Just when I get Fox Soccer Channel fixed, it looks like I'm going to lose my Star Trek reruns — and maybe The Daily Show, too.
But as whiny as I can be about my TV, I wouldn't want to explain to my six-year-old why he can't watch iCarly.
Viacom wants more money — they say 23 cents a month per subscriber — for its channels, including Nickelodeonplex, MTVplex, VH1plex, Spike and Comedy Central (which is currently rerun central).
Now, other big corporations own expensive...
I was visited by three cable techs this morning — a tech named Ryan, a supervisor whose name I forgot, and Michael Scott, technical operations manager for Bright House Cable.
When they arrived, I had no sound or picture on the offending channel. When they left, I had a clear picture and sound with no tiling, skipping or freezing.
The difference, according to Scott, is that they took extra time and looked at all the connections they could get to between the tap and the building. Cables...
Last week, on Christmas Eve, a cable technician came to my house to fix the problem with my cable. She gave me a new splitter and a new piece of wire, but basically said there wasn't anything they could do for me, for two reasons. One is that the cable between the tap — where it leaves Bright House's equipment and goes into my apartment complex's — was bad. She measured the signal-to-noise at the tap and then at my wall, and found a big drop. The second reason, the reason it was a...
I'm working on a story about cable problems, following up on last week's blog post. I'd like to get some specifics from y'all.
So here's what I'd like to hear from you if you have cable problems:
1. What cable setup do you have? Basic (no box, just cable-to-TV), digital (converter box), DVR?
2. What part of town do you live in? Major cross streets would help.
3. What channels are most problematic? Numbers or names.
4. Are the problems minor and intermittent (some tiling, some sound...
UPDATE: So it turns out that 198 acres of the Canyons is under the Williamson Act... sort of. In 1977, the parcel was removed, but the owners never paid the fee to complete the transaction, according to Kaufman. So they've been paying taxes these past 30 years as if it's not under the Act, but they legally cannot develop it until they pay a fee which will amount to 12.5 percent of the property value — roughly $80,000.

Here's something weird.

So it came up again — the issue of a conflict of interest.
This time it was in an e-mail:
also, I cannot believe that the paper, if they want to be honest is not calling for russell johnson to excuse himself from anything related to canyons. you guys have acknowledged his boss, mike maggard, many times as the major opponent to this project, the father of the hillside ordinance and all that. we are laughing out here about what an obvious crooked conflict of interest this...
The Canyons meeting is tonight!
Here’s something to consider: the cactus. I spoke last week with Julie Vance, a biologist at the state Department of Fish and Game.
Vance said the department is still concerned about the endangered Bakersfield cactus.
“We think things are better than they were when they originally proposed it,” she said.
They plan calls to avoid some cactus and transplant others, but she’s still concerned about the impacts of having the canyons...
How's the picture on your digital cable?
Jayme Seeger isn't getting good service, she says, and she asked the city tonight to look into it. She rattled off a bunch of complaints about her digital picture, and said Bright House has offered excuses — bad software in the converter boxes, satellite problems, etc — but no solutions. She said she called the FCC, CPUC and attorney general, and was routed back to Bakersfield, which grants the franchise to Bright House.
Councilman David...
If it's not the most controversial project in Bakersfield today, then it's the second-most.
The Canyons is 1,300 homes behind the bluffs of Alfred Harrell Highway. The ground became intimately familiar to thousands of campers, runners and ATV riders. They got upset when several of the owners decided to buy up some land.
Now, The Canyons saga could be resolved, finally.
What's your take?
