Does being a good person get you to heaven?
People who cross my path believe that being a good person will assure you a happy eternity.

Religion isn't so much the criteria as taking care of each other, the earth and the animals.

The idea is that God will reward a good person with a happy afterlife.

Do you believe that will do it for you?

Or do you think you must believe in Christ, God and the Holy Spirit — and exhibit the qualities they espouse — in order to be with them in heaven?

Is the belief enough?

How about the Gods in other religions — Muslims, Hindus, Buddists etc. In the end is there a big happy family in the same place?

Well, the "happy eternity" is the part I don't believe in.
.
PS--the "eternal punishment" isn't credible either.

Whatever happened to being a good person to ensure a happy now?

Interesting question I suppose,  if you're a member of virtually any organized religion,  there's inevitably something in there that says, if you don't belive in me, then you won't make it into heaven/nirvana/shangri la/candyland... etc...  So, I guess the answer would be no.  Being a good person dosen't get you into heaven,  you have to be both a good person, and follow the 1 true correct and right religion. so, millions of people who have never heard of your religion will never make it to heaven, and millions of people who happen to be following the correct religion won't make it in, because they aren't good people..  (examples that come to minde are, televangelists, certain catholic priests, you get the drift..)

That's why I'm more of an agnostic,  I can't live with any religion that says "This is the one and only,  if you don't follow it, you'll go to hell/abyss/a really unpleasant place.."

I  know that there is something responsible for the creation of the universe,  because it exists.  Now whether it is consious or not, and whether it actually cares about us, or just created everthing and moved on to bigger and better projects isn't something I worry about.  I figure that when I die,  I'll get all the answers I need,  either that, or I'll cease to exist, at which point the questions will be moot..

Yes, being a good person does get you into Heaven. I don't believe it, but I want everyone else to.

I believe in a form of reincarnation.  (I don't, however, believe in Karma or any sophisticated system of spiritual advancement from lifetime to lifetime.)

Robb, sending me $100 in cash will guarantee you a space in Heaven when you die.  Trust me, if I'm wrong you'll get double your money back.

.

Hardliner, did you ever hear the theory that reincarnation works *BACKWARDS?*  Ken Lay is a slave on a pre-Civil-War plantation right now...me, I was apparently an exceptionally good boy in about 150 years to be rewarded so handsomely now.

I'll embezzled another $120 right-away for you Random(20% gratuity). Reserve me a space in the 36 hole-a-day division.

Thanks!

Hey, now, I said I'd get you into Heaven.  I never said it would cover green fees too...

Oh, now you're going to lay a bunch of rules and restrictions on me like Allred and Pax. This is what I get for daring to expose my vision of Heaven...

I have to believe in Karma (at least while in a current life ala "My Name Is Earl"), or else I can't find things like this funny. With karma: one tragedy and one comedy. Without karma, two tragedies. Which do you think is better?

Wow.   I'd say the guy in the video is actually suffering from Dogma, which is always getting run over by someone's Karma.
posted by mattloch on Sep 14, 2006 at 11:45 AM
Nope, that was his own karma coming back on him something fierce. It doesn't get much more "instant" than that.....

What part of "being good is it's own rewards" don't  people understand?
In any case, the act of believing in something requires 99% self delusion and 1% out and out stupidity.
I KNOW that there is no heaven, no god, no son, no holy ghost.

Only the beautiful, cosmic wonder of it all

Anonymous-  Was that for me?  easy, easy...... I understand.

Hardliner, I like that, lol.  Are they easy to grow?  I haven't tried growing those.  Right now I have Habaneros, Jalapenos, Aurora (keep losing her flowers), Bolivian Rainbow (keeps losing them too), Black Plumb, something that looks like Medusa, Arrivi Gusano, Red Devil.  Can't wait till I can pick them!

Serrano peppers aren't just easy to grow; they're perennial.

Christians believe the Bible, when it says all of our righteousness is "as filthy rags."  There is no way to make it to heaven on the basis of our own good works.  To make it to heaven on your own, you have to have a spotless record.  If you've broken one law, in the eyes of God, you've broken all of them.  We all fall short of the glory of God, and need a savior to take our sins upon himself and to pay the price for our sins.  The only way to get to heaven is by accepting his free gift of salvation.  There is nothing we can do to earn or deserve it.  But doing good has other profound personal and spiritual rewards and is extremely satisfying.  It allows us to live more harmoniously together and it allows us an avenue by which we may behaviorally demonstrate our gratefulness to God for his free gift of salvation to anyone who will accept it.

I believe Christ covered that whole situation somewhere on a mount.  All the rest is Paul's hijacking of Christ's message--the most successful hijacking in history, it would seem, as it has all but obliterated what Christ really said.

Too bad the author of James didn't write more.
.
Paul did his share of message tailoring, though.  Read I and II Corinthians, and then Galatians, and you may wonder if it's the same Paul.

Pax, sorry to hear your faith is so ill-founded that you need medieval fake relics to prop it up.  If it were proven tomorrow beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Shroud was a fake, that wouldn't prove Christ never existed, would it?
.
By the way, I love how the Russian federal police are the ones cited.  Obviously the Shroud confessed under interrogation.  :)

Two things in this question: Good person and Heaven. How do you define a good person ? What is Heaven ? Can some one please who saw "the" Heaven and came back to this earth explain me ? All Christians are supposed to be bad people, it just a matter of degree. Other religions clearly identify some being bad or mean and some good, some better some super good like Gurus or Swamis in Hindus, or Imams in Muslims? Who is right ? who is wrong ? Every body's goal is going to Heaven or some Nirvana through Christ or killing some infidels. But every one wants to cling to this earth and most of us are afraid of dying. I do not think there is one answer for every one of us.
One thing I do believe what Jesus said : "You shall find the truth and the truth will set you free." I guess he defined freedom as the truth. Only in freedom each one can clear his own cloud and go loving his neighbor.

" Does being a good person get you to heaven?" apparently so, and very nicely. All sins are forgiven if you are the right person, even those who suffer from the Wimbish/ Youngblood syndrome. But what the hell one man's neaven is another man's hell.

If a person needs a reward to be good, they aren't good.

A good person would continue to be good even after being told they would be excluded from heaven.

Why do we die?  Because all have come short of the glory of God.  We inherited death because of Adam's sin.  We are born with a sinful nature.   We can read the Bible but we cannot do what it says.  We will fail.  We cannot produce genuine love and compassion on our own.   We are selfish and greedy from birth, because we are separated from God.  But if we desire to stop sinning, and confess that our sins are wrong, and seek God with all our heart. . .He will be found.  And after we accept Jesus as the Christ, truly, we are adopted into the family of God.  God will send His promised Spirit--which lives inside every believer.  With His Spirit we are able to put to death our sinful nature.  Thus we no longer live, but Christ lives in us.  What other god offers this?   We are then true children of God--we are one with the same Spirit, Jew and Gentile alike.  And we are reconciled to God.  Through Adam all die, and through Christ all live.  Only by Christ can we stand before God holy and blameless in His sight.  We can be perfected through Christ.  We are able to overcome the sins which once enslaved us.  We are free!   Through faith we are justified, not by works.  Anyone can do good deeds that are external.  (Where others can see)  But no man is good, not a single one.  The only good one is God alone.  Yet we shouldn't be discouraged--by believing in the Lord Jesus we can receive a likeness of God.  We will come across many trials in this life, and the sinful nature will war against the Spirit.  If we do not give up we shall reap a harvest, for surely those who persevere will come out refined as gold, is God's arm too short to save them?  Will He not help those who seek Him and love Him?  He is good, one must not doubt His unfailing love.  Those who give in to their sinful pleasures (and do not return) did not really know Him.  For if they did. . . they would not leave Him.   The intimacy God gives you is so beautiful and pure, no seduction the world has to offer will ever come close.  Do not let anyone else teach you.  The Bible is the Word of God, and it is perfect in every sense.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John14:6). It is also written, that there is none who does good, no, not one.  Mankind is spiritually dead and in need of life. God's love for you is so great that Jesus came to save you and to give you spiritual life. Romans tells us that the wages of sin is death. Jesus took all your sins and the sins of the entire world upon Himself at the cross (forgave every one of them, once for all, never to remember them again [Heb 10:17]).  Your sins have been taken away, forgiven by God. Jesus said from the cross, "It is Finished!" (John 19:30). Then, Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day and the same life that raised Him from the dead will also raise all those who believe in Christ and have faith in what Christ did for us through His death, burial and resurrection (Col 2:13-14; Rom 5:10; Rom 6:10).  Jesus tells us in John 16:8-9, there is only one sin left in the world today.  This sin cannot be forgiven because it must be repented of... "the sin, because they do not believe in Me."  Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the Life..." "...I have come to give you life..."  "I am the way, the truth and the Life...." "I am the bread of Life."

My standard of truth comes from God Himself through His Holy Bible.  John 3:18 tells you in no uncertain terms, who will make it to heaven and who will not.  What standard of truth do you use?
