jasonsperber - > Blogging Bako -> Tonight: An Outage. Tomorrow: A Make-Over.
Tonight: An Outage. Tomorrow: A Make-Over.

From 12 midnight tonight until about 5 a.m. PST tomorrow morning, Thursday, February 1st, blogs, profiles and all other People-related content will be inaccessible due to a server upgrade.

When the site goes back up, however, you'll find a few new surprises.  First, the People page, your homebase for navigating Bakersfield.com's blogosphere, has been redesigned with both form and function in mind.  Second, under the tab "All Blogs," you'll find an index of all blogs on the site in alphabetical order by blog title.

Finally, when you click on "post something new" to publish your latest blog post, you'll notice something different.  You'll have the option to write a blog post, an event listing, or an article.  Basically, this will streamline the editing and publication process of our citizen journalism program, "Your Words."  Unlike on the blogs, article submissions will enter a queue to be edited and chosen for publication on the Californian's website, in the print edition of the newspaper, or both.  This new way of submitting user-generated content is just another step in the growth of citizen journalism at The Bakersfield Californian.

As always, we invite your feedback on these changes.  See you on the other side!

Looking forward to seeing the pig in that poke, Jason.  But what will I do from midnight to five?  Work?

I'm toast if I don't get the name right the first time.- - -

By the title of the blog post or by the name of the blog as a whole Jason?
posted by jasonsperber on Jan 31, 2007 at 03:23 PM
That's alphabetical by title of the whole blog (not individual posts).  :)
posted by anonymous on Jan 31, 2007 at 03:25 PM
Wow...many of the blogs are going to start with A.  Dumb move by the Califorian.

Thanks Jason..just curious :)

I'm already so confused...and I was just getting used to this...it ought to get simpler, not more complicated!!!  I don't want any options. I just want to post blogs and read other people's blogs.

And everyone is right about the "A" thing. Gawd!!!

Not yet, Dusty.  :)  And um, your uh, colorful metaphor...  Heh.

Should I edit it sir?

Well, let's see how it looks first.  Just save a couple of the files as is, m'kay?

Considering that it's hard to screw up a jobs section in a town that has no jobs.

Termite, it shouldn't be more complicated.  When you click "post something," you'll then click on the "blog" icon to go the the familiar blog post composition page.

As for finding blogs, posts, and comments, the redesigned People page will still have a "new comments" box and a "new posts" box, as well as the familiar "new comments" and "new posts" pages, on which the most recent stuff is on top.

An alphabetical index is merely another way to find content.  It's not replacing anything.  I can find "The Termite Blog" under T, "Makes Things Go" under M, and "Life" under L, in addition to being able to find your stuff by seeing your profile picture under "recent visitors" and finding your blog that way, or by seeing that you've just posted something and it's coming up under "new posts."  That's all.  It's not like businesses naming themselves AAA-1 in order to be in the front of the yellow pages, it's just another way to list and find your blogs.

Re: Kern County Jobs, we are sincerely trying to provide the best information and user experience we can.  That said, any new product is going to have issues, and if you have specific complaints, problems, suggestions, etc., we want to hear them.  You can e-mail Recruitment Sales Manager Kay Flores directly at kflores@bakersfield.com

Tom, "save a couple files as is"?  What do you mean?  Remember, all that's changing right now is the look the People page, plus the alphabetical index and the new article submission capability (which is part of the newsroom's citizen journalism program).

At any rate, you guys know that you can e-mail me whenever you run up against bugs or usability issues.

I haven't learned to use the old content yet.  Can any kind hearted person direct me to a tutorial of  this site.

Sorry, Jason, thought it was going to be a full overhaul instead of just a few new ways to access the database.

Alright, I've already noticed a step backwards. Only 15 blog posts per page (on the "Recent Blogs" page)? WTF? Now instead of scrolling through a page or two (before getting too far back into blogs nobody is posting on anymore) we need to go through ten or more? How is this "better"? If you're looking for a way to increase the daily page cisit counts, why not make people scroll through each blog on a separate page? If there's a setting I need to change on my profile to get more than 15 blogs per page, please let me know so that I don't get carpal tunnel syndrome just to get to a blog from two days back.....

Great, now I can't even go back to delete multiple posts, after the blog didn't show that the pages themselves only show 15 posts. Nice. Can we at least beta test these things before you go live with them, Jason?
posted by pachecod on Feb 1, 2007 at 01:08 PM
Hi. I'm not sure why you couldn't delete multiple comments, but I just deleted the duplicates for you. It took two clicks on a Delete link next to each comment. Easy :-)

I just increased the number of comments per page to 45. Is that a good number? It's easy to change that, so everyone should let us know what they find most useful.

Oh and Tom -- there are some new things coming very soon. We just can't talk about them yet. Part of this upgrade was to set the stage for some cool new stuff. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks. We're giving you some Inside Information here. And that right there is a hint :-)

What's up with the New Comments page? It's not updating and hasn't since this morning.

Who cares about new features if the old basic ones don't work. Grrrrrrr.

Pete, I know you saw my comment on Dan's blog earlier about the timestamp problem.  When we started back up early this morning, the timestamp on posts and comments was wrong.  When we fixed it, the last comment posted pre-fix was at 4:55.  So, until 4:56, unfortunately, new comments will surface on the new comments page below that, in chronological order, until we catch up.  So you can still find all the new stuff, just scroll down till you find comments timestamped with the current time.  Also, the "new comments" box on the People page is loading with comments as they are posted, in correct chronological order.

Mattloch, there are glitches with every new upgrade, and we try to find all the technical bugs and usability problems that we can before launch, in beta, often with nonstaffers testing as well.  But there will always be issues, and that's why we rely on folks like you to e-mail with stuff that you catch.  As Dan said, a lot of things are easy fixes, like number of entries on the queue page.  We definitely want and value user feedback on usability issues like that.  And as for your problem deleting your own comments, if anyone comes across problems like that, please e-mail me

This is the first time I've been able to log in today. I was afraid I kept breaking the site, because the last two times I tried to log in it would go to the page that said you were updating and to wait an hour, so I'd have to wait awhile before I could refresh and be able to see the new design on the people page. It's interesting...

I'm still completely confused about everything being changed, but I'm trying to get the hang of it. Did I break the site every time I tried to log in? I thought about e-mailing you, Jason, but I was too lazy.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Feb 1, 2007 at 03:10 PM
I see Jason, it's only about 9 down from the top of the new comments list at this point.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Feb 1, 2007 at 03:13 PM
Yep, it was you Robin. (JK)

Hey Jason, you should change the title of this to

Tonight: An Outage  Tomorrow: An Outrage
posted by randomfactor on Feb 1, 2007 at 05:15 PM
Actually, I'm pretty sure *I* broke it. :)  Won't say how.

Thanks for the tip off, Dan.  Looking forward to it.

Is there some reason it was switched from 50 posts per page to 45? When there were multiple pages to scholl through, 50 made the jump count easy if you were trying to pick up where you left off. If there's something technically magical about 45, you should go with that (because I don't want you to break it), but it seems to me this is an "if it ain't broke" situation.
posted by jasonsperber on Feb 2, 2007 at 09:09 AM
Mattloch, this wasn't a conscious decision on anyone's part to reset the number of posts listed on the new posts page, it was just a glitch that occurred when we restarted on the new server.  Dan's reset it to 50 now.  You know you can always contact us directly about these kind of concerns.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Feb 2, 2007 at 09:21 AM
I say it should be 55, as that would make it fall right into the Fibonacci sequence.
posted by randomfactor on Feb 2, 2007 at 09:31 AM
Don't go all DaVinci Code on us Pete.  I was holding out for 23 per page myself...
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Feb 2, 2007 at 09:47 AM
If you're going to pick a prime number, at least make it a larger one so we can see more comments, you know like 47

Do you ever watch NUMB3RS? Even though it's not really my type of show, it's pretty good.

I feel all edjumacted now.  The fibonacci sequence makes me go cross-eyed.

How 'bout when you click on a comment and it's on the third page of the blog, but it comes up on the first page, can that be changed???

posted by mattloch on Feb 2, 2007 at 09:49 AM
If Pete can't go Da Vinci on us, then you can't go Illuminati on us, Random. Fair's fair.
