I am a Concerned Parent of an Owen's Primary Student
Ever since my child began attending Owens Primary, I noticed that the atmosphere in the main office was unfriendly, abusive and toxic. I attribute this to the leadership of the principal and how she sets the tone. I, like many of the parents resorted to other support staff such as the counselor for guidance. Recently, she was placed on administrative leave and arrested for standing up for the students and parents of Owens Primary. I am worried about my child's treatment at school. He does not feel safe at school. He loves his teacher but I worry that she is also intimidated by the principal. A group of parents are meeting at Martin Luther King Community Center, Monday at 7 PM. If you have a student at Owens primary or you are concerned about quality education in our community, please join us. 3 comments from 3 users

I hate to be a bearer of bad news, but that school has been that way for many years. I was a teachers aide there back in the early to mid 70's and I only stayed a week and refused to ever go back even though I needed a job. The teachers treated the aides like trash and the front office people weren't any better. I also heard how rude they were to parents and had I been a parent of a child in that school at that time, those rude people would have been looking for a new job. I did get a permanent aide position at Pioneer Drive and was happy as a clam, what a difference :-) What is missing middlepath???? posted by

I went to Owens Elementary in the 80's. I hated that school! I have nightmares that I'll wake up and be at that school again. It was a ghetto school with ghetto staff. I was a part of the GATE program there and the school had a lot of resources which was uncommon in the 80's (Computer lab, science lab, etc.) but the atmosphere was just toxic. Staff talked to students as if they were doodoo. I recall us having unusually long school hours (7:45-4:00) plus I lived out of the district which augmented my dislike for the shcool.
