Bakersfield SoundOff: Was Buck Owens the Fifth Beatle?
That is today's big Bakersfield SoundOFF question. There are a number of names generally tossed around, as candidates that would have foot the bill as "fifth Beatle." The most common one I have seen has been the late Billy Preston. But what about Buck Owens? Certainly, the Beatles were big fans of Buck. He was one of the Beatles most beloved. They had to have every one of his albums, and his music and persona had a marked influence on their music and style in general. They covered his song, Act Naturally, and, eventually, Buck Owens recorded it as a duet with Ringo Starr. But in the world of blog n roll, I only provide the topics, and, in many cases, the tunes. You provide the talk, and, as such, you hold the answers. I just ask the questions. So, on the question of whether or not Buck Owens could, by any stretch of the imagination, qualify as the fifth Beatle, what is the verdict? Is Buck the fifth Beatle? Is Buck Bakersfield's Beatle? Ready? Set? Blog n roll! 3 comments from 3 users

Anything is possible. If Buck was a 5th beatle, is there a possibility he'd never admit it? You're recollection for details is probably better than mine, but didn't Elvis sing background or harmony on another artist's record? As I understand, it was kept secret so Col. Parker wouldn't know about it. I do recall hearing that a black rap artist loaned his talents to polka. I know I'm giving away my age, but I do recall watching Cousin Herb and his Tradin' Post playing coffee-house jazz on a black & white tv for the heck of it. I think it's great that any artist can "strut" by crossing over. I'd love to see Korn play classical with a sympthony orchestra. posted by

Buck Owens, I heard, was the love child of Ringo Starr and Minnie Pearl. It happened in Albuquerque at that truck stop on the intersection of Interstate 40 and the Los Cruses Highway. ;-) posted by

catpaw, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject, and HM, you were successful in adding a little humor to the subject matter. I think Ringo would get a kick out of that. Buck too, if he were alive. LOL.
