There are a bunch of apartments in the area just east of Bakersfield College I'd look at.  Used to live there (many years back...)  Good bus service (if you need that) and lots of stores.

Fish around this site (bakersfield.com)  you will find a lot of interactive maps.  Maps dedicated to nightlife, dangrous buldings, etc.  You might even find a Crime Map.

No one can tell you what you will like.  Go with your gut feeling and make sure you feel safe.  Also consider where you are going to work or go to school.  You don't want to be too far from those.

Good Luck

Northeast Bakersfield is generally less expensive than some of the other nice areas of Bakersfield.

Any large conglomeration of apartment buildings tends to have drug abusers and rowdy kids. Look for apartments that cater to working adults.

There are a lot of nice places between downtown and Oak Street.

Sort of depends on your price range.

First and foremost check with the police department on crime rates vs areas of town.

Some things I have learned:

Downtown area is plagued with burglaries.
Anywhere near Union Ave you will have gang activity.
Many of the gang bangers live in the apartments on Ash near Ming so avoid those.

I agree with the above poster that if your funds are limited the area near Bakersfield College may be your best choice.

Racist in Stockdale????.....where exactly is defined as Stockdale?
I also agree a big NO to Oildale. Except around North High area.

I also agree a big NO to Oildale. Except around North High area.

As long as you live north of Francis Street you'll be okay. The Norris Road area is the worst for racism.

Just south of China Grade Loop or anywhere north of China Grade Loop is integrated.

I live in 08 and we are integrated here in my part of town. Wasn't always that way sadly.

When I moved to Bakersfield, I heard all those stories about Oildale, but I started a computer school on Chester and never had any problems, except lack of clients.  While their I found a nice mobil home park near Airport and Roberts, space rent is cheap, so I bought a mobil home, I hadn't planned to stay here this long, and didn't want to get tied down to a 30 year mortgage here.  (Wish I had bought then, coulda made a bundle a few months ago, but thats another story).

I walk a lot, and have ventured on foot in all directions, all times of day and night and I have not seen or encountered any problems.  In fact I have never seen any sheriffs detaining people, or responding to crime in the 6 years I've lived here.  My son rents an apartment by Olive Drive and Victor, rents not bad, and he has a nice 3 br/2ba, he and his family also considers it very safe.  Thats the area I'd recommend.

The northeast is nice. I've lived there (Fairfax) almost 7 years now and I really like it.  I have an apartment with a very large fenced patio, washer/dryer hook-ups, nice, big kitchen and large master bedroom.   My parking space is right outside my apartment (shorter grocery-carrying distance).  No garage, but a carport.  The rent is $800 a month.  While not cheap, it's cheaper than the northwest!

All of the above are great suggestions~this place is like others,it has some bad apples but for the most part we are all really nice.I have lived in my home in the Oleander area for 30+~never had any trouble here, but not a lot of apartments,a few tucked in between houses do exist though~so be safe,be happy and enjoy our city!

Read our Rental Life blog for interesting tidbits and discussion; also, keep an eye out for a new Bakersfield.com section about rentals sometime in the near future.

I'm just curious...where are you moving from and why are you moving to Bakersfield?!  If you are a hetero, Christian Republican, you will fit right in and the city will cater to you.  Otherwise, be prepared for a little adversity because a lot of people here don't like "lifestyles" outside of their own "comfort zone."  I'm only here because of my family...nothing more.  Just my 2 cents.  Trust me, someone will attack me in Jesus' name  for what I just typed.  Anyways, I welcome you.

If you want lotsa shade and a more homely feeling, I recommend Oleander, Westchester and the Eastside around the college.  Oildale is ok if you're north of Norris.

Actually you should move to Tehachapi or Bodfish  where all the good people live, they are good republican Christians and their sh** don't stink., wait that works in the Northwest and Southwest too, very confusing.

redkernhero,

I live in Tehachapi, don't be telling people to move here.  We are growing so much that my deer herd has diminished from 14 to 4.  It used to be quiet here but now all we hear are bulldozers and falling oak trees.  The only thing you got right is the comment about the Republicans,

I have to laugh at Bakersfield republicans.........While they may have the beliefs of a solid republican there are really very few here that can honestly afford to be in the tax bracket of a true republican so to reap any rewards........Dont worry when you move here its just a bunch of red neck working folks.......Welcome to the dust bowl

I'm always amazed at the people who move to Bakersfield then start to bash it.  Hopefully you won't become one of those Madison.  This city has a lot of positive features, people just need to give it a chance.

BTW.  The ones who think Oildale isn't integrated need to take another look.  I honestly never thought I"d see the day...but it's here.

The Northwest side is great.  Little crime and some nice neighborhoods.  Trust me, I've lived in the NW part of Bakersfield since 1989.
