dmchenry - > My blog -> And the iPod wins...
And the iPod wins...
Well I made up my mind to go with the iPod for my mp3 player needs. It just seemed like all the reviews and ratings favored the iPod. And even though I don't use a Mac, I figured it had to be pretty compatible with Windows, since most computers aren't Macs.

Here is a link to a great site that helped me make up my mind...

And here is a pic of it. I spent way too much time loading my CDs onto it this weekend. I only got 1,500 songs into it and I've still got about 2/3rds of my CDs left. I also got distracted by some of the free downloads in iTunes.

I think the best part is that you can upload video and DVDs onto the iPod with the right conversions. I have always wanted to be able to listen to the audio from movies during long drives and now I can.

My one complaint? A 60GB iPod really only holds 55GB of stuff. Now I know technically it has a full 60 gigabillion bytes, or whatever. But when it comes to space I can actually use the number is really just 55GB.

And it is disappointing when you plug your new 60GB iPod in for the first time and you've already lost 5GB. That's like 8 percent of the total memory gone before you've loaded a single song.

Still, the thing is pretty sweet. Now I just gotta figure out my car adapter of choice. I think I may go with the one that puts it over the radio so I can use it in any car, rather than just one with a tape player. That's important since I have three cars.

Make up an in-line antenna wire socket and plug a small aftermarket antenna in, between your radio and the wire going to your car antenna. Use a small aftermarket antenna and stick it under the dash. That should make an FM transmitter work fairly well.

That's odd that you lost 5gb. Must be the video software. Like I said, the tunecast2(II) from belkin is good, and I heard about another new one that is supposed to work really well, but the name escapes me. If you get one, test it out and return it if you can't get good reception. It will never sound as good as a radio station, but you shouldn't have too much static. The monster one should be avoided at all costs. The tunecast can broadcast onto just about any FM frequency (I use 99.9 fm) so that makes it more ideal than one that only broadcasts to a few. Like I said try one and exchange it if you don't like it. Best Buy is pretty good about it as long as it's not over 30 days.

Wow, I'm jealous ... you beat me to my own birthday present, which is coming in just three short weeks! I never thought of listening to a movie, but I guess that is totally possible with an iPod. Now I'm even MORE excited to get my own!

Now, I asked for the 30 gig, though. Am I going to be disappointed by the space?

My understanding of hard drives (as opposed to flash memory) is that the 60GB and 30GB is the raw, unformatted space. Basically it has 60 gigabytes of space in total. But when you format the drive for use you have to put all kinds of partitions and stuff that ends up cutting the space significantly.

In a 30GB iPod I would expect to lose about 2-3 GB.

I have a 4 gig ipod nano. I'm not dissapointed at all by the amount of space. Of course I don't need to watch the video of last night's desperate housewives or that horrid show "the soup" on a tiny little screen, but it keeps plenty of music at my fingertip. All that, and I can still play breakout if I get bored.

I have the same thing you have, I love it.  The video part of the ipod is cool, especially when your bored somewhere. Unfortunately a hard drive when formatted is always a lot let than what it says, it has to do with the sections. I just bought a 320GB hard drive, and guess what, when formatted it only comes out to 300. I just wish they would advertise the formatted capacity. I have 4500 songs and still have plenty of space, and thats at high bitrates. It takes quite a bit of songs to fill it, unless you have a lot of movies on there.
