The Six-Thousand-Dollar Dog, cont.

For those of you who read the story of my parents' little Maltese, Zhatu, and his exorbitantly-priced hip surgery, I am happy to report that he has come through the surgery with flying fur...uh, colors...and he is doing very well. While the vet bill nearly caused our family to have heart-attacks in unison, Zhatu is much better now and the procedure was a complete success.

Thank you all for your kind concern and advice!

Our dog, Eddie, had surgery for a herniated disc about a month and a half ago. It too was very expensive.
Many people have asked us if we considered just putting the dog down, instead of paying the bill. The thought didn't even cross our minds.
It's amazing how quickly pets become part of your family.

I never thought that my parents should put Zhatu down...I just wanted them to get a second opinion!

I would think a second opinion would be a good idea too. Did they do that ghostriter? Glad the pooch is doing well. I know the feeling with regard to expensive pets. But I never think twice about paying for procedures for them.

No, they never took him anywhere else, they just forked over the six grand. These are people who won't ever buy a new car because they refuse to pay depreciation! Normally they are very money-savvy, but not when it comes to their "baby". I can understand it somewhat, since I forked out twelve hundred bucks when two of my kittycats got sick a while ago. It took me a year to pay that off. Since there is only one vet in Tehachapi and it was an emergency (one of them, the vet said, would have died within an hour had I not found her) I had no choice as to where to take them. But this was elective surgery, not an emergency. Oh well...it's their cash, and their baby. He is doing well, though, which makes mom and dad very happy.

It's hard to understand what drives people..but love will always win out over cash. They love that dog and would do anything for him. My husband and I have the same 'gene'..lol. I can't even tell you what we have laid out in the last 5 years for sick cats or dogs...but its ALOT!
