Pro-peace songs I learned as a child at a right-wing Bible camp
Believe it or not, I did not learn these campfire songs at a communist rally. I learned Peace Like a River and Down by the Riverside (which fervently and repeatedly proclaims: "...ain't gonna study war no more)," as a child attending an old fashioned, right-wing Bible camp. The hymn books and Bible campfire songbooks of conservative Christians are filled with songs like these---songs that support the notion of peace. Sometimes those of us raised in Bible-believing, conservative households forget that when Jesus was born, the angels declared, "Peace on earth! Good will towards men!" Is it possible to pine for peace while supporting the troops? Is it possible to pray for peace as an ideal---as something to strive for, while supporting the war effort in Iraq? Can we all stand together in pining for peace, no matter what ideological territory we claim as our own? Why can't we all just get a song? I want to know. You tell me.
