Attached are the two letters, one sent by the Ken Weir recallers, the other sent by Weir. I fact-checked both, but the post was eaten. Rar. So let me just say, the recallers use "detractors" incorrectly, and the idea of this being a "well-planned conspiracy" makes me giggle. I will retype one point, and that's about the comparison of property rights as defended by Weir vs. Westpark. Weir wanted to protect Gordon Downs from having his land taken without compensation; the...

I live and work in Sue Benham's ward, so I didn't get a letter from Ken Weir this weekend. Anybody get one? I'd love to see a copy.

So, how's it going? I asked Will Winn that late yesterday afternoon, and he said he's gotten just a few reports from the weekend's signature-gathering. He was pessimistic, at that point, about getting enough signatures to make it in time for November. Then, apparently, he hit the sidewalks himself and managed to get 15 in an hour and a half, he said in an e-mail sent out to his team this morning. Extrapolating from that, he figures 40-50 volunteers doing a couple of hours each for seven or...

Bakersfield City Councilman Ken Weir responded to my questions about the recall proponents. I didn't ask him about Hillside or Johnson; those have been beaten to death, and will continue to be. Here's his response: James – You have selected four people out of the hundreds of telephone calls and other contacts I’ve had over the past 18 months. I hardly believe that is a fair sample. I make every effort to return calls in a timely manner. Sometimes, the messages are not...

The decision turned out to be easier than expected. With hardly any accidents on record for the crossings between L Street and the Sumner/Miller intersection, the council decided to take the bare minimum approach and preserve the quiet zone. The decision means the city doesn't have to reallocate millions of dollars of resources away from projects like the Sports Village. And it means residents and businesspeople along the zone don't have to fear a return of the horns. Councilwoman Sue...

So Bakersfield has a quiet zone, and we can keep it for not much money at all. Head out there and close a few streets. Put up some barriers. Ruth Gardner said she's do the jackhammering herself. She and her husband Dean suspect the cost would be tens of thousands of dollars. I suspect they're lowballing it; public works projects are always more expensive than civilians would imagine. But still, we're talking hundreds of thousands. It all gets more complicated when you involve humans, and...

The mayor's race came as a surprise to me. I thought Dennis Martinez would have done better, placing second. Of the three challengers, he ran the most serious campaign. But instead, Marc DeLeon, who put the least effort of all the candidates into the campaign, took second. Sure, he got only 12 percent to Harvey Hall's 74 percent, but still, he came in second. Did you vote for Marc DeLeon? Why?
