Russell Johnson: Dreaming the impossible dream
When I called Russell Johnson yesterday to ask if he was going to apply for his Planning Commission seat — you know, the one Councilman Ken Weir tried to kick him off last year, sparking an event that should have been known as the PlanningCommissionpocalypse (or maybe PlanningCommmissiongeddon) — I expected him to laugh and then say no. I could envision a scenario in which Murray Tragish chose not to pursue a term, and then Harold Hanson chose to appoint Johnson. But Tragish has reapplied, and while I haven't asked Hanson, I would wager a small amount of money that Hanson will reappoint Tragish. I would also wager a large amount of money that Weir will not appoint Johnson. I e-mailed Weir late last week to ask whether he's soliciting applications, as opposed to just picking someone from the stack of those who apply of their own volition. He didn't directly answer the question, saying only that he's had a couple of inquiries and referred them to the city clerk's office. I take that to mean no, he's not soliciting for a candidate that will more match him than Johnson. I'm trying to come up with a word for Johnson's action that's family-friendly. It's not quite chutzpah, because that implies the previous action was Johnson's. 6 comments from 6 users

Johnson has been an excellent Planning Commissioner. I hope Weir doesn't play politics for once and chooses to reappoint Johnson. posted by

Maybe Councilman Weir can show us a better side of himself if he reappoints Commissioner Johnson? Might persuade voters that he isn't as sneaky as we thought. posted by

Maybe Weir will give us change we can believe in...and re-elect Johnson who was an excellent commissioner who acted admirably while under fire last year. posted by

Maybe Councilman Weir should step down and Johnson should run for his seat in 2010... posted by

I think that Mr. Weir was right on the money having concerns about Mr. Johnson's possible conflicts of interest. Anybody that watched the last Planning Commission meeting that was held concerning "The Canyons" Project could see that Johnson had/has a hidden agenda concerning that particular project. Johnson was almost absurd with his redundant questioning of City staff concerning road impacts. Johnson finally had to capitulate and vote in favor of the project. Although Johnson tried and tried to find fault, he finally had to capitulate. Why is it that none of you question Mr. Johnson's repeated questioning of City staffs ability to figure road and traffic pattern impacts. We all pay City staff to be trained and competent in their fields of expertise. Asking the same question 5 different ways only raises questions about one's ability to grasp simple information. Why are you afraid of another community member having an opportunity to serve as a planner? posted by

Anyone with a modicum of intelligence watching the December 18, 2008 and April 16, 2009 City Planning Commission hearings for The Canyons project can see Mike Maggard living vicariously through Russell Johnson AND Murray Traggish. Come on get real. Johnson and his cohort Traggish are both a disgrace to the Planning Commission. Politics is for the City Council (you know REAL “elected officials”) NOT for City Council appointments to a “judicial body” like the Planning Commission. Johnson came to both public hearings with a Mike Maggard agenda: “STICK IT TO THE CANYONS PROJECT.” In December and April, Johnson argued with the City Traffic Engineer and Project Traffic Engineer; ignored the administrative record, the EIR and traffic impact study regarding
