Tonight: An Outage. Tomorrow: A Make-Over.
From 12 midnight tonight until about 5 a.m. PST tomorrow morning, Thursday, February 1st, blogs, profiles and all other People-related content will be inaccessible due to a server upgrade. When the site goes back up, however, you'll find a few new surprises. First, the People page, your homebase for navigating Bakersfield.com's blogosphere, has been redesigned with both form and function in mind. Second, under the tab "All Blogs," you'll find an index of all blogs on the site in alphabetical order by blog title. Finally, when you click on "post something new" to publish your latest blog post, you'll notice something different. You'll have the option to write a blog post, an event listing, or an article. Basically, this will streamline the editing and publication process of our citizen journalism program, "Your Words." Unlike on the blogs, article submissions will enter a queue to be edited and chosen for publication on the Californian's website, in the print edition of the newspaper, or both. This new way of submitting user-generated content is just another step in the growth of citizen journalism at The Bakersfield Californian. As always, we invite your feedback on these changes. See you on the other side! 34 comments from 15 users

Considering that it's hard to screw up a jobs section in a town that has no jobs.

Termite, it shouldn't be more complicated. When you click "post something," you'll then click on the "blog" icon to go the the familiar blog post composition page. As for finding blogs, posts, and comments, the redesigned People page will still have a "new comments" box and a "new posts" box, as well as the familiar "new comments" and "new posts" pages, on which the most recent stuff is on top. An alphabetical index is merely another way to find content. It's not replacing anything. I can find "The Termite Blog" under T, "Makes Things Go" under M, and "Life" under L, in addition to being able to find your stuff by seeing your profile picture under "recent visitors" and finding your blog that way, or by seeing that you've just posted something and it's coming up under "new posts." That's all. It's not like businesses naming themselves AAA-1 in order to be in the front of the yellow pages, it's just another way to list and find your blogs. Re: Kern County Jobs, we are sincerely trying to provide the best information and user experience we can. That said, any new product is going to have issues, and if you have specific complaints, problems, suggestions, etc., we want to hear them. You can e-mail Recruitment Sales Manager Kay Flores directly at kflores@bakersfield.com. Tom, "save a couple files as is"? What do you mean? Remember, all that's changing right now is the look the People page, plus the alphabetical index and the new article submission capability (which is part of the newsroom's citizen journalism program). At any rate, you guys know that you can e-mail me whenever you run up against bugs or usability issues. posted by

I just increased the number of comments per page to 45. Is that a good number? It's easy to change that, so everyone should let us know what they find most useful. posted by

Pete, I know you saw my comment on Dan's blog earlier about the timestamp problem. When we started back up early this morning, the timestamp on posts and comments was wrong. When we fixed it, the last comment posted pre-fix was at 4:55. So, until 4:56, unfortunately, new comments will surface on the new comments page below that, in chronological order, until we catch up. So you can still find all the new stuff, just scroll down till you find comments timestamped with the current time. Also, the "new comments" box on the People page is loading with comments as they are posted, in correct chronological order. Mattloch, there are glitches with every new upgrade, and we try to find all the technical bugs and usability problems that we can before launch, in beta, often with nonstaffers testing as well. But there will always be issues, and that's why we rely on folks like you to e-mail with stuff that you catch. As Dan said, a lot of things are easy fixes, like number of entries on the queue page. We definitely want and value user feedback on usability issues like that. And as for your problem deleting your own comments, if anyone comes across problems like that, please e-mail me. posted by

I'm still completely confused about everything being changed, but I'm trying to get the hang of it. Did I break the site every time I tried to log in? I thought about e-mailing you, Jason, but I was too lazy. posted by

I feel all edjumacted now. The fibonacci sequence makes me go cross-eyed. How 'bout when you click on a comment and it's on the third page of the blog, but it comes up on the first page, can that be changed??? posted by
