Gaylen Young is a valuable asset
Gaylen Young, business reporter and anchor at KGET-TV, Channel 17, is leaving after 23 years.
The company confirmed he was leaving. Gaylen says he was offered different work — more of the hard hitting variety — and higher pay, but he decided to leave because he felt his real niche was covering business. I like hard hitting reporting. I like a reader or a viewer saying in his kitchen chair, "My God, Martha, look at this." But I like Gaylen Young's style of reporting too. Over the years he did stories on too many businesses to name and always provided interesting information. I learned more about my community from Gaylen Young's reports. I've done some of the same stories when I covered real estate, banking and agriculture, and I found Gaylen's reports to be fair and accurate. I enjoyed Galen as an anchor and I will miss him too. I wish him luck in his new endeavor.

Since the passing of Bill Rintoul, Galen has been the best at reporting local oil industry news. He'll be missed.

The communications business is cut throat. I am sure there is WAY more to this story than we will even know. Gaylen was viewed by TV 17 as an old guy, sadly to say. They will parade a bunch of new people in front of the screen but none will compare to him. I hope that he has an offer from 23 or 29 soon. They each would be foolish not to pick him up. LETS ALL BOYCOTT TV 17. Let the ratings speak for the people. posted by

Mr. Young has done a great job to our community. I personally like his on camera persona. I might be "barking up the wrong tree" here, but doesn't Mr. Young have another capacity there, General Manager or something. I seem to remember hearing or seeing something to that effect. Please correct me if I am wrong... and I am sure you will !! LOL Oh.... and isn't he related some how to Lloyd Lindsay and George Lindsay Young.

He was news director at 17 a while back, and no, he's not related to George and Lloyd. Lloyd is George's father, though.

I loved Gaylen's style of reporting. Without him, alot of people will go uninformed about the small business side of our community. His chosing to leave does leave me sad, but there's nothing but respect there as well. He knew that wasn't something he wanted to do, it wasn't in his heart. So instead of just doing what was the newest trend of trash digging, he followed his gut, heart, morals, whatever you'd like to call it, and decided just move on. Gaylen's is already greatly missed at KGET, looking over at his desk just isn't the same. He was full of great stories and even better advice. And had a great sense of humor, a very personable man. I grew up listening to Gaylen, Jim and Robin. The sound of each of their voices are familiar and comforting. I will miss Gaylen's reports and wish him the best wherever he goes! posted by

Gaylen was one of the few real assets at Ch. 17. Jim Scott is the one who needs to go, not Gaylen. Scott's a joke as a reporter and an anchor.

Gaylen Young is a class act and a real asset to the community. He did a good job for the business community and for regular people to learn about the business community and is a kind, decent guy--I worked with him a few times.
Channel 17 has made a mistake in letting him go. Their whole station has been a revolving door. Same with KBAK. posted by

He's a newsman from the "old" school of Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley. He DID NOT inject his own opinion or slant on the news. Nowdays it's all News "light'.
