash's version of Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down is a bit over-produced, but his voice, and the haunting quality he brings to the song, is perfect for the song.  I also like Kris Kristofferson's Lord, Help Me Jesus.

Here's a rough cover I did of that one if any of you would like to check it out:

Great cover Doc.  I hope you had the chance to see Kris in concert Saturday at the Fox.  I heard people talking about their disappointment in the simplicity of the event, but it's what I expected and loved about it.  It took me back to days of drive in theaters and bootlegged eight track tapes.  (I've since paid retail for the music I once had to turn over in the middle of a song, so I feel completely justified)  I have to admit I shed a few tears, especially when he sang Jodi and the Kid.

Thanks for the compliments, Chico and dgrealish.  I honestly love everybody's choices here for best country songs.  Actually, my top 10 favorites change quite a bit from day to day.  I know there are lots of great Glen Campbell songs, and there's probably a Ronnie Milsap song or two that belongs in the top ten.

Forever and Ever, Amen and Daydreams about Night Things are a couple great ones I left out.  So is It's Such a Pretty World Today by Wynn Stewart.  though I forget the artist's name who sings it.  It starts with a W and he used to hang out with Buck Owens.  George Jones has a lot of great tunes.  There are so many great ones, that it's hard to actually have a top 10 that I could stick with consistently.
