Ackstabbing Itches
I had planned on this being a happy blog, and in some ways, it is. However, the inherent callousness of some people has once again reared its ugly mug, and I must change the tone of my writing to match the angry grinding of my teeth. On Monday, I became a mother again. I adopted a three-day-old kitten whose mother had abandoned it. We have a feral cat colony at my office, which lives for the most part in the fenced sump next door. Some of us have been taking turns feeding them; on the sad occasions when we have found one dead, I am the one they count on to take care of that, too. So no one was surprised when I took this little baby in. My boss even understood that it would be necessary to bring the kitty to work with me; as long as I was discreet and it did not interfere with my work, he had no problem. When some of the women in my office found out about the kitten, they went kazoo. Just the thought of a cat in the office, regardless of its size or age, was repulsive to them. They automatically assumed that I was heating cat food in the microwave, which I was not. But instead of talking to me about it, they went whining to one of the other bosses, who promptly called MY boss on the carpeting for allowing me to do such a sickening thing as keeping a baby kitten in the office. It was suggested that I "just leave it out there and let nature take its course", and someone even had the temerity to tell me I should drown it! I had no choice but to put the kitty in her carrier outside, behind our building, and go out there every two hours to feed her. One of these "ackstabbing itches" who complained about my heating cat formula in our microwave heats menudo in that same microwave at least once a week. Just the thought of that stuff makes me nauseous, and it ruins my appetite to watch her eat it. Another one of them actually brought in chitlins! The office reeked for the whole day. But warming kitten formula made of milk, egg yolk, yogurt and corn syrup is repulsive, right? I have had this kitty for five days now, and she is thriving nicely, the "ackstabbing itches" notwithstanding. They can choke on their chitlins, for all I care. I'll just wait until one of them needs my help for something again. Rest assured, my baby and I will just turn our "acks" and walk away. 19 comments from 16 users

Thank you for taking care of the orphan. I'd love to bottle feed kittens again. It's been a while since my last round, but as poorly as I'm sleeping these days I could easily do the round-the-clock thing again :o) Some folks will make up any excuse to try and keep a person from doing something they don't approve of. And few people are as direct as they claim to be, so that shouldn't surprise you. Put kitten pic screensavers on your computer, put kitten photos around your work area, buy beanie baby kittens --- overdose them with kitten-kitsch. Then, blow them off, because in the big scheme of things they have shown themselves as tiny little people unworthy of the energy it takes to resent them. posted by

Good on you, ghostriter! Familiarity must breed contempt, or at least cattiness, in your co-workers. posted by

You are not a mother to this kitten. You are a caretaker until it is old enough, then you will be its slave and plaything. That is why I so detest cats. However, you are truly a great person to take care of an abandoned animal and I applaud you for it. Rain on the other lady and her menudo. posted by

Kudos to Ghost for saving a precious life :o) Some people are just not worth the frustration & anger - let it go and just continue to be your nice self..you're the winner in the long run! BTW, is your work off of Mohawk & Truxtun Ext? I use to go back in that area to reach my doctor (sometimes riding my bike, sometimes walking) and I would always see that people had left food out for the feral cats that live around the area & always thought what sweethearts for doing that. I don't pretend to know the answers to the over-population of cats (only to get them fixed) ... but the wild ones, well it just won't happen. Anyone who can just leave them to fin for themselves is just cruel to me. Of course, I tend to want to always save the underdogs/cats...thank goodness for us tender hearted people :o) posted by

It's always nice to see people willing to do the right thing.
However, I do somewhat see the other side of the coin - is it really appropriate for you to have an animal at your workplace? I visit many businesses a day, and I only see the occasional cat or dog.. and usually it's the owner's pet. What you might not be taking into account are people's allergies (I'm allergic to cats, myself). Either way.... kudos for saving the kitten, but maybe you should find a better home for it? posted by

What you did does show a lot of compassion but I'm wondering what type of office this is.. I'm surprised you have a boss that allowed an animal at work. I'm not being negative here just curious. posted by

i wouldn't want a sick cat in my workplace either. you should've just put the cat in the carrier and set it outside with food and water to begin with, it's a cat, it's supposed to be outside. it's cool that you're helping it to recover but it's not cool to come on here and hate on your co workers cause they don't want a sick cat around them. and having a cat doesn't make you a mother, it makes you a person who has cats. posted by

cassandra: No matter what you do, there is always someone who has a problem with it. No, having cats does not make me a mother...my five children make me a mother. That was a facetious statement, designed to be a joke. And cats are not "supposed" to be outside; that attitude is why there are so many feral colonies, euthanized animals, and so many people who complain that their neighbors' cats run amok in their yards. I have four cats of my own, they are all rescues, they are all altered, and they NEVER go outside. And they are happier for it. The kitten is NOT sick, it is a newborn, not even weighing four ounces. Had I done as you suggest and just left it outside with food and water, I would have yet another poor dead animal to dispose of. It is not cool to tell me I am "hating on" my coworkers because I think these callous attitudes are unconscionable. anglo: I work in an optical office. My boss only did not mind because I have my own office and it is not an animal that is capable of moving around. The carrier she is in resembles a purse. When the kitten is old enough to be fed three times a day, and old enough to move around the room, she will be left at home. That was distinctly understood. wesleysmommy: I agree!!!! ;P posted by

Cassandra, the same can be said about a vast number of women who have had kids, especially in this valley. Just because a woman has a child doesn't mean that she's somebody; in fact, quite often she's nothing less than a nobody with an illegitimate kid. posted by

Ghost, you should call the SPCA to see if they still have feral spay/neuter vouchers to help deal with the colony. If they do, you and some of the less "itchy" workers at the office can go get a stack of them then work on getting the colony fixed. Won't solve your current problem, but will reduce the number of kittens in the future. posted by

The problem you ran into is that by introducing the cat into that environment, you open up the company to many bad things including law suits. In a perfect world, a person as yourself could take that cat into your office area ( for the day ) and watch it until you are able to take it home at the end of the day. Unfortunately in today's times this is not a practice that can be done in an office environment. Once it is brought to the companies attention, they have to react upon it. I don't know what type of company you work for, but as someone who work in safety and risk management, I have to constantly look for anything that could allow a law suit against our company. As sad as it is, anything that anyone could do to file a law suit against a company with "deep pockets", they will do without a second thought. This is what causes the old friendly, family style office to no longer exist. Good luck with the kitten, and keep in mind, what seems harmless to some will cause a company to protect them self due to the actions of people in general.
