City Councilwoman Sue Benham has filed to run for a third term. Benham represents Ward 2 of the city, which includes downtown, Westchester, and the California Avenue/Truxtun Avenue area.
Benham is the first person to file to run for city council. Also on the ballot this fall are wards 5 and 6. Incumbents Harold Hanson and Jacquie Sullivan have said they plan to file to run, and Sullivan has a declared opponent, Mark McCallum, who has not yet filed.
...yet.
Sure, they have until Aug. 8 to file, but so far nobody, not even the incumbents, have filed their papers to run for city council this fall.
This is really surprising, actually, given that Jacquie Sullivan has a declared opponent and Sue Benham has a whole neighborhood mad at her. They can come to every meeting to speak but they can't find someone to run?
It'll make for a quiet fall for me, at least.
I just got back from Traffic Central, where the engineers had a printout of my blog entry and all the comments on it. The story is still in progress, but here are some responses:
The light at Truxtun and Empire makes me nuts every morning!
Well, right now, it's out of the synchronization system. Basically, it's broken, and will be until construction is done.
The one that drives me nuts is california and A, I know california is busy but GEEZ! It takes forever to turn at that...
I'm working on setting up a sit-down with the city's traffic engineers in Traffic Central to talk about traffic lights, synchronization and all that. I'm going to hit the big points -- what's synchronized, what's not, why is the traffic data so old, how does synchronization work anyway -- and then ask about a couple of my least favorite intersections:
• 18th and F doesn't have sensors. It's synchronized to make me wait in the evening when nobody's coming the other way. Why?
• At...

As you regular blog readers already knew, the deadline for the Ken Weir recall to make it onto the November ballot has come and gone, leaving the recallers to work toward a March 3 election.
“Mr. Winn and others have not been honest or forthright throughout this entire process so it is no surprise that they would not honor their own June 30th deadline,” Weir said.
Will Winn did not explicitly use the words "pot" or "kettle" in his response today, but he came...

A phalanx of bicyclists Wednesday urged the Bakersfield City Council to preserve a section of the Kern River Bike Path.
A Kern County Superior Court judge last month ruled that the city must install a dirt road along the future Morning Drive alignment. That could mean tearing up the 1.4-mile section of the bike path between Paladino Drive and Alfred Harrell Highway.
"I just can't...
As of close of business Monday, three people had taken out papers to run for city council:
• Incumbent Jacquie Sullivan
• Her challenger, Mark McCallum
• Incumbent Harold Hanson
Incumbent Sue Benham and at least one more challenger are expected to file.
The deadline is Aug. 8.
Bakersfield City Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan got married last weekend to her high-school sweetheart. She just e-mailed me a copy of the invitation, which she wanted to share (and which I think is great) because it juxtaposes her prom picture with a picture of them now.
Three of Bakersfield's city council members are up for re-election or retirement this year, and the process starts Monday.
Prospective candidates can pull papers beginning Monday, and then must collect 20-30 signatures from registered voters in the ward by Aug. 8.
If an incumbent doesn't file by Aug. 8, then the filing period is extended until Aug. 13, although the incumbent can't sneak into that period.
All three incumbents have stated their intention to run again.
Up for re-election...
