M.A.P.P. from Bakersfield to LA: Where psychology, music, the arts and academia meet
Isn't it time academia began to embrace modern music? Isn't it time academia began to embrace the arts? Isn't it time academia moved from obsessive compartmentalization to multi-disciplinary integration? Do you need a "map" connecting you from Bakersfield to LA via the Grapevine? Are you a student who feels just like a number or a statistic? On Tuesday night, March 10. 2009, students in my Behavior Methods of Psychology at Chapman University (the College of the Canyons site in Santa Clarita, California) will participate in The M.A.P.P. (MUSIC- ARTS-PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM)--- a program, designed by yours truly, to seemlessly integrate music, drama, the auditory arts, and principles of psychology into study aids on CD, made available to other students as entertaining study guides for the course. Me, and my group of graduate psychology students will be recording a brand new skit, and a mini soundtrack to that skit at Command Studios, a studio run by members of Odaal, an LA-base alt band. It's the second of a series of M.A.P. projects, the first having been done right here in Bakersfield via National University, involving a group of students in my Assessment Techniques course. It's all just one big experiment. We're having fun. We're learning. If you think fun and learning represent an oxymoron, you've never attended one of my classes. In short, class can be a gas! Will this project meet or surpass all expectations, or will it be a partial or utter disappointment? We'll all have to wait and see. We'll be sure to keep you posted.
Bring Me to Life (Another Statistic)
(from the soundtrack to the skit)
Words an music by Dr BLT copyright 2009
Don’t wanna be
Another statistic
Sitting in a table
In the back
Of some university textbook
Don’t wanna be
Another statistic
Lost in a big ANOVA
Multiplied by a heartache
And a tear
Chorus:
Bring me to life
Bring me to life
Don’t roll the dice
Bring me to life
I’ve been put through
So many procedures
Found to be reliable
Verifiable, valid and
Marked by precision
On a scattergram
For all the world to see
The degree of correlation
The amount of variance
Transformed into
z and t scores
(chorus)
I feel like a number
Numb and cold
Hit by calculating fools
Crunch the numbers
But don’t crush my soul
Crunch the numbers
But don’t take my rock ‘n’ roll
(chorus X3)
