jasonsperber - > Blogging Bako -> Help us help our community's homeless
Help us help our community's homeless

recent thread about the ever-popular "War on Christmas" included some remarks that served as a reminder, however tongue-in-cheek, that one might better celebrate the spirit of the season through philanthropy and charity than by continuing to beat the dead horses of secularism and commercialism.  In response, I posted this link to a post on Bakotopia in which the blogger, inspired by a personal encounter, is asking community members to help her collect supplies for our local homeless people.

I also mentioned that my own department here at the Californian, Interactive Media, is in the middle of a drive to make and distribute personal hygiene kits to the homeless in our community.  Several of you have already asked me how you can help, and so I'm posting our flyer and explanatory letter here.  We've already gotten great response, but we need help to reach our goal of 1,000 kits by Dec. 15.  Monetary donations (cash, money order, or checks made out to The Bakersfield Californian) toward supplies are most welcome, as are donations of actual kit supplies.  We are most in need of deodorant, toothpaste, and facecloths at the moment.

The flyer and letter have all the info you need (click the icons to download), but in short, you can mail donations or drop them off in the Californian's lobby at 1707 Eye St., 93301 (mail you can send to the attention of Angela Brown, Interactive Media).  And if you do drop by, feel free to ask the front desk to call me and I'll come up to say hi.

Thanks again for your help, support, and interest.  This is what makes this online community special.

Once you've made your donation, you've automatically become eligible for my Donate 2 Download program.  That means that once you've donated to the homeless through the information offered here, or through a charitable organization of your choice, you are entitled to download the song, Homeless 4 the Holidays for free.  The program is based on the honor system, which means I trust you.  The links over at my new blog post.  Hope to see you there!

Hi,

I am glad to see this outreach to community Bakersfield.  My daughter, Alicia Marie Carter, is out there somewhere on your streets.  She called on Sunday, through someone's generosity and kindness, but our calls were very short, and when we finally had a solution to getting her help, she apparently was not able to call back.

On Monday I learned that Alicia tried to get into Friese Women's Recovery (& Rehab) Home, but was turned away (yes, she has both drug and alcohol problems).  She  was very sick, so she went to Mercy Hospital (I learned this when I called around to see if I could find my daughter).  Mercy fed her and tried to get her placed in Friese, but Friese doesn't work with California Social Services (unsure if correct statement/agency).  My daughter left the hospital against medical advice.

She hasn't been heard from since.  If she arrives at any of your homeless shelters, PLEASE have her call me here in Texas, or send me an email message, or call her grandma & grandpa in Silver City, New Mexico.

Alicia Marie is 30 years old, about 5' 6", weighs about 95-115 lbs. (last my sister saw her), has very short brown hair, brown, almond-shaped eyes -- tatoo on her lower back.  When on the phone with her on Sunday, she said she only had one bag of belongings with her.  She had discarded the rest because it was too much to drag around -- so, I don't believe she even has any ID.

Since she is reaching out for the right kind of help, I definitely want to help her.  Thank you for any help you can provide.  Blessings, Alicia D. -- her mom

swakdouglas, that is heartbreaking.  Have you talked  to the Bakersfield P.D.  and the Kern County Sheriffs Dept.?  Give them nicknames, drug preference, boyfriends names, anything they want and do not give up.

That is really sad. I hope you find her.
