Harold Hanson cedes control to Lois Henry
As I was setting up my workstation at city council last night, Councilman Harold Hanson walked by. Can you get Lois on the phone? he asked. I need her to tell me how to vote. After he led the council in approving the re-zone for Mustang Square (it's in his ward, so most of the council followed his lead), there was a break, and half the people left in the chambers congregated in the restroom. Hanson repeated his request, and people chuckled — except City Manager Alan Tandy, who laughed uproariously. Personally, I think there's no reason to leave it to Lois. Council meetings are televised live, and all the council members have cell phones. We could all text to members how we think they should vote. Lois doesn't even live in Hanson's ward; she shouldn't get to tell him how to vote. I, on the other hand, could tell Sue Benham how to vote, since I live in her ward. Plus, this would help deal with the televising meetings v. public participation issue that Councilman Weir raised last June. 1 comments from 1 users

Do our elected officials find the current housing and credit crisis funny? With the City Council checking off one plan after another of developments that the city doesn't need, and with no money to connect roads with the sprawl we currently have in place what are these humorists doing? Sharing a joke among themselves as they ad to blight and pollution? What have these city government folks done with the growing vacancy rate throughout the city for both residential and commericial real estate? I have yet to see one plan from one Council Member, or from the City Manager for that matter, that addresses this growing collapse of properties throughout the community. These are the same people who seem to think the only establishments that are necessary for people in Bakersfield are fast food eateries and 501 (c)(3) retail outlets, or another WalMart. Does the Council also joke about our fair city's leading role in STD cases among the major cities in California? Does the Council joke about the continual abysmal education performance by our local kids? Are they still joking about all the money lost on the Bill Thomas road project? These are really funny people, so funny, that some might call them clowns.
