The Kern County Fair is back
The Kern County Fair, which opens Wednesday for a 12-day stretch, attracts about 400,000 people during that run.

That's a lot. It's because there is a lot going on.

Entertainment, animals, carnival rides and games, food, exhibits and auctions are among the features that draw people in.

Do you plan on going to the fair this year? What do you like best about it?

Ah I miss Bakersfields fair. I went every year for more than 30 years!

I'm there.  Beer, corn dogs, and stomach churning rides.  Woohoo!

Friday is senior day..one of the few perks of the "Golden Years" is free parking and admission that one day.  I'm in.  Hmm...maybe I'd better check the age limit.....

Never been to the Kern County Fair.  How is it for taking younger children?  Fairly safe (no pun intended)?

I haven't been for a few years, but it always seemed safe.  Big crowded area with lots of shiny stuff so kids tend to wander.  But you can take them to see the animals and play some midway games.

I don't know how old your kids might be but, if they are waist high or in a stroller BE VERY CAREFUL of the oblivious idiots walking around who smoke and hold their cigarettes eye level to the kids! My son was burned on the side of his face as we walked through the crowd one year.
It was a terrible experience for sure!

Did it ever leave? Actually this is definitely a  Cultural even, as it is a once a year event  that brings people from the two Dales as well as the Lake Ming and Riverwalk elitist tract to the City's Southeast to see how the other half lives.

You know how to take care of that problem, right? Get your kids some football shoulder pads with some Mad Max (or Raider Nation) spikes on them! That'll make people pay attention to the pint-sized people among them.

Thursday is our day to go.  Everyone else, please stay home!

Thank you Nancy: was wondering when Senior day was?

Beer, food, exhibits, and people watching. I'll be there at least twice, if not three times!

God, it sucks.  Pay to park in a dirt lot, where you are sure to get a ding.  Wander around through sweaty illegal aliens, drunken beer-swilling hillbillies, and every Raider fan who just got out of Lerdo.  Spend 7 bucks for a beer.   Eat the latest crap on a stick.  Put your kids on a rickety ride, operated by some cranked-up toothless carny.  Disneyland is cheaper by the time you add it all up.  Thankfully, most of the people don't have cars that could make it.

My friend and I are going to go on the day of the Keith Anderson concert. Perhaps we'll just go visit our art and photography exhibits on the same day. Other than that, I don't think I'll be out there much this year. This year is the year to take a break for me, I guess. I had been going every year since the fourth grade. My parents finally told me I couldn't do it any more. I'm going to miss it. All I have at the fair this year is my photography, which isn't particularly great.

Don't knock the fair, next to a Costco opening this is the closest thing to culture in Bakersfield, Life as it should be!
