ghostriter - > I'm Still Kicking! -> Compounding Stupidity
Compounding Stupidity

I just read something that tends to negate my belief that those who run television networks have brains or education. It seems that professional muckraker Rush Limbaugh will be judging the Miss America pageant. Apparently there is no end to the stupidity of these beauty contests. I can actually picture a bunch of guys sitting around having a few beers, trying to come up with ideas to add scandal to an already exploitative show. Not only will they have a lineup of lovely ladies prancing around, each trying to prove she is more beautiful than everyone else, but they will be accompanied and judged by the most opinionated, self-centered, scandalous jerk in the country. I hope the owners of the pageant are planning on doing away with the speech portions of the pageant; Limbaugh won't let anyone get a word in crosswise, anyway. Let's just hope they don't let him try to sing. If they do, every news program in the US will be featuring the song stylings of Rush Limbaugh as their breaking news the next morning, in which case eating breakfast, for me, will be futile since it will all come right back up again.

If you haven't already done so, boycott these stupid pageants. I did years ago, and I refused to allow my children to watch them, either. If you don't turn it off for the principle of pageant exploitation, do it to save your own ears from loud, lewd Limbaugh.

I have been watching toddlers and tiraras and it just amazing how they look and the monies they pay for all this, of course I channel surf and end up watching a few minutes.

 Hi Ghostriter,

Networks are desperate for revenue because viewership keeps declining. Meanwhile, the audience for beauty pageants is declining faster still. The market demographic for the remaining viewers shows a definite bias for the 2 digit IQ crowd.

Solution?  Give ‘em their hero as a judge!

It’s all about selling advertising. :)

Donmason,

Wow, such a nice, open-minded comment.

At least if Rush berates someone for their opinion and then calls them awful names, he can attribute it to Perez Hilton doing it first.

If I'm on a beach or something, believe it, I'm a girl watcher.

So it may sound strange that beauty pagaents turn me off. Maybe because I feel like I'm looking at a stockyard auction rather than healthy, spontaneous women. With a panel of judges who don't have a background in just what makes the feminine form "beautiful"  or what "talent" is makes the event even more dehumanizing than it already is.

I guess they had to try and do better (read worse) than He-she Hilton, and they did. Don, I see your point. They have to put that hook out there; it's like fishing, I guess.

I feel like I'm looking at a stockyard catpaw, you are exactly right.

Here, I'll just use your own comment from last night,

"It seems anything to taint Obama's Limbaugh's image is being thrown at him, and this is the latest dose."

Why do you call him a muckraker anyway?   And Donmason, good jab!  You are saying that anyone who listens to Rush Limbaugh has a 2 digit IQ, right?  Stooping to the rude insults is, I guess, to be expected from your side of the political spectrum.

And how long has it been since the Miss America pageant was even on a network any body watched.  A beauty pageant that nobody watches anymore gets some c-listing judges is something you care about while a bunch of child molester supporting a-list celebrities give thousands of dollars to Obama obviously because they see him as sharing in their values and you whine that that is picking on him.

I guess it's just "different strokes for different folks" as far as what is and isn't important.

Didn't mean to insult anyone.    I was just parroting the attitudes of advertising executives.

Ad buys for national broadcasts are big bucks, and demographic trends are the Bible of the advertising industry.

Read the trade pubs like AdWeek. Rush was selected for audience draw, because the audience demographics merge with those who watch modern beauty pageants.

It ain't about politics, it's all about profit motive.

Beauty pageants draw a dumbed down audience. If you choose to watch the show, keep track of the advertisers, and the themes used in each Ad.  The desired marketing audience will be obvious.

Business is business.

ghostriter:  I stopped watching those stupid pageants so many years ago I can't even remember who it was that sang "There she is, Miss America!"  I think his name was Don something.

Another reason -- and donmason will appreciate this -- was the eternal, infernal commercials for beauty products.  As I said, it was a long, long time ago I stopped watching those silly things, and I have no intention of watching another one, no matter who they get to judge it.
