ghostriter - > I'm Still Kicking! -> The Ultimate Insult
The Ultimate Insult

The link below leads to an article I just read. It hit me so close to home that I had to bring attention to it. The article concerns Nikki Catsouras, a beautiful eighteen-year-old girl who was killed in an horrific accident in her father's car. The particulars of the crash are in the article. What I am trying to call attention to here, and hopefully to gain support for, is the family's legal and emotional battle to have death-scene photos of their daughter blocked from further Internet publishings. It seems that some of our fine, upstanding CHPs took photos of the gruesome gore at the scene and then forwarded them to their friends and family. The CHP officers were summarily suspended, and one of them resigned. The rest is history. The photos are now a popular Google topic, since so many morons can't resist the lure of blood and guts photography. I, myself, did a search for Nikki's name, only to find that I had to scroll through three pages of search results before I found a true memorial site for Nikki whose headline did not advertise those horrible pictures. (No, I did not look at the photos, in case you asked.) This poor family is confronted by these photos on nearly a daily basis, and this injustice has affected all their lives, exponentially multiplying the pain of losing their daughter and sister.

Anyone who has read my blog knows that I lost my youngest son, Jordan, to an accidental gunshot a few years ago. Due to the nature of Jordan's death, we received accusing phone calls from strangers and acquaintances for a while after the accident. Those were devastating enough. But if I'd been subjected to what the Catsouras family has endured because of the circulation of those photos, I would have gone with Jordan a long time ago. Not only does my heart go out to them, but I feel a kinship with them, and a desire to see an end to this horribly intrusive injustice.

Please, read the article, and pass it on. Even in America, some things should remain sacred. The circulation of death-scene photos dehumanizes everyone involved, and this unconscionable practice must stop.

Ok, let's summarize

Nikki Catsouras, high on cocaine, steals her fathers Porsche, and while hurtling down the Hwy. at speeds in excess of 100 MPH, she loses control, hits another car, and then slams into a toll booth. The only good thing to come of this is that she only killed herself. Maybe seeing the pictures will  serve to make some people  more responsible.

One...she was not "high" on cocaine, she had cocaine the previous day and had residuals in her labs at autopsy. Two...she had a known medical brain condition which caused her to act irrationally and impulsively. And three...did you read the article? However, my post has nothing to do with what Nikki was doing at the time of the crash. Did you see the part where people have been emailing her siblings and parents with these photos attached, taunting them? These pictures are not being used for anything so noble as making people "more responsible". They are being used for sensationalism and cruelty, and those CHPs had no business circulating them to the general public.

Oooh those are pretty gross pictures. With the fact that there is probably no copyright on the photos and someone has taken the time to register a .net domain name, I doubt they can be completely removed.

Oh yeah, there's a great combination, Cocaine and brain disorder. And yes I read many of the articles that Google offered up and several said significant cocaine and unless you can come up with a copy of the Coroners report, I'll stick with significant. And yes I read the part about brain disorder but felt that it was synonymous with cocaine. And if you don't want your name and face in public places don't do stupid stuff.  And further more, anything that is done in the name of the people at the public expense is public information. Live with it.

I understand that pictures for a specific purpose like education (there are some gruesome ones in traffic schools) but what I'll never understand is why anyone would be cruel enough to send them along with hurtful messages.  That's the sickest thing of all.

Ignorant ghouls.

The circulation of these pictures is beyond heinous, and what's even more alarming is how many sick people take pleasure in seeing such tragedy. I saw a clip on 20/20 about this. Watch if you like, it is not graphic. It illustrates the family's struggle to deal with this disgusting phenomenon.

While I don't agree with the posting and forwarding of scene photos.......this certainly seems like the case of an out of control spoiled and endulged 18 year old.  She got busted, again, by her parents for using cocaine, threw a temper tantrum and stole her daddy's keys and ended up killing herself.

Real clear here.....I do NOT agree with the publication of the photos.

ghost:  there are some for whom the word "empathy" has never been uttered, let alone defined.  I believe they are diminished by its absence.  I'm sorry for your own loss and for what you endured in the aftermath.

Ghost~ what can  I say? I am sure our thoughts are very similar.

Empathy and compassion, yes even for such as is expressed here by hard hearts,is the highest quality humankind possesses. You are a shinning star.

Sadly there are some very sick puppies out there. One simply must ask,for what purpose is this?~ what if it was my son/daughter/wife/husband/friend? I have my own mental images to deal with,as do you. To have those exposed to the casual eye is unimaginable. My heart goes out to the family.

Clearly this is not a case of "education".
