The above story it a a hoax. Union Cemetery is closed  before 10 pm.</snip>

Dear anny person: Regarding my post at the beginning of this blog. Before you made such a foolish statement maybe you should have called the cemetery office like I just did to see what their hours REALLY are!! As quoted by the receptionist who answered the phone! The office is open 8am to 5pm but there are "NO GATES"  and "You can drive in whenever you like."

So i would say your answer is the real HOAX here my friend!!!

Our experience was in the summer time and well after dark. Pretty easily around 10pm..

Back in the late 70's, early 80's when I was in high school, there were a couple of occasions when my friends and I went to drink and get scared at Union Cemetery... and those couple of times took place after 10pm, gates wide open and my story is TRUE! ... So I wouldn't be so quick to call someone else's blog a HOAX unless you were in the car with them.

I don't think my family ever told any authorities, my Dad was paranoid that they would try to blame something on him.  I don't think anyone lives there anymore, I can see why, that place was definitely a hot spot for ghosts.  I'm sorry, but no physics or logical ideas would explain what my ENTIRE family experienced.  We all had supernatural events occur at different times and nothing could ever explain them.  Coffin shaped blocks underneath the house, ummmm, don't know what to figure out about that and headstones on the lot when we moved there, just strange.  I would like someone to investigate the house and maybe find some answers and find out who that little girl was that was so sad to see us leave.

Seriously, Union Cemetary had a lot of trouble with people partying there after dark.  Who knows how many of them thought it was hilarious to scare other people?  The problem was....there was a good bit of violence going on there for a while.  I don't know about now but there's no way I would go there after dark.  Have you checked out the surrounding neighborhood?

Nancy II..why do you have a problem with us visiting my wifes father after dark? Im not afraid of the surrounding neighborhood, Never have been in all these years. Im sorry if you are. I wouldnt live there or picnic in the park but if we are in the area and she has a sad moment while we are driving near that side of town and she gets the urge to stop to show some respect to her father I certainly wont deny her that small consideration.

She puts up with me honking everytime I pass the Shafter cemetery saying hi to my pop or just turning in anytime of day or night when we go to visit friends in Wasco. (YES sometimes its after 10pm) Hes my father for christs sake..he took care of me for years and I miss him as much as she misses her dad. Ill take him party favors on New years Candy and soda on Halloween (sometimes after midnight because im out and its my birthday!! )

Why does visitation have to have a time limit in your world? Thats kind of sad if you think about it..and I think you have shown throughout this blog who has rocks in their head and its not me!!! It must be tuff to go through life so afraid of the world. Her father died defending you and our country..now you have the gaul to belittle her for her occasional choice of when to visit him. You have no RIGHT to do that!!! What makes you feel you can disrespect  us or anyones choice for visiting a loved one for that matter??

You can all poke fun and try and make up reasons as to why what happened happened but we were there. There were no kids partying playing pranks..we were the only ones in the cemetery and had been for the past 45 minutes. I tried to share something and now you all just angered me with the responses. I dont care what you do with it from here on out. Im done with this thread!!!

Wheres the Blog police??  Ms. NancyII deserve a good hand slapping for your nasty comments and you just lost any respect I had formed for you over the past year or so!!!!

posted by NancyII on Jan 11, 2007 at 06:13 AM

What on earth are you talking about?  I don't care what time YOU visit the cemetary.  I voiced MY opinion.  What you do is up to you.  There has been a lot of violence in that cemetary in the past and it is in an area well known for trouble so it's not a place I would go after dark.

Both my parents are buried there as well as cousins, an aunt, an uncle, and a grandfather.  It's a lovely old cemetary and  I have no problem with it during the day but I prefer to feel safe when I do go there.

I'm not sure why you've chosen to attack me because I stated a fact, or why you think I need my hand slapped because I said it's not a good place to be after dark but that certainly is your right.

(edited)  By the way..No place did I belittle your wifes father or her desire to visit his grave.  Regardless of how heartless you think I am, it is NOT a safe place to be at night.

As for the other folks who contributed here.  I don't know if there are ghosts.  I don't know if there are UFO's.  I've never seen either so I can't say yea or nay.  If people say they've seen one I'm not doubting it since there are many things in this world we don't understand.  But if I make fun of ghost stories try to see it in a light manner.  No one got insulted when they made Ghost Busters ...  Geeeezzzzz.

As for my comment about kids scaring people..that was in jest and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it had happened to someone at some time.  I never said that IS what happened with Sioux

siouxcityranch..I thought about what you said and want to apologize.   My saying "rocks for brains" may have been a little insensitive but it wasn't meant as a personal insult.  It's just a saying I use when I think something is a bad idea.  It was not my intention to insult you personally.

rxgirl, why don't you call the police, or maybe a detective?I don't think they can do anything to you. But they might just ignore you, too.  Or maybe call a local psychic. I am sort of curious myself about this house. I for one believe that you saw what you saw.  Probably someone already picked up those tombstones, though. What amazing things we take for granted when we're young!

I have an interest in the old Chinese Cemetery (as Nancy will vouch for) and I've heard a couple of creepy stories about that place. They still turn up coffins once in awhile. I've driven by a bunch of times and all I know is, there's a bunch of condos built at one corner of the old cemetery and I bet anything THOSE people have stories to tell!

Hauntings in Bakersfield
Hey there folks...I am looking into doing some videos about haunted places in Bakersfield. I have done a little research and found some of the key places....such as BHS, Garces Circle, The Padre Hotel, and the Californian itself.  It seems the downtown area in general is quite a hotspot. :)
What I'm looking for is anyone that has had first hand experience with strange happenings in Bakersfield.  Any first hand accounts, no matter how big or small would be greatly appreciated!
So if you're not camera shy (and even if you are) and would be willing to talk about your experiences, please shoot me an email!
Thanks!

Union Avenue Cemetery...One night we took a drive through to visit my wifes father. Hes in the military section of the cemetery. When we were finished it was after dark around 10pm..we took a slow drive through the maze of roads looking at all the old head stones..

We finally decided to STOP and take a closer look at the Jastro Mosoleum. My wife got out with our older daughter and walked up to the door. She reached down and touched the knob. She felt a buzzy vibrating feeling coming off the handle and jumped back. She told us what she felt and while she was talking she went to touch it again to prove to our daughter she wasnt lying...

Our daughter grabbed her arm to pull her back because she could hear a strange noise coming off the door. All at once the buzzing feeling surged through both of them. Needless to say they had enough and ran back to the car scared to death. We left and havent gone back after dark to visit her father since.

We did check it out during daylight hours a few days later and there is no outside source that could have caused that type of vibration. Not even a small electrical current.

Jastro was a famous man in our area in his day and made alot of contributions to Kern County.. I didnt realize how famous ..other than the park..until the Bakersfield Californian did an article on him one time. I figure if he wants to haunt this end of valley hes got every right to do so..

Well, I have so many at one house I lived in as a child, 2504 Security Ave, on the east side.  My entire family experienced strange happenings until the day we left there in April 1994.  There were glimpses of a young girl seen many times throughout the house, she even looked sad my Uncle had said when he had saw her when we moved out.  My parents said when they moved in, the old woman next door had warned them that many years ago, before the house was built, a woman lived in a small shack on the lot and supposedly tortured and killed animals there.  I saw ghostly cats a few times, my Dad felt "cats" crawling on his bed when nothing was there and there was this smell in the closet that never went away that reeked of cat pee.  At night, I could here the kitchen drawers open and close, my little nephew's crib mobile would move when it wasn't on and there wasn't an open window.  One night, when my dad was out of town and it was just my 2 sisters and my Mom with me, we all stayed in one room that night.  My Mom said she suddenly heard heavy footsteps coming down the hallway towards her room, so she grabbed my Dad's gun and waited by the door. The footsteps stopped at the door and she said she was scared to death someone was going to come in and hurt us.  She said she flung the door open and no one was there.  The scariest part about that house was about a few days before we moved away.  My Dad had built a back porch on the house when we first moved in, so he just felt like tearing in out.  Well, when he did, my puppy ran onto the soft soil and he fell into the ground, it just crumbled.  My Dad and my Uncle got a ladder and stabilized it in the hole and both climbed down to find my dog.  When they got down there, my dad said they had landed in what looked like a large room and the dirt was cut out and inside of each cut out was large rectangular shapes, like coffins, stored into them.  He said there was a few of them, but just seeing them, they grabbed my dog and got out of there.  They stuffed the hole with trash and never looked back at it.  Also, when we first moved into the house, we had found 2 headstones on the lot, but didn't think much of them, so we used them as Halloween decorations. I think they are still out by the street in the grass.

It is physically (as in physics) impossible for ghosts to exist.  There is always a common sense answer to hauntings.
posted by AudreyB on Jan 9, 2007 at 01:21 PM

But Daneboe, since you asked, 7th Standard west of Calloway is supposed to be haunted by a female ghost asking for a lift.  Legend states that she was dumped by her boyfriend on 7th Standard one dark night and was hit by a car.   A near impossible feat since there was NO traffic on 7th Standard  druing the 50's when this allegedly happened.

Someone ought to look into the situation at rxgirl's old house. Didn't her family ever tell the police?  One of my cousins disappeared around 1980  without a trace, and I keep thinking one of these days they're gonna dig him up somewhere in a situation just like this one.

I've had a few wierd "supernatural" experiences in my life, but nothing here in Bakersfield.  I believe that such paranormal events are possible, because we only understand about 1/10 of what the human brain is capable of. I may not believe in E.T., but I do believe that spirits can reach us from elsewhere.

101% of "supernatural" experiences are misunderstood *NATURAL* experiences.  The human brain is very good at constructing familiar trappings for the unfamiliar.

I agree that many experiences do have an explanation....but I also believe that there is a lot out there that can't be explained.  I've heard too many stories and experienced things myself that I can't explain.  I guess it's all up to the individual to decide.
Everyone has their own beliefs and opinions, and that's how it should be!
Thanks for sharing!

Daneboe you might want to check out Bakersfield's Paranormal Society at www.Meetup.com.  You would probably interested in our local "ghost hunters"!

Nothing in Bakersfield, (although I've had my share of weird circumstance up here in Caliente, ) but I had a marvelously inexplicable experience in Civray, France in 1987. I had joined up with an equestrian hunt club from Pittsburgh which was touring the Loire Valley and staying in chateaux along the trek. As I was a "single" traveller, I generally ended up in the smaller and less utilized rooms of the various old castles in which we recuperated from the day's activities. I was particularly pleased when we arrived at Chateau Louis XIV, as I had spent several weeks there when I was an exchange student in high school and remembered its "flavor," and the woman who managed it with great fondness. We arrived late in the evening exhausted from a long ride, and after an informal dinner I went straight to my assigned quarters in the turret of one of the upper floors. The room was small, a garret really, but the bed was large and comfortable, facing a small paned window which looked out over the grounds. I locked the door, climbed into bed, and I fell asleep almost immediately. In the early hours of the morning I was awakened by a large fluffy black cat purring on my chest and staring into my eyes. "Hmmmmm," I thought. "That wasn't in here when I went to bed." Although it was quite heavy, I was not overly concerned because I've had cats all my life and appreciate the extra warmth under the covers on chilly autumn nights such as this one. I was struck, however, by this particular cat's eyes--which were reflecting red from its retinas as it faced me. Nothing sinister, mind you, just an interesting effect of the light coming in from the window at the foot of the bed...as if they were glowing. I went to pet it and remove it from my chest, and it simply vanished...a vivid dream. Hokay, whatever.I went back to sleep, and in the morning as I dressed for the day's hunt, it occurred to me that it would have been very difficult for light to reflect from a cat's eyes if it wasn't facing a light source--which a quick look around the room assured me it wasn't-- and when the chatelaine brought me my morning cafe au lait, I said, "The oddest thing happened to me last night...." Before I could say another word, the old woman looked into my eyes and her face crinkled up into a huge smile. "Ah oui," she said. "Le Chat." Laughing now, she told me that according to house documents and reports from the occasional disconcerted houseguest, Le Chat, a big fluffy black cat with red glowing eyes, had been hanging around the room for a couple hundred years. Make of this what you will; either she knew what I was about to say, or Something had visited me during the night.

I can't imagine why anyone would go visit family in a cemetary after dark anyway.  What would be the point?

I laughed at the one about the old golf course/driving range on Hwy 65.  Those aren't even old buildings..they're just (if I remember right) 3 modular mobiles put in to make up the pro shop, office, and storerooms and they've only been there about 12 years or so.  My son in law was a golf pro there and I spent a good bit of time practicing there.

Didn't help my game a bit.

I remember sitting by my grandpa's grave trying to sort my world out. It was a real pretty spot that lent  itself to thinking. I haven't done it for years but it gave me a connection I must have needed.

I understand sitting by a grave and sorting things out.  My Mom was a wonderful wise woman whose presence is still missed after 30 years but when I used to go sit like that, it was in the daytime.  Anyone going to Union Cemetary at night has rocks for brains anyway..it's not haunted by ghosts but at one time, it was haunted by thugs.

BTW...almost my entire family is buried at Union.

On topic tho- - -

A home that my husband lived in on 20th St. had some very active spirits. It was physically inhabited by a group of male friends, all striking out on their own for the first time. By the time their lease was up with the landlord, it was really up with the other ones present.  It is a strange story, all of which, I can not vouch for.
