A bankruptcy judge has ruled that Vallejo, Calif., can void its union contracts now that it has declared bankruptcy.
The city and its unions agreed on big raises back during the real-estate bubble, on top of pension increases it had given earlier in the decade.
What does that mean? I'm not sure. Maybe it can only cut down the payscale it's paying its employees. Maybe it can go farther and whack its pension benefits, going back down to 2.5 percent per year instead of 3.

When Asarulislam Syed went to traffic court last week, he was prepared.

When I called Russell Johnson yesterday to ask if he was going to apply for his Planning Commission seat — you know, the one Councilman Ken Weir tried to kick him off last year, sparking an event that should have been known as the PlanningCommissionpocalypse (or maybe PlanningCommmissiongeddon) — I expected him to laugh and then say no.
He did neither.
I could envision a scenario in which Murray Tragish chose not to pursue a term, and then Harold Hanson chose to appoint Johnson....
Robby Pratt won his lawsuit against the city Friday.
Among those taking the stand were John Weber, the firefighter Pratt said harrassed him; Fire Chief Ron Fraze; former city HR Director Carroll Hayden; and several active firefighters.
The questions now are, should Pratt get his job back? Should fire administration be disciplined?
