Drinking Liberally
In this conservative community, many Democrats and Liberals are left out of conversations. Often, left-leaning voters are forced to keep quiet because of the discomfort they may feel when expressing their different opinions.

Drinking Liberally offers an alternative to that feeling. Their Web site describes themselves as “an informal, inclusive progressive social group.”

The group provides a place for individuals to talk politics.

Drinking Liberally groups have no meeting agendas nor do they officially endorse political candidates. It’s just a place — the group recommends an inexpensive bar — where people can hang out.

Using the guidelines at drinkingliberally.org, people anywhere can get a Drinking Liberally group started. There is no fee to start or join the group.

It would be interesting to see if Bakersfield embraces this idea.

I belong to the chapter in another city I travel to. Its a great way to network with people you share common ideals and goals with.

As for Bako having a  DL group..I am not holding my breath.

There are enough people on this blog alone to start your own group.  And many more who don't actively post I'd wager.  You folks should give it a try..you might be surprised.

I used to run a yahoo group called "Any Given Tuesday" in Oakland where we'd meet up with random people and have a great time.  I'll bet you could get a Drinking Liberally going in Bako.  Isn't there a coffee version of this run by the KC Democrats?

As a conservative, when I read that liberals want to gather I was reminded of something I once read " Beware of idiots in large numbers"

Good advice, anon.  Why do you think we want to get together?  ;)

Anon, what's worse is that they'll have alcohol in their system (liberal amounts too)!
Tom
, I have a feeling you'll be scared after hearing what some on the FAR left really think. It may not switch you to the other side, but I think it may show you what the far left really believes. (been there, done that)

As if they needed to get rid of anymore brain cells. The problem with liberals isn't so much their views, but their inability to see whats wrong with their views.

Ki6, it depends on which far left you're talking about.  The leftist authoritarians scare me as much as the right-wing authoritarians.  The social far left isn't my cup of tea, but they also aren't going to force me into anything whereas the social right is all about enforcement.  Believe me, I've met all sorts of people.  The only thing I don't like in a group is forced conformity.

Anon, I thought that the problem with liberals was that they were intellectual elitists.  Wouldn't copious amounts of alcohol help?

The only problem with liberals is that they were the first ones to notice that conservatives lost all of their brain cellls when Bush took office.

anon, I didn't think conservatives bothered with things like facts, and you know, books.

There is a Democratic get-together, Tom--and it's at Dagny's.

.

Watch out!  The blogger's brunch is a *TRAP!*

You won't find liberals being left out of the conversation at this blog community.  It is more likely that you will find conservatives in that predicament.  Even moderate conservatives tend to be marginalized here.  Based on Bakersfield.com, one would never know that Bakersfield was a conservative haven and a bastion of right-leaning folks.

C'mon Doc, we never leave you out.  We may gang up on you, but we won't leave you out.  :)

S'OK RF.  You a Firefly fan?

Wash: Inara. Nice to see her again.
Zoë
: So... trap?
Mal
: Trap.
Zoë
: Are we going in?
Mal
: Oh, it ain't but a few hours out.
Wash
: Yeah, but, remember the part where it's a trap?.

Hey now, it's an equal-opportunity trap.  :)  Nancy and Motopoet said they're coming--see?  Room for everybody.  :)

Don't forget, it's not actually at "brunch" time, so don't show up at, like, 10 in the morning looking for folks.  It's 3:30 to 6.

Looking forward to talking SF t.v. with you, Tom.  :)

Me too,  Jason.  Not to totally derail the thread, but did you ever get the problem solved with the outlet in your kitchen?

I think that if there were a Drinking Liberally in Bako, we could also get a nice "Blue Business" community going.  (see what I did there? ;) )
posted by blognroll on Mar 16, 2007 at 02:04 PM
Tom, even when you beat up on me, it's out of "tough love," right?  By the way, Jason, are conservatives allowed? :)
posted by dusty1215 on Mar 16, 2007 at 02:06 PM
Nancy is going..she surely isn't liberal.

Doc, didn't you read my previous comment?  :)  So, we'll see you there?

Tom, I don't quite think Random's line was from Serenity. I was thinking more like this:

So you coming to the trap, Mattloch?  :)

Anonymous,

Clever.

However, because Bakersfield has such a large conservative base, which is the bigger group of idiots?

I think a Drinking Liberally group here in town would work. As a matter of fact, I would bet drinking is common gound for people from all political vantage points.
posted by blognroll on Mar 16, 2007 at 03:21 PM
Well, Jason, that depends on what other traps I happen to fall into that day :).  I do have meetings with Dick Cheney, Condi Rice, Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Falwell earlier that day.  Seriously, I would like to make it, but saying that I'll be there would involve a commitment.   How about this?  I'll try to leave my schedule open to allow for such a possibility.  If I'm not physically there, I will be there in spirit.
posted by mattloch on Mar 16, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Jason, I'm going to do the same as BLT: I'll "keep my schedule open" and see if I don't forget it. A number of things outside my control can come up, so I don't want to make appointments I can't keep.
posted by NancyII on Mar 16, 2007 at 06:59 PM

Ya know..it wouldn't matter to me if I was the only conservative at the gathering, I'd go anyway.  I don't judge my company by their political affiliation because If I like someone I like them.    We don't talk politics at the office for the most part so I don't even know what party my co workers belong to or if they even belong to one.

As hard as it may be for some to believe, politics are only some of the interesting things there are to talk about in this world.  And my world doesn't revolve around that arena.
