After "I'll Meet U on Merle Haggard Drive," come back and discuss who is better: Merle or Buck?

I wrote this song on Merle Haggard Drive at our Sunday on Merle Haggard Drive gig yesterday morning.  My sax player was right next to me.  I'll debut "I'll Meet you on Merle Haggard Drive,"  right on Merle Haggard Drive this morning (or it's attached here if you can't make the Mornings on Merle Haggard Drive show this morning at 8:30 am.

Then let's gather round for a blog n roll rockin' round table discussion on this BAKERSFIELD SOUNDoff topic of the day:

Who is better, Merle Haggard or Buck Owens?

That's blog n roll.  I provide the tunes, and the topic, and you provide the comments.

Ready?  Set?  BLOG N ROLL!

Merle is better. Much more famous nationwide than Buck. Both had talent; Buck is a Buick to Merle's Cadillac.

I better step in before johnburnssucks brings more of "the fightin' side" of Nancy :)

Could it be that we're comparing apples and oranges?

Great observation Blog.  You just saved Johns bacon.  ;-)

The Hag is better.....come on that's a easy choice.

Merle is real country

Buck had his own sound

Both where good but Merle is cool

Doesn't it depend on the criteria you are using to judge what they have (had) to offer?  Also, isn't it partially a matter of stylistic preference?

Yes two different styles.

If i remember right Buck was one of the first country musicians to use a electric guitar and he had his own unique style. He kicked  country music up a notch.

Now Merle music style is more to my liking. To me he sings to the average working man.

Yeah, his music always gets me in touch with my prairie boy roots.  It keeps me grounded and reminds me that I'm just a redneck with an education.

I disagree that Merle's better.  The only reason he appeals to the working man is because of Working Mans Blues.  Buck was definitely different and made his own sound but you can't say some singer is better than Willie Nelson because he made his own sound.

Besides..this subject is entirely subjective.  :-)

It should come as no surprise that I agree with Nancy.  I'm always agreeing with Nancy.  What's up with that?  I guess it's because she makes lots of sense.

And she smiles a lot too!

The only reason he appeals to the working man is because of Working Mans Blues.

He also appeals to ex-convicts, because of "Mama Tried." I couldn't find any "low-lying-sea-serpents-who-cheat-on-their-w ives-and-drink-and-gamble-away-the rent-money" songs, though.

Nancy, at high noon I was at work, sitting in the break room at lunch watching Carl Edwards beat Jimmie Johnson on TV (Yea!). You're faster on the draw than I am. The one time I tried to fast-draw, I gunned my own self down...

Well John..lucky for you then.  Blog kept holding me back or Id'a been there too.  Humph!

Merle appeals to me and I'm a working man. The song working man blues is cool but any Merle is cool to listen to while working. If I had to guess I would say that guys prefer Merle while more chicks prefer Buck, But what do I know.....
