Put leeches to work

PUBLISHED 6/25/08 ----

At last, the perfect deterrent. The City of Bakersfield has struggled to find the best way to keep people from swimming in the ponds and creeks at its flagship park.

Two people, an adult and a child, drowned at The Park at River Walk in 2006. That inspired a round of communitywide hand-wringing: Should the city put up fences, lower the water level, install “keep out” signs? Should there be bodies of water in the park at all? In any park?

Marshall Smith of Bakersfield came up with the perfect solution to the issue last week when he waded across the creek running through the park and emerged on the other side with about 15 small leeches stuck to his feet.

Ewww! Hmmm ...

Maybe the city should consider posting informational signs somewhere in the park, similar to the species descriptions in zoos, that depict leeches. While that may have a negative impact on the appetites of nearby picnickers, it ought to get the message across to would-be swimmers: Hop in and prepare to be grossed out.

Blood-sucking leeches (probably not the type found in that creek, fortunately) have long been known for their medicinal uses in fighting arthritis and encouraging vein development. Maybe they can have safety benefits, too.

I actually suspected the leeches were planted by someone at the City parks department...

If the city decides to put up signs warning of the leeches, they will need signs in English, Spanish, and Punjabi.

Or just a close-up picture of one.

Maybe a sign warning people that in some cases, water can make you become wet, LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,LOL,L OL,LOL,,  SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST SOOOOOOO,,,,, STUPID.

Just like people wanting the City to watch their kids while they're in water, that they're not to be in from the start!

When my kids were small, we had a boat and would hit both of the lakes over near Paso Robles and Isabella, we NEVER took our eyes off the kids when they were close to the water or anywhere else in the park as far as that. If some thing happened, we felt it was our fault.  I can't believe all the butt heads out there suing some one else, for their own damn screw ups.

I once fell at the Lake and broke my rib cage on my own gas can , should I had sued the park over it???

As far as the leeches,,, if you don't like em, stay the hell out , ,, man, talk about a bunch of wussies,,, did the ones complaining just get married.??????????????????????????????????

Spent their Honeymoon on the Kern River between hwy 99 and Chester?

I've long suspected that TBC has posted stories like this one just as fodder for some of the more cynical and sarcastic bloggers, it's entertaining to see just HOW FAR things will go.

Is this the only person at the park who has had a problem with leeches?  Seems a bit peculiar that there are not more complaints, given that so many people seem to be swimming and wading there.

Maybe it's like the old party's we had back in the 60's Bring Your Own Beer =BYOB party.

This could very well be a Bring Your Own Leech = BYOL Party. LOL

I just talked to my sister, and her two boys (4 and 2) wade there weekly. She'll talk to her husband tonight, but she's seen nothing.

A good rumor is sometimes as good as the truth.  Other than Marshall Smith, has anyone actually seen the leeches?  That being said, I heard there were water moccasins in the water at Riverwalk. ;-)

posted by Rickldo on Jun 25, 2008 at 05:07 PM

No, sorry dgrealish, the rumor was snapping turtles, possibly imported from the Mississippi River Delta. They're huge, but these are nocturnal...

posted by Rickldo on Jun 25, 2008 at 05:09 PM

and they're chameleons...

A new water park just opened in The Dale.   There are spray parks around town.  I don't understand why anyone would take their kids to that dirty little lake to swim.  I realize fuel is expensive, but one trip to Wal Mart will net you a kicka** Slip-n-Slide and a summer of fun.

I just remembered, and now I want, a Water- Wiggle...

Some people seem to forget that natural bodies of water are not chlorinated and so they can have all sorts of "eww" inducing things in them.

Congrats pup. I think this is the first comment you have EVER made where you didn't go off about animal issues....

I drive to work by the river walk pond at 3:30am every morning. It is nice to see the aesthetically pleasing water in the way it was intended to be seen.  Absent from the prime time ghetto folks splashing about with dollar store inflatable rafts and water wings who also leave garbage and chitty diapers all over the once beautiful scenery.

hooray for the leaches and if that doesn't work, bring on the piranhas!!

posted by AudreyB on Jun 30, 2008 at 07:26 AM

Even "ghetto folk" have a right to use the pond at Riverwalk.

posted by NancyII on Jun 30, 2008 at 08:39 AM

I was reminded the other day that the Riverwalk park ponds are at the tail end of a two hundred mile river and what did we expect would be at the end?  The other one reminded us that it's a river fed pond and leeches are probably in their natural habitat.

Too bad the swimmers aren't.

Oh..as for a slip and slide.  I bought one at WM for my hunkydunk g'grandson and now he's moving to Vegas with his mommy in August.  Who will use my slip and slide now?  It's still in the box.  I will miss that little guy soooo much.  :-(

Nancy,

It is posted, STAY OUT OF THE WATER. all other aspects of the facility are openly accessible for public use.  If the "Ghetto Folks" disregard the signs restricting access to the water, they get what they deserve.

Funny how Truxtun Lakes are also recharge ponds, yet you rarely see anyone swimming in those. They just designed the RiverWalk ponds poorly. Nice sloping sides, a little creek connecting them... it practically screams "swim in me". (As an aside, any koi pond builder knows sloping sides just invite wading birds... and apparently wading people as well). They should have pulled up the Truxtun plans and scaled them back to the appropriate size for RiverWalk if they wanted to keep people out of the ponds.

Shwaine,

That is an excellent idea. Another deterrent would be to cut off their WIC coupons after their  first infraction.
