A local man is selling tacos tomorrow to benefit the family of a Bakersfield teen battling a severe case of valley fever.

Eugene Alonzo, owner of L.A. Tacos, will be selling his special-recipe tacos from noon to 6 p.m. at Sports Authority at 4821 Ming Ave.

All proceeds will go the family of 17-year-old Jacalynn Hernandez, who has been fighting valley fever for almost two years and has gone from 180 pounds to 96 pounds. She is getting care at UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital.

(Read "Weak, emaciated teen fights devastating case of valley fever" and "Local valley fever patient improving.")

"Her situation hit home because my daughter, who is 9, has valley fever too," Alonzo said.

Alonzo and his family moved to Bakersfield three years ago. He hadn't heard of valley fever until his daughter, who suffered flu-like symptoms and headaches, was diagnosed.

The money will go toward paying the travel costs for Jacalynn's family to visit her and time lost from work. It will also be used to pay for her needs outside of medical expenses.

The tacos cost $2, and refreshments will also be served, Alonzo said.

Information on valley fever will also be passed out.
