eyeofbakersfield - > Eye of Bakersfield -> Cal State towers project is getting smaller
Cal State towers project is getting smaller
The size of proposed twin high-rise towers near Cal State Bakersfield is being scaled down, developer Carl Cole announced.

And the original idea for a Nordstrom is being replaced with smaller retailers such as Coach and J.Crew, he said.

When first proposed in January, Cole talked about 31-story towers, but now he's looking at 24 stories — still 50 percent taller than Stockdale Towers.

The towers would house 500 condominiums ranging from 700 to more than 3,000 square feet.

Hilton Hotels is interested in its own facility with a convention center at the site just west of Scarlet Oak and Camino Media.

Do you think this is a good idea for southwest Bakersfield?

I hate to be a wet blanket but, are they planning to fly the people to the condo's, conventions and shops because the roads are packed now. If you think you can stuff 1000's MORE cars and trucks onto Stockdale Highway without destroying it even faster and adding further standstill gridlock,  your crazy! I think its a great idea on paper, and in the pocketbook of the developer, but not anyone who is driving in Bakersfield during the constant congestion we have now. Bakersfield traffic used to just be stop and go in the morning and the afternoon, now its a zoo all day.

The roads are deteriorating faster than the City and County can fix them now. The taxes we pay now aren't going to the right road projects, and we didn't fall for the "give us 1/2 per cent more" B.S., so they say now we can't even catch up on the potholes let alone build new roads!

Think about what we have now and don't add more to an already bad situation. The planers should look at Rosedale Highway at Cost-Co and learn from that.

i agree.  i try not to go west of the 99 unless it's early on a saturday morning when most people aren't out yet.  too much traffic and congestion.  if built, developers should be required to fund major road improvement projects for getting into and out of the southwest.  AND parking!  parking at csub already sucks as it is.

I think this project would be better served if it were downtown in the area just east of Chester Avenue, particularly with shops coupled with the condos. But it is the school's call and their property.

Funny comment on the traffic "and we didn't fall for the "give us 1/2 per cent more" B.S." I guess you're one of the enlightened folks here who decided against receiving nearly three quarters of a billion dollars in matching funds for road work projects. Since this county is not designated as a self help county we are on our own here for all road costs now. The state made it clear that Kern County will receive the bare minimum in road improvement money based on the county's track record of stupidity. You won't find any developer money floating around for roads in this area for quite awhile either with the current collapse of the housing market.

It will be interesting to see if the project actually gets done in the current economic climate.

From an aesthetic standpoint, they would stick out like a sore thumb in an area where there is nothing remotely close to their proposed height! Let's hope the trustees have the wisdom and foresight not to allow this absurd pipedream to advance any further than it already has.

Uh oh. They canceled the Nordstroms? Thanks for the warning. Now I'll know to steer clear of my mom for the next month or so. Way to crush her dreams, developers. I would suggest contacting the FBI's Witness Protection Program ASAP Mr. Cole, lest you wake up with a severed maniquin head in your bed real soon.....

ok, now they've changed it from a monolithic 30 stories to only 24 stories. much better; no sticking out like a thumb with only 24 stories.
