There is a certain amount of luck involved. Buck Owens would have been a star no matter where he came from; it so happens he was from Bakersfield. You cannot guide or mold someone into being a country music star unless they have the foundation to do so. So far, no one else from Bakersfield has. posted by

What about Carrie Underwood? Wouldn't you agree that she was, to a certain extent, molded into being a country music star? Of course she did, as you've suggested, also have a "foundation to do so." Great comment. Thanks. posted by

What I meant was that you cannot mold someone into being an award-winning singer if they don't have the foundation. I used the term "country music star" because we were talking about Buck Owens. There are versatile singers that can sing just about anything. I'm not one of them. When I sing, dogs howl. posted by

Yes, I agree. Foundation is very important. Also, don't feel bad, I'm sure I've caused a few dogs to howl in my time also. It's not just that I tend to go flat either. I once sang "You Ain't Nothin' but a Houndog" to a female friend, but her dog was in the house and I think he took it personally, because we left to go somewhere, and when we came back, her dog had torn up my guitar case.
