I worked the Sunday shift this week. When you work weekends at The Californian, just like any other paper, you cover whatever there is to be covered, regardless of your beat. So on Sunday, I wrote three stories, covering the death of a former city councilman, a foiled kidnapping, and a vigil for a man killed in a shootout with police.
Two of those generated feedback, which I'll share with you here:
___
Dear Mr. Geluso,
I am writing to thank you for writing the article: "Father...
City police officers and firefighters were on the city dime Monday when they participated in the grand opening of Famous Dave’s.
Three Bakersfield Police Department officers escorted a hook-and-ladder fire truck that carried Mayor Harvey Hall to the barbecue restaurant on Rosedale Highway, east of Coffee Road.
Four Bakersfield Fire Department firefighters operated the fire truck that flashed its lights as it entered the parking lot.
At the opening of every Famous Dave’s...
Remember that recycling debate from last year? It's back. Sort of.
The question now is whether we, we being metro Bakersfield, should build a new transfer station now, or wait until the state mandates increased diversion.
It's especially interesting in relation to the recycling vote. Zack Scrivner voted against recycling because, he said, he wanted to wait for the mandates. Howard Hanson, on the other hand, seemed to like the idea of a comprehensive solution being pitched by the haulers,...
Errors by URS cost the city $850,000 or so, but the city council opted to settle for less.
What do you think? Is the city being prudent by letting go, or should it pursue the full value of what it says it's owed? Does the council's pragmatism offend your sense of justice?
There’s a story in today’s paper about red-light cameras. I figured I’d take a moment to explain how I got there.
It started back in January, when the Bakersfield City Council was asked to approve a new contract with Redflex, the company that installs, maintains and runs the cameras. Lt. Gary Moore, who heads the traffic division, compiled some before and after stats, which you can see on page 46 of the council packet. Taken as a whole, it shows rear-enders up and...
He's a two-term incumbent, rich, and, as far as I can tell, pretty popular. He loves the job, and doesn't really want to be part of the controversies involving the city council.
Harvey Hall is running for a third term as mayor. We've known that since mid-December.
If you want to take him on, now is your chance. Come on, you never know. Giuliani looked invincible once, right?
Step 1: File. You'll need a petition with 20-30 signatures — not less, and not more — from registered...
(This week, I'm going to start posting the General Information memo, which City Manager Alan Tandy prepares each Friday for the City Council but is distributed to the general public. The attachments are not included, but I'm looking into getting the good ones.)
1. The Joint City/County meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. on Monday,
February 4th and will be held in the Council Chambers.
2. Attached is a copy of the Budget Instructions for FY 2008-09....
