gube is having gastric bypass next tuesday

I am having Gastric Bypass next Tuesday. I am so excited.... I have been trying to get this surgery for 2 years and bam I just found out that next Tuesday is the day. I have done a lot of research on this procedure and I think I know what I'm in for.......I was just wondering if anyone in blogland has had this surgery. I would like to know if any of you have any suggestions as to help me in my recovery..............I have done a lot of reading but sometimes the best advice comes from some one that has walked this path..

thanks........gube

Gube, good luck and I wish you the best.  Sorry, I don't have any personal experience, although I'd like to get the lap band myself.  I again wish you all the luck and since you'll have some downtime, I look forward to more illegal posts :)

We've had several patients go through with this procedure and none of them regret it.  You have the occasional patient who didn't follow the rules and wonder why it didn't work for them.

Good luck to you Gube...follow your doctor's orders and be sure and get your vitamin and nutritional supplements.  We will be thinking of you and hoping for a quick recovery for you.

You will experience two weeks of absolute Hell. After that, it gets easier. You will lose muscle at an alarming rate. You'll build it back. You'll throw up a lot. You'll learn not to. You'll have trouble even drinking water. You'll get your thirst back. Your back may begin to hurt from the "changing topography." You'll strengthen your back again.

Eventually your clothes won't fit. You'll buy more clothes.

I actually still wear my old belt from 150 pounds ago. I just added new holes. It reminds me what I've been thru and what I need to keep in mind. A year and a half later, I can finally eat a whole sandwich. Still can't drink while I eat though.

Good luck. Your life, and the life of your family, is about to make a dramatic change.

No personal experience here with gastric bypass, but definitely hugs and congratulations!  Take care, Gube.

Good luck Gube. Who is doing the surgery if I may be so bold?

Good luck, Gube.  I assume you're talking about true bypass rather than a lap-band sort of thing?

Good Luck!

Get Well Soon! I have an aunt that had the surgery and she looks amazing!

Gube, when I met you a couple of years back you didn't look like a guy who would need gastric bypass surgery. I remember thinking you were a fairly substantial individual but not so heavy that a drastic procedure was in the cards. I hope it goes well. I know that weight on the back over a period of time takes its toll, but you might seriously consider trying to keep your portions smaller on your own than having a knot make the decision for you. From everything I have read on the subject your life will never be the same. Good luck!

Good luck Gube.  I know quite a few people who have had the bypass, one very close to home,  and all I can say is FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.  One I know didn't and she had major health issues after that.  Do what they tell you and you'll be buying a new set of clothes before you know it.  A co worker told me it was the best thing she ever did but she can't eat chocolate now except in tiny nibbles.  If you're a chocoholic you might have issues.  (kidding.)

Keep us posted.  I'm rooting for you.

I have a feeling he tried that. Gastric bypass is a lot more than just portion control. It also affects calorie and fat absorption.

Echoing what everyone else has said, follow the post-op instructions to the letter.

Good luck and take care, Gube.

Good health and bright blessings to you, my friend. And, wit and Nancy are right; do what you're told by the docs, and you will have great success. It would be really cool if you would consider posting before/after pics. I always wondered if you looked anything like your avatar, anyway...! ;)

Take care.

Wow, Gube, that's a big step. I wish you the best of luck, and we're all looking forward to your detailed account of the whole thing! Well, not too detailed :-)

Gube, gastric bypass before Thanksgiving?  Please don't give in to any temptation to grab a huge turkey leg and devour it.  Remember, baby steps.

Take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.

Thanks everyone for your support and comments. This is a life changing operation and I am ready for it. I know that it is not a fix all but a tool for me to use.. The best advice that I have received is to follow the Doctors instructions with I fully intend to do......Pacific Bariatric in San Diego is doing the surgery at scripps hospital........

Adampayne... I have tried portion control and many other diets but I have a difficult time keeping the weight off....It seems like every time I loose weight I gain it all back plus 20 pounds...I am now 42 and I weigh 335.....I am afraid that if I don't take this weight off I wont be around to see my grand kids......And I want to enjoy life again....Thank you for your comment.

witbee.......... thanks for your comment....I understand that the first two week will be the hardest....I am sure that know matter how much I tell myself that I am ready for it I will probably hate the first two weeks or so. I do have a great attitude and I believe that that will help me in my recovery.
I'll keep you all informed as to my recovery...

Thanks again ....gube

Don't forget to stock up on Gas-x. Try the new melt-away strips.

Best wishes and start planning a bright future!  :)

Gube

I'm happy for you but I'm confused.  I've met you a couple of times and didn't think you looked like a candidate for gastric bypass.    You sure carry your weight well.

Anyway, the BEST OF LUCK TO YOU.

Thank you Audrey.....Most people are surprised when I tell them I weigh over 350 pounds......To qualify for the surgery I had to be at least 1 hundred pounds over weight with a BMI of at least 40.....I am over 150 pounds over weight and my BMI is at 48.6........I also have some health issues that my weight is effecting............I really feel that this surgery is necessary.

gube:  many wishes for successful surgery and uneventful, restful recuperation.  How long will you be hospitalized? My congratulations to you for taking this step.
