Six U.S. cities have been found guilty of shortening the amber cycles below what is allowed by law on intersections equipped with cameras meant to catch red-light runners. The local governments in question have ignored the safety benefit of increasing the yellow light time and decided to install red-light cameras, shorten the yellow light duration, and collect the profits instead.

The cities in question include Union City, CA, Dallas and Lubbock, TX, Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, Springfield, MO, according to Motorists.org, which collected information from reports from around the country. This isn't the first time traffic cameras have been questioned as to their effectiveness in preventing accidents. In one case, the local government was forced to issue refunds by more than $1 million to motorists who were issued tickets for running red lights.

The report goes on to note these are just instances that have been identified, and there may be more out there, and urges visitors to send in their own findings.

Location: Oilve Drive / Patton Way, Bakersfield, CA 93308

As I came home tonight I found 2 sweet little female puppies. They appear to be shepherd mixes. I would guess they are about 6-8 weeks old and are dark in color. They were found in the Northwest part of town.

Are you kidding me? Why on earth would a beaver doing what beavers naturally do warrant the death penalty? Who made the decision that this creature could not be relocated? Does anyone have an answer?

I am glad to read this story. I hope they can catch the thief and levy an appropriate punishment.

What are the county supervisors thinking?

Oak Street turns to Wible Rd., Coffee Rd. to Gosford Rd., Brundage Ln. to Stockdale Highway, Decatur turns into Olive Dr then turns into Kratzemeyer Rd., or my personal favorite, Haley turns into MLK Jr. Blvd which turns into Cottonwood Road, and now part of 7th Standard will be Merle Haggard Street.

Why not just change the name of the whole road instead of having another road that changes names? I am also disappointed by the decision to change 7th Standard. I think changing Airport Drive is a much better decision. Airport Dr. comes right after Buck Owens Blvd. on 99 which I think helps create a theme. Further 7th Standard road isn't really Oildale, after all I thought honoring Haggard in Oildale was the overall goal.

So I guess now we can travel down Rosa Parks Memorial Freeway until it dead ends. Take Highway 99 north to Buck Owens Blvd. where I can stop for Chicken Fried Steak. Get back on the 99 north at the Richard Alan Maxwell Memorial interchange. Continue on 99 north to Merle Haggard Street and head east to the William Thomas Air Terminal and catch a flight to a city with streets that actually make sense.

I am the curent President of the Kiwanis Club of Kern (Kern Kiwanis). Wesley Crawford Sr. has incorrectly claimed that he is a member of our club. He makes this claim in the Bakersfield Californian and on his "vote for me" website. Wesley Crawford Sr. is NOT a member of the Kern Kiwanis.

The Kiwanis organization serves the children of the world. In Kern County there are 13 Kiwanis clubs (Westchester, Bakersfield, Taft, Shafter, Delano, Tehachapi, Kern, South, Rosedale, Bakersfield, Southwest, Golden Kand Oildale) To my knowledge Mr. Crawford is not a member of any of these clubs. I have been a member of the Kern Club for nearly 3 years. We are the largest club in our division. In that three years we have organized many fundraising events and with the funds raised helped many families and children throughout Kern County. In all of that time I have never personally seen Wesley Crawford Sr. at any Kiwanis event. It is an obscene gesture for Wesley Crawford Sr. to list his "service" with the Kiwanis as a qualification to run for BCSD School Board.

So for the record....Wesley Crawford Sr. is NOT a member of any kind with the Kern Kiwanis and as President I do not appreciate him using the Kiwanis good name to further his political ambitions.
