Best animated movies
I saw "Cars" for the second time this week. Yes, it really is that good.

Of course, I've come to expect quality when it comes to Pixar's computer-animated films, as most movie fans do.

And maybe it's just me, but it seems animated movies are more popular than ever. Already this year we've seen the release of "Hoodwinked," "Curious George," "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown," "The Wild" and "Over the Hedge," among others.

Due out later this year are "Monster House," "The Ant Bully," "Open Season," "The Barnyard" "Flushed Away" and "Happy Feet" — and that's not a complete list.

With that in mind, here are my picks for the best animated flicks of all time:

1. "An American Tail." The story of a Russian immigrant mouse who gets separated from his family en route to America was both funny and moving. The song "Somewhere Out There" has made me shed a tear a time or two.

2. "The Incredibles." A fond tip of the hat to the superhero cartoons I loved as a kid had a compelling story and edge-of-your-seat action. (Did the Parr family remind anyone else of the Fantastic Four?)

3. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" OK, so this film isn't completely animated, but it's got enough famous cartoon characters to count. In what other film can you see both Disney's Donald Duck and Warner Bros.' Daffy engaged in an all-out piano duel to the death?

4. "Ice Age." Those bits with the squirrel-rat and the acorn are comedy at its simplest and best, and the story of a mammoth, a three-toed sloth and a saber-toothed tiger trying to return a human baby to his father is enjoyable to watch, if not entirely plausible.

5. "Charlotte's Web." A live-action version with a star-studded cast is slated to come out later this year, but it will never replace the lively cartoon version I loved as a kid.

6. "Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don't Come Back)." I had to give a nod to this one since it's the first movie I ever saw in a theater.

7. "Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie." If you can get past the idea of talking vegetables playing key roles, this is a whimsical telling of the Biblical story of the man who ended up in the belly of a whale for three days.

8. "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America." The two bumbling teen-agers of MTV fame had me laughing so hard, I nearly choked on my popcorn.

9. "Shrek." A twist on traditional fairy-tales has an ogre learning to love and be loved, but Eddie Murphy's turn as the motormouthed Donkey shows off the comic talent we rarely get to see anymore.

10. "The Sword in the Stone." This might not rank on anyone's list of classic Disney films, but this tale of young King Arthur enthralled me as a youngster.

What are your picks, Bakersfield?

Hey, what about The Secret of NIMH? Back in that day, it was the bomb. It had some really cool scenes with mysterious rats with glowing eyes ...

Anyone ever see "American Pop"? It was a very cool animated film about a family's love of music through four generations. It was well done and had a great soundtrack!
