Corporate Zero - Wal-Mart Sells Junk

Every time I buy a piece of electronics at Wal-Mart when I bring it home something goes wrong with it. I have had to exchange, in the last two years, two Durabrand TV sets and a Durabrand stereo. I finally got a good TV when I upgraded to a Philips.

Wal-Mart can sell for less because they sell cheap junk made in China. I bought an RCA stereo set, model RS 2663 last month, and now the CD door won't open. RCA used to be made in America, but now is made in China.

Now Wal-Mart wants me to pay an extra $13.00 to upgrade to a Sony. I'm sick and tired of bringing home cheap junk from China and hauling it back to Wal-Mart. From now on, I'll buy my electronics from Radio Shack. Hauling things back and forth from Wal-Mart is just too much trouble. I'd rather pay more elsewhere.

I'm taking this RCA back to Wal-Mart and eating the cost. They can have it. I'm sick of junk products. I'll be emailing the Wal-Mart CEO and calling corporate headquarters.

I must have been one of the lucky ones; I bought a Durabrand TV at Wal Mart in February of 2005, and it's worked perfectly. My Samsung DVD/VCR, bought at Target in May of 2005, worked fine until all of a sudden the DVD player won't play anything. It says "unable to play DVD" no matter which one I put in. I got it on sale for $77, so, I really can't complain.

You get what you pay for.  With electronics I've found that it is best to stay with the well known brands and not buy the cheapest but the best.

Right there Roy~ buy the best you can afford, use the reviews on web sites for guidance...and Wall Mart has proven to be an umreliable source for the products Mr. Sage buys there.

ALL, my shopping has been done on-line.  I read the reviews, consider, and HEY!!!!!.....there ya go.  I save the deductable on fender/benders.....keeps me out of the parking lot.  I  don't hafta snooze on the cart  "waiting-in-line".  Happy Shopping and all of that crap.

Totally agree Rose!  Last year and this year all my shopping will be via my computer. Yes, I pay shipping & handling but it is well worth NOT haveing the stress, rudness, gas used and just plain grief one gets from others at a mall or major store.

Why don't you just stop shopping there?  If you know that they're mass producing junk, for pennies, in China, then why would you continue to patronize the establishment?  I mean, you mentioned that you've had to return items before, so it sounds like there's a pattern and you shop there regularly.  I'm not saying this to be rude or snarky: Just curious.

I haven't stepped into a Walmart in five years.  My DH and I did a comparison of the items we buy regularly and found out that the difference between Target and Walmart is incredibly small (maybe a 1% difference).  And, knowing that Target isn't out there bullying manufacturers into non-negotiable and impossible contracts makes me more comfortable about shopping there.  Walmart is a bully.  Sam Walden is probably turning in his grave at what they've done to his philosophy and company.

Odd...I've never had to take back an electronic item that I bought at WM..and I've bought plenty.  Maybe it's because I always buy name brands.

I've been looking at all in one scanners and WM beat the others hands down for HP's with the same model #.  Maybe you folks can tell my why I should pay more for the same item at say, Target.   (who didn't carry them at all.)

I find it sort  fo funny that folks will hate WM for buying from foreign countries and refuse to buy from them while they go to a major appliance store and buy the same brand.

Does anyone have a list of companies who buy electronic items made 100% here in the US?

(edited.  I agree with Possum in that Sam Walton must be spinning.  If you ever read "Made In America (I think that's the name) about how he started the company and how he felt about it, you'd really respect that man.  His family and the number crunchers have done Mr. Sam a great disservice.

you might want to check out cnet.com first before buying eletronic equip and find out the right and consumer reviews. Also will let you know where to buy it for the best buy.

Thanks SF...I already checked out consumer reports and for my needs there are several HP models that are good ones at a price point under 100 dollars.  I also checked with Best Buy and the same scanner at Walmart is about 30 bucks less.  Now you folks may have the money to afford to boycott Walmart because you don't like their tactics, but 30 bucks is half my cable/internet service bill and I'm not in the habit of throwing money down a toilet just on principle.

We've gone over this before and for those who hate to see that 12 year old Chinese girl slave over the components of a TV for pennies a day need to remember those parts go into Urners electronics just like they go into Walmarts.  Not to mention that may be the only money coming into her house for food.  I'd like to see her make more too, but I can't control foreign economics nor can I afford to be that altruistic.  The option would be for me to NOT buy at all and I fail to see how that would help anyone.

I've had good "Luck" at WM so far, and I think it is luck no matter where you buy electronics.  I bought a new Visio LCD three months ago at Costco and it died on me.  They will not take it back like they used to so I had to call Visio. A tech showed up after a week, couldn't repair it so I had to call Visio again.  They are going to send a new unit after I send the broken one back or give them a credit card #. So IMO WM, Target, KMART, Costco are in the same class,  WM is just more efficient and probably pays their employees better.  BTW I really dislike Best Buy.

Why was my comment, including the list Nancy requested, deleted?

For a lot of reasons (most mentioned in above posts) I shop at WalMart. There are a number of thing I use a lot of that are much cheaper there.  Their products are as good as any other store as long as you stick to name brands and use your head.  They do have a good return policy that you will not find at some other stores. The people who work there are treated fairly and seem to like their jobs.  WalMart and their civic responsibility are an asset to the community.  If all our manufacturing had not been forced overseas due to Union activity, high taxes and government regulations we would see a lot more "made in America" products.  I had a guy ask me last week why I drive a Toyota Tacoma instead of an American truck.  I told him " when Ford, Chevy or Dodge make a small pickup as good as the Toyota I will gladly buy one. Until that time I will stick to my trouble free, long lasting Toyota. End of story...

Yup Roy...exactly right.

Possum..I didn't see a list ..when did you post it?  I can't imagine why Mr. Harris woudl delete it since it probably would support his opinion.  I haven't had any deleted but last week lost a couple in the posting..very frustrating.

Anglo.I'm with you..I don't like Best Buy either and I had a bad experience with a return with them and one with CompUsa.  Walmart has a "we'll take it back no matter what" policy and I appreciate that.  Granddaughter used to work for Kohls and said they do the same thing.  She said they even take back stuff that didn't come from Kohls because they want you to buy their products.  When I worked at WM our store manager liked to tell the story of a lady who brought back a 2 liter of Safeway soda and demaded her money back because she wasn't satisfied.  He told her he couldn't do that but would replace it with with a Sam's 2 liter and ever after when she came to the store she made a point of saying hello to him.

That kind of attitude is one thing that keeps people coming back, and as Roy said, Brawny is Brawny and Charmin is Charmin no matter whether you get them at WM, Dollar Tree, or Albertson.  HP is HP no matter where you buy it.  Using your head is the key.

I don't look for schmooozing anyway..I look for value.

That's the way a business ought to be... I often wonder whatever happened to the old saying "The customer is always right". Seems lately most businesses seem like they are pulling their teeth out to help you with something, unless of course they get commission for sales, but once the sale is made you may as well disappear. Contractors as well, I had a huge cottonwood tree I needed cut down a few years back, just about everyone I called for an estimate seemed to groan over the phone. One guy had the nerve to be about three hours late, wrote me an overinflated estimate and looked me in the eye and said "We will be here in the morning to start"... excuse me !!  I don't think so, I had a real nice bunch of guys remove it for me for way under half of what "Mister three hours late wanted".... The customer is right for without customers where would these businesses be ?

And you are correct, HP is HP and Charmin is Charmin no matter how much it costs.
