Religion or Spam?
Seriously, what's up with all the preachy blogs?  Am I to believe there are three unique individuals daily posting their religious beliefs for the masses to share?

Look, I have no problem with religion and folks sharing it with others, especially those who are willing.  And it's not the blogs themselves, for I can choose NOT to read them.  But when I log on to Bakersfield.com and review the most recent blogs, I am looking for what everyone is saying, not just the same message repeated by one or three people.

Sure, go ahead and post your religious views on here.  But three times over, church material in the same day?  I'd like to see what my fellow Bakersfieldios have to say about politics and what matters to them, and it's a wee bit more difficult when someone is spamming the blogs with their religious mantra.  I've got daily mass for my religious needs, as well as my own prayer life and relationship with Christ.  I log on here for reasons other than to sort through homilies and iconography.  Can we save a little room for everyone else's blogs on the most recent blog chart?

it is a little over kill. I too generally just pass over them for nothing more than dogma.

At least those are easy to skip over. And I do.

It is the anti-religion freaks that I'm tired of. So you've got a mean-on for religion. Who cares? You really only have to tell us once.

Tell Buffoo that. He started the whole thing.

Oh, so you've resorted to simple name calling now. Honestly if you're trying to insult someone, you should at least be a little more creative.

Bravo Marsh. I was kind of wondering the same thing. Coming from someone as religious as yourself it really says a lot.

Those of us who post here often kind of know where everyone stands, based on our replies ,opinions, sense of humor, or lack thereof. When I log on in the morning and I see the religious posts, it's usually the same few zealots. I never read them, or respond to them. If I want to talk to a kook, I can drive down to the family planning clinic on H St. and talk to one of the Palmquists.

I *LOVE* the daily religious spam.  It makes people as eager to join "their" church as the daily spam I get makes me eager to enlarge my breast size and manhood simultaneously.  Buffoo/Sojourner/Wayfarer clears the way for atheism, may Kali bless them.

gee marsh i was thinking the same thing, boring blog one is enough a day, but i guess it better than

them knocking on your door,,,,lol

RF~ I agree ,but am happy with my man hoods "size"..lol I like to read someones honest grappling with religious feeling,I know when my loss first hit me it was helpful to ponder spiritual matters. But like every day political spam,or union spam or anti-union spam, religious spam offers no real insight ,especially to those unfamiliar with a church..I had to look up homily to even know what the heck that was. If a person is troubled and turns to the Internet, I seriously doubt they will type in b.com looking for answers.Belief.net yes, here not so much.

I have no problem with them posting whatever they want on their blogs. If they choose to waste their time on their drivel, fine.

The part I've never understood -- and it's a practice that continues to this day -- is why their three blogs keep winding up on the Californian home page among the five blogs they tout. Liberal media, my foot...

Thanks, Marsh! But you have to love a devout Christian blog that pronounces itself to be a "Temple Cleanser" and seems to have taken on the Greek mythological mantle of Ajax as an avatar.

How do you decide what is spam.  A lot of people post stuff that I am not interested in and I don't read it.  I got one cyberstalker who has nothing better to do then post dreary parodies of my blogs.  I consider it spam because it has no redeeming value ,but on his blogs he can post what he wants.  Even stuff that is meant to be blatantly offensive to Christians.  My question is why do not more people share their faith on this site.  The secular fundamentalist make a noise far greater than their number in the population.  But the Protestants and Evangelicals are not really representing themselves here.  Not to mention any blogs from professional clergy.  And what of non christian religions.  Surely their must be a few Jews or Muslims who wish to share.  Not to mention adherents of eastern philosophies.  I myself am always glad to listen to sincere, mature people who want an open dialog and not simply looking for a fight.

Spam, in this venue, is repeated posts of cut-and-pasted materials without comment from the poster.  The parodies of your posts at least show some originality.   Related to spam is what Pax does--his every argument seems to be cut-and-pasted from elsewhere.  Almost as if no original thoughts seep through his mind.

.

Maybe you should take a cue from those "more people," who don't post here, Buffoo.  Perhaps they're just more...enlightened than you are.

Wayfarer, it's way cool for you to share your religion.  But once a day, methinks is quite enough.  Same with any other subject from the same person.  If someone posted about, let's say football, three times a day, I'd be weary of it too!

My question is why do not more people share their faith on this site.

Because they read the sixth chapter of Matthew. You're the cyber version of some unshaven guy with high-water pants and unmatched socks who stands on a street corner downtown and makes a horse's a** of himself ranting and raving about heaven and hell.

As massive as the internet is, I'm sure you could find a blog out there that has more religious discussions than the local newspaper blog. This one tends to be local issues and current events.

Not that I'm trying to censor anyone, but if you're looking for kindred spirits in regards to your religion, you might need to google it.
posted by randomfactor on Nov 14, 2007 at 03:08 PM
He's not looking for kindred spirits, he's looking for converts.  And doing it badly.

I posted on some Bible-type forum once. Being me, I stirred up all kinds of trouble with logic (the sabbath is supposed to be on the last day of the week, which is Saturday; it was until Constantine changed it to SUN-day to help placate pagan sun worshippers), and the moderators kept chastising me.

!#$%&!!

Noone, the recent blogposts list on the homepage is recency-based, that is, it is a cached-and-updated (forgive me if I don't know the frequency off-hand) list of the most recently published blogposts according to timestamp, with most recent on top.  They are not selected or featured in the way you seem to have meant.

Except for the Jehovah's Witnesses cult, eh buffojournerwafer7? Something ought to be done about them, right?

I couldn't agree more. I detest the door-to-door preachers.I just have my 70# Boxer go to the door with me when I answer it. I hold his collar and he acts like he has not been fed and is craving fresh meat. The fact that all he wants to do is play and lick them to death is my own little secret. The preachers always seem to suddenly remember that they have an appointment elsewhere.

It is the anti-religion freaks that I'm tired of. So you've got a mean-on for religion. Who cares? You really only have to tell us once.

Let's see, Witbee.

1.  I'm not "anti-religion".  And, the fact that you'd use that term only shows your ignorance about atheists and atheism.  Are you anti-Jewish because your Christian?  Are you anti-Ramadan because you're not Muslim?

2.  Are you serious?  So, it's perfectly acceptable to make multiple posts every day talking about your religion and how everyone not in your religion is going to hell or is just below human, but... Buddha forbid the diests, agnostics, and atheists state their philosophy more than once.  What a hypocirte!

So, Jason, in other words, multiple postings to your blog each day allows you to game the system? The religious wrong keep coming up in rotation because they keep posting their blatherings? Maybe we need a better system/protocol than that...

Unfortunately, it's going to lead to a rule of one blog per customer . . . and possibly limit postings as well.  I'd hate to see that.  I don't care much for making new rules up.  Hopefully he will tire of the spamming.  I suppose he feeds off of the attention.

Best thing is to never open/read the blog in the first place (no views).  And the second is to never comment, easily done if you avoid viewing it.  In that way, with zero views and zero comments, it'll evaporate.  One can only talk to a brick wall for so long a time.

I agree...I usually steer clear of any of the religion-based blogs, unless they include a subject I am interested in. Let them write what they will. I also do not want to see more limits on the blog.
posted by randomfactor on Nov 15, 2007 at 05:02 PM

Marsh, that would logically lead to more sockpuppets.

.

Pax and Buffoo have been talking to a celestial brick wall for decades.  Don't expect them to stop now.

Earlier today I posted a joke on one of Wayfarer's blogs. I never post on religious blogs, but I thoght it was funny, based on what he posted. Anyway, it included the word "prostitute", which he said was "dirty". So he deleted my post. I sure hope I don't go to hell for saying such a dirty word. I have a feeling I'll be saying a few words worse than prostitute tomorrow, when I play in my weekly Friday golf game. Please forgive me Lord.

The reason he said that is because none of the prostitutes in California will do him - no matter how much he offers. He was recently seen running frantically down California Avenue while being chased by a guy in a lime-green pimpmobile.

He can always go to Yokuts Park and tap his foot 3 times while sitting in his stall. Kind of like that old Tony Orlando song, "Knock Three Times If You Really Love Me".

I know of no rule that restricts religious posts on the blog.  They don't bother me in the least.  I just skip over them. He should realize that he is "preaching to the choir". He's not going to convert anyone on this blog.
posted by NancyII on Nov 16, 2007 at 05:52 AM

Roy..I've often thought the same thing.  I've watched the brouhaha over the religious posts that the bloggers keep calling spam and wonder why it matters to anyone what topic is put here.  How hard it is to just not click on that persons blog?  If no one clicks on them they fade away and scroll off the bottom of the list.  What's really funny is when people continually respond to them even if it's criticism, it keeps them right up front.

The other funny thing is that when they're posted, they don't make it to the comment section if no one comments on them.  You folks who are complaining about them are perpetuating them.
