Emergency Broadcast System Tornado Warning Question...
I have a simple question if anyone knows the answer please let me know. This afternoon I was called by a friend who ask me to find out what I could regarding the Tornado warning that was posted. He was worried about his child who lives over towards the Lancaster area, where the Tornado warning was reported. He was traveling home and had heard the report over the radio and needed more information if possible. I immediatly logged onto my computer and turn on my television. At first I was unable to find anything out for approximently 5 minutes. The first channel to report anything was the Weather Channel. Since my television has the picture within a picture I had it also set to KGET. Finally KGET had it and then the other stations. This afternoons announcement of the possible tornado in the Lancaster area was announced first via the radio then approxiamently 5 minutes later the Weather channel was making the announcement. Approx. 10 minutes after hearing the first warning via the radio the local stations finally started to air the Warnings. (KERO Fox58 KGET) Here is my QUESTION: Why the delay in reporting? Why does the radio stations react faster then the local television stations? I realize it was only about a ten minute delay but ten minutes is ten minutes when you are talking about a Tornado or any other emergency. Does anyone know? 2 comments from 2 users

I can't answer that question but the only warning I saw was on TV and didn't say where it was. All it said was "Kern County." I thought it was odd, since this isn't tornado country and forgot about it. There wasn't anything else on that I saw until the 11 o'clock news saying that there apparently HAD been a tornado in the Rosamond/Lancaster area and that teams had been sent to investigate it.

I asked my hubby this question, he's a former radio guy. He said, Emergercy Broadcast System transmits out of a selected master radio station first, which is KUZZ. Then all the others monitor that station for the EMS tone. For television to get it on the air, it's a little more complicated. Someone has to be in the control room first, and a little more technical stuff has to happen, to get the text to come across the TV screen.
