California Dems: Targeting immigrants will hurt state

The Dems are on the wrong side of this issue.

Republican legislators teamed up to unveil what one deemed a “comprehensive” plan to deal with California’s illegal immigration problem in Sacramento Tuesday, packaging 22 GOP bills their sponsors say provide crucial reforms that will curb the state’s budget crisis.

Local Democrats were critical of the plan, saying targeting the state’s illegal immigrant population would only hurt state revenues. Republicans countered that the price of providing services to illegal immigrants poses a serious cost to California taxpayers and further burdens the state’s $16-billion deficit.

“Both Republicans and Democrats are getting pressure on the budget issue, and there are a lot of programs that have to be cut,” said Assemblyman Jim Silva, who organized the plan and news conference. “What we’re trying to do here is take out the loopholes in the budget process where we’re losing money and make sure it goes to the citizens of California.”

“The state is in a financial life raft that is sinking,” he added. “The California Assembly Republicans have now offered a number of solutions.”

“I think this is all ridiculous,” Orange County Democratic Party chairman Frank Barbaro said. “We have become incredibly addicted to this workforce — I don’t know what California would do without the Latino immigration that we have, whether it’s legal or illegal…we’d be up a creek without a paddle.”

Silva hopes that his bill, which would add “illegal immigration” to the list of situations in which the governor may declare a state of emergency, would provide additional funding for the state’s Border Patrol operations.

A full list of the proposed bills are available at: http://republican.assembly....

Other local Republican lawmakers were also present for the unveiling and expressed hope their bills would get some traction in spite of the Democratic majority. Assemblyman Chuck DeVore had two bills in the package: one that would no longer exempt illegal immigrants from non-resident tuition fees, and another that would bar state contracts with businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

“I think one of the things Mr. Silva wanted to point out was that, for example, New Mexico and Arizona both have Democratic governors, but have been far more diligent [than California] in taking a look at all of their state policies and fine tune them to close loopholes for people not legally in this country,” DeVore said. “Let’s examine all the things we do differently in California and fix it.”

Sabrina Lockhart, a spokeswoman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said her office does not comment on legislation before it reaches the governor’s desk, but said the governor welcomed support in securing California’s borders.

Efforts to reach Assemblyman Van Tran, whose proposal to require the state’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to check the immigration status of its prisoners was included in the Republican’s package, were unsuccessful.

we need a solution and noone has offered any good ones, we are building a wall between mexico and usa

i want to know why aren't we building a wall between canada and usa, or do we believe that no one crosses the border

illegal from the canadian side?

how bout making illigals, illegal!!! I like how some people choose which law they like and what criminals they want to treat like criminals.

Good points about other states that have Dem Governors cracking down on criminals wish we could do more of that here.

msjenny the reason that we don't build a wall on the USA Canada border is that very few people sneak over the northern border compare to the southern border. Over 80% of all illegals illegaly cross on the SOUTHERN BORDER.

Canadians have a culture that is conducive to education and the success that often accompanies it. They don't need to sneak into the U.S.

 Gube-

Lets imagine for a bit that the wall is up.  Do you really think that illegal immigrants will stop trying to get here?  Do you think they are that stupid?  Have you heard of a huge body of water called the Pacific Ocean?  Think Cuba and Florida on a much larger level.

Hey truth their already starting to use the ocean because its getting harder to cross the border. One step at a time..Build the wall and patrol the ocean. We well never stop all of them but that doesn't mean we give up and roll out the red carpet.......

How many trillions of dollars are you willing to spend???  When will it end?  I can see it now..a wall on both borders and our shore lines filled with Coast Guard Ships...wait that won't stop all of them or even half so lets build walls up and down our shores as well.  Who needs a beach when you can go look at a wall?

johnburnssucks, I just love the way you address this issue. “Canadians have a culture that is conducive to education and the success that often accompanies it. They don't need to sneak into the U.S.”   This means the Canadian people have more education than the Southern people of United States… Lovely… Just Lovely… You must have some kind of degree to justify your assessment… I bet you have traveled all over the world, and probably you are fluent in more than three or four languages, other than English. Am I correct?    For sure, you are multicultural to able understand why people from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, etc… are crossing the frontier between United States and Mexico.   I feel so much better to have someone, here, in Oildale, I mean Kern County with such qualification and knowledge.   Thank you, and keep the good work of keeping the [edit.] out of Kern County.

Dang johnsburnsucks shame on you for stating your opinion.

I am not saying I have all the solutions.   I don't get paid to solve this country's problems.  I vote for my representative and hope they do what they are paid to do.  What I am getting at is if this wall is not going to even come close to stopping illegal immigration than why waste the money.  I guess I don't understand what your major problem is with illegal immigrants other than they didn't fill out the necessary forms to come here.  Did your family have a passport or documents when they came to this country?  I am guessing no.  Most people who come here are hard working people that are only trying to make a better life for their family, just like yours and mine back in the day.  Their goal is not to sell drugs or take your job.  How in Tehachapi has your life been affected by illegals?  Do you have a job?  If not why?  Do you pay for health insurance?  Not to nick pick but I am curious how much money are you willing to spend on this?

truth see I do believe that a wall will make a difference. It may not keep them all out but it will keep out alot more then an open border will. I don't know what type of work you do but obviously you don't have to worry about an illegal taking your job. See I'm not so fortunate.....I work construction....Went to apprenticeships school for 5 years. At the time I chose sheet metal I never dreamed that I would have to compete against a person that doesn't belong here and is willing to work for peanuts. I am married and I have 6 kids...........Between the house payment and my age its a little late for me to go back to school to learn another job. Now don't tell me if I was any good at what i do then I wouldn't have to worry.............I am union so i don't have to worry about an illegal taking my job at my company but I do have to worry about my company not getting any work because of the company's that can out bid my company because of the wage difference. Illegals are not just taking the jobs that Americans don't want,Thats a bunch of BS. They are........

edit.......Yes I pay for my own Health Ins.

truth $200 Billion Dollars a year in suppressed American wages are caused by the illegal aliens. http://transcripts.cnn.com/...

Securing our borders is like locking our doors at night ...........it only makes sense.

No, they aren't, nocouch.  You should learn to read more closely.

.

For bonus money, how much have American wages been suppressed by eight years of failed economic policies out of the Bush Administration, offshoring of jobs by American corporations, etc?  That would be *REAL* money.
