A Delicious New Steakhouse in Bakersfield!

I recently enjoyed a fantastic dinner at a new steakhouse on the east side of Bakersfield.  The “Canyon Steakhouse” opened recently with little fanfare, but has all the promise of becoming a mini-Crystal Palace for those who live in the boondocks east of Fairfax.

Being a long time veteran of the restaurant industry (I worked for the Olive Garden for the better part of a decade before starting my career as a teacher—a superb, well run  restaurant in its own right) I have enough experience to tell good from bad in a restaurant.  And the Canyon Steakhouse rates very highly in my opinion!

The Canyon Steakhouse has fair selection of steaks and entrees to entice meat lovers of every persuasion.  I am a prime rib man myself, and cautiously ordered the smaller offering of said delicacy.  I was surprised with the incredible portion for the small portion filled half my dinner plate!  Cooked to mouth-watering perfection, (cut the horns off as I say—I like to hear the moo as I bite in!) the cut was delicious to the last bite.  I spared nothing to take home.  In addition, the baked potato was served with a selection of toppings in a soufflé cup, so I had plenty of sour cream and other toppings, which I was free to add according to my taste.

Beverages were served from Mason jars, a trend in the steakhouse industry, which ensures the waiter needs come by a little less to keep your glass filled, and you have plenty to quench your thirst.

Especially tasty were the veggie appetizers that included strips of carrots, olives, and pickled peppers, that provided a local, and different introduction to the meal.

The bar area has facilities for a band, dancing, several screens to watch the big game, and other devices of entertainment, including pool tables, a darts, air hockey, and video games.  It’s going to be a lot harder to complain about boredom on the east side of town now the Canyon Steakhouse is open!

I suggest we bloggers make a point of meeting there sometime soon, as a chance to shake hands and put faces to name.  And most importantly, to enjoy a fantastic steak dinner, which we all deserve and the Canyon Steakhouse is so good at serving up!

The Canyon Steakhouse is located next to the old Mesa Marin site, on 178 near the intersection with Niles, and just across from the new housing developments east of Fairfax.  It’s 9 o’clock in the morning, and I’m already hungry for another Canyon Steakhouse meal!

Thanks for the tip, Marsh.  That's my area, I may have to visit soon...

Sounds great, Marsh.  I know you have little ones--is it family friendly?

Yes, it's family friendly.  The bar area is separated from the restaurant,  and it doesn't look to attract the rough and rowdy crowd.  In fact, I found the patrons to appear rather upscale, not surprising given the well-off developments in the area.

Is it anything like McGees, or even Maxwell's? McGees has great, flavorful aged meat and excellent sides, and the best steak I ever had was one that Terry had handled that literally melted in my mouth like butter. For steaks beyond reproach I go to those two. I may have to put in a visit to the Canyon just to see how they stack up against the others. Thanks for the heads up.

I was put off by being served a beverage in a jar. For the price you pay for meals there, you should at least get a glass! The owner use to run a convenient store so he has the convenient store mind set........less for more money. Lets see if this business lasts. That building has a history of bad vibes and failure.

The jar is consistent with the atmosphere, and is typical fare for a steakhouse.  And with the building up of the area, the business is now poised to succeed, where others failed before.

The old steakhouse/night club failed because it was just too far out of town.  The east side hadn't grown enough and it was a journey for folks on the south side.  That was a long stretch of road for anyone who had a couple of drinks and a great set up for cops.  I had a friend who worked there and I used to go sit with her on teen night while she took money at the door.  Now THAT was an experience!  My daughter worked there when the nightclub was first open and popular..it just didn't last.

Marsh is right about the jars for drinks.  You get the same typle of thing in a lot of rustic steakhouses.  You just fit the threads to the grooves on your mouth and drink  Any goold ole okie who grew up drinking from mason jars knows that.

My guess is this steakhouse will do a lot better then the ones in the past because of the growth in that area.  Still, it's pretty specialized and peple do like diversity.  I wish them luck.  Of all the businesses you can get into, restaurants have one of the highest rates of failure.  It's not easy to make it in that business.

In response to this anonymous quote; the owner had been in the restaurant business for many years prior to his as the blogger put conenient store mind set.  He was my roommate and best-man in my wedding and knows a thing or two about cooking and restaurants.  This has been his dream for many years and has now been realized.  My wife and I used to go there when it was The Cadillac Ranch and yes it was a long drive out there, but worth it.  I am sure this will be the same.

If someone is put off by drinks served in a jar when the food is outstanding, they must not care as much about the food as they do in being hoity toity.  ;-)

Haven't been there yet, but if the steaks are good as say............Jockos in Nipomo, I don't care if the drinks are in a dixie cup and the food is served on paper plates.

Tittle was right on with the pork ribs.  they were "smokey", tender and great. My wife had the Lobster.  We arrived at 4:03 and had expected to wait until they got set up.  Servers were still arriving, however the owner seated us and attended to our needs.  The ribs were the best I've had in years, my wives lobster  brought a big smile.  The white Zin ask very good, smooth, and cold.     The salad was good, cold and crisp, and very good blu cheese with crumbles topped it off well.  The chocolate cake was warm, and topped with vanilla ice cream.    Well worth the price, close by for us in the  N.E.  VERY good dining establishment  -  Oh NO  -  plain water glass, and nice wine glass....   Oh Well  . . . .
