South High rising again
I posted this on my personal blog, but wanted to make sure to get it on here too.

*****

I write this in total fear of the storm it's about to start in blog comment land. But I'm going to write it anyway.

A few of us on the sports staff had the distinct pleasure of going over to South High for their scrimmage the other night. That's right, I said pleasure and South High in the same line!

This just in: Things are looking up at South, and not just on the actual football field.

There was a certain feeling in the air as we watched the team scrimmage. The buzz on the sidelines was kind of fun to be around. It certainly didn't feel like a team that won just two games the year before.

I think there are a lot of people that are pushing for positive change over there, so I won't begin to go into the names because I'd surely leave someone off.

But as we munched on some of the best barbecue I've ever had, you could see that people are really starting to care about the whole product of a student-athlete at South.

If you haven't been over to South lately, I'd encourage you to go check things out. Spend a few minutes in awe of the new weight room. Spend some time listening to the coaching staff laugh and joke about old times as Rebels. Spend some time munching on some great catered food (from a South High alum no less). Spend some time listening to some of the players talk ... they sure don't sound like kids that believe they are going to go 2-8 this year.

Oh sure, we can go on and on about how things have been in the past. We could also debate that this year may end up being a tough year again on the football field. But even if that does happen, you can see things heading in the right direction.

No, South doesn't have the resources that some of the other schools might have. But I once heard a bit of advice that seems to be the theme for the Rebels this year:

Never let a lack of resources get in the way of a good idea.

South high coaches and players have a good idea, and they are making the most of what they have. And that's something I was happy to see.

John is a good guy with all the good intentions, but I am afraid that in this league he will again be overmatched.  He may improve in the next year or but to say that they will be a factor this year is totally disengenious.
As for fan and alumni support they try, but you will not find those hundred dollar plates that you find at other schools. There are some famous and infamous alumni but most like your newspaper's Herb Benham and hate radio's Inga Barks would not give them the time of day.

I think this year South will be a much better team.  They might be outmatched in league play, but with South moving down to Division 3 and teams like Arvin, Kerman, McClane, exc that are in Division 3, South might be able to win 1 or 2 playoff games.

Play off games be serious, why should a team that cannot win one game it its own league go to ANY playoff, thart would be an embarassment.

What they do not need is a FREE lunch!

South will win a league game.  They will beat North.  Another thing, the TRAC sent all of its teams to the playoffs last year including Central who didn't win a playoff game.  And another thing, you should research to see how weak Division 3 is.  South should easily win at least 1 playoff game.

Yeah and elephants fly! If they cannot win in their league, the post season should be OUT, put away the pencil cup and do some real work to get into post season and that goes for all teams.

Ok so by your logic a team like Central of Fresno who plays in what is arguably the toughest league in the state, shouldn't be allowed into the playoffs.  I guess that goes for Buchanan who also plays in the same league as Central, and went 0-5 in league play that year.  Buchanan ended up beating Redwood in the first round of the playoffs.  I'm sure that 0-5 record in league play didn't mean much to Buchanan when it was all said and done.  Put aside the league records (and the overall records for that matter, as Tulare Union and Stockdale have proven that a 10-0 record doesn't mean crap in the playoffs) and lets look at things such as quality wins, strength of schedule, exc.  Then you find out which team really deserves to play in the playoffs or which team deserves the #1 seed, or which team is better than the other.

The battle of losers is just that, the battle of losers no matter how nicely you decorate it. As for Central fFresno stinks during the season it stinks after the season, and that and feel good perfume will not change that.

In that case anyone who follows High School Football can make the post season schedule available in July, they are all winners!

You have to teach this kid discipline and tackling , and blocking before you teach them dancing, that start at South was as stupidid an exhibition energy waste before the game that I have ever seen.

What next a hat dance, get a clue, work on your special teams and tackling and leave the dancing to TO and the cowboys. Real athletes don't need  show antics, quiet professional confidence is best at any step of develpement.

south high? why? go check out a garces football game. With top notch players like tommy barron, the next reggie bush, and xavier tavorn the excitement never stops, watch them this coming friday when they dismantle the dreaded drillers, as they did highland 49-0. it should be the game of the year for bakersfield high school football. i heard that the south high football team will cancel their next coming game so that can see garces vs bhs, a real football game.

Why would anyone with any sense want to watch these richy rich cclowns who get paid on par with the NFL? BHS wi;; not have to worry just knock that silver sppon out of their mouths and they are helpless.  But than the Pope is on their side and you know what a mouth this guy has, come to thin about he probably wrote the previous blog.

I love comment such as those of KRZYGUS11, who basically love to see the top dogs with the best players money can buy beat up on one of the KHSD neglected schools, 49 to 0 what an accomplishment, but I guess that goes well with the Catholic version of  the golden rule" do unto others and if they are weak, do it again" give these guys the silver chalice, yeah they are learning that is it better to give, preferably in the mouth than it is to receive, what idiots to pay money to teach kids all that crap, when they can get it for free, just by listening to their parents and booster.

HEY ANONYMOUS CRYBABY,  CHILL OUT!!!, THESE PLAYERS AREN'T PAID FOR, AND THE KHSD SCHOOLS AREN'T NEGLECTED EITHER, THEY ALL HAVE AS MUCH A CHANCE AS ANYBODY TO GET A GOOD  EDUCATION IF THEIR PARENTS WOULD GET OFF THEIR REARS AND PROVIDE. SOUNDS TO ME THAT (ANONYMOUS) IS BITTER FROM A TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD. MAYBE YOU JUST NEED A HUG. ITS OK, AS A CATHOLIC WE FORGIVE YOU.

Oh you mean you stopped paying them? I'm a Catholic too sweetheart, but not a stupid clone.

You suffer from a cloistered sports existance , church talk for you are stupid, but if you want to crow about how great halimary high is for stumping an a school that has not had a win and it not likely to get one, it is not unexpected.

You holy roller superheroes are as corrupt as they come according to your former 7ft  star,  BHS at least met the contract price but what the hell, you will keep the next one.  Cathoilc schools around the counry are notorius for endowing superior athletes, in fact just last week I met one whose bro goes to public school, his is not as talented as his brother, but oh well, not everyone is blessed, right?

Geez you Christians are so angry when outed, now is that Jesus approved, I know the Pope does not approve, he is out hunting Muslims these days.

THIS CHICK TALKS ABOUT BEING STUPID? HEY... MISS NO IT ALL, CHECK OUT SPELL CHECK!  I DONT SUFFER FROM ANYTHING, JUST LISTENING TO YOUR IGNORANCE AS YOU TRY TO EXPLAIN YOUR WORLD.  THIS ISNT A RELIGIOUS BATTLE. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR ONE, OPEN YOUR DOOR TO THE NEXT JEHOVA WITNESS THAT KNOCKS.  MAYBE YOU AND THE JEHOVAH'S CAN FIND SOMETHING IN COMMON. TRUST ME LADY THE MORE YOU GO ON AN ON WHINNING YOUL NEVER GET LAID.

Why must the blog always decompensate into some other entirely unrelated - and typically political or religious - subject that already exists in 1200 other blog sites, and already repeats all the same talking points?

The kids at South High School - and the fans for that matter - have a remarkable loyalty to that school and love for th egame.  (Did Brandon go back for the sold out homecoming?) But their program has a long, long way to go.  Keep your eye on key JV players coming up the next year or two.  Brandon could be vindicated by 08-09 when Terrell Moya and their other 6'4" 200+ JV players have had time to grow and mature.

Go Rebels!

What ever you are smoking, I must have some.  The JV only won one game with these stars and now they have been moved up to absorb some of that losing culture. Big yes, soft, yes, fast no!

hey those jv players were on a freshman team that went undefeated in league last year, and took the swyl championship and beat all your little rich kids.....
