Big trucks in small spaces
Steven Mayer took these photos in the Eye Street parking garage. He had this to say: Why do drivers of monster trucks park in compact only spaces in parking garages? Do they want their fenders bent? And with the second photo: Long-bed pickups don't fit here. See something around town that bugs you? Take a picture with your cell phone and text it to mobile@bakersfield.com! Sometimes pictures don't always tell the entire, or accurate, story It looks like this truck is parked in a 1 hour parking space, if I can make out the sign correctly. So I would assume they would be there less than one hour. Plus, the driver seems to be being considerate by parking away from other vehicles, since no one else is parked around them. And is this a part of the parking garage where this truck parking is not going to effect anyone? This really doesn't bug me, but misleading or inaccurate newspaper headlines, and sloppy reporting, does... posted by

I was in the garage too at that time, and this truck is right where vehicles come around the corner as they ascend to the second floor. Most of us park above the second floor because we pay to park beyond the "arm." You're right, though, the angle doesn't make it look so egregious. posted by

This truck is parked in a compact spot pretty much everyday. There are plenty of non-compact spots available in the first two floors. I'll just take the safe bet and assume the owner is being an [edit.]. posted by

Oh, brother, Mr. Blue. First off, this isn't reporting we're talking about. It's a photo with a line of text all done by phone. It's a pet peeve, not a social crisis. It's simple, really. If you look closely, the truck is parked right AT the corner where drivers have to make a hairpin turn. My second photo, which I don't see on the blog, shows "Compact Only" written in block letters on the inside wall. The entire inside wall parking area is designated for shorter vehicles because that's the way the parking garage was designed. Not only did the driver park a long-bed truck in a "compact only" space, but the driver picked the most hazardous position on the inside wall -- the place where drivers must make hard U-turns, sometimes with oncoming traffic. It's just common sense.

I understand Mr. Mayer. We all have pet peeves. If I am not mistaken, the parking garage you took this photo in is city owned, which makes it public property, therefore parking laws apply. So why don't you do something about it instead of posting pictures, if it bugs you so much? posted by

What fun is that? I don't want the guy to get a citation. I just want him to think. I just got tagged with a $35 parking ticket, so I'm feeling his pain. posted by

Heh. What a punk. Some people are just jerks. I don't mean to be a nit-picker, OldBlue, but... OldBlue is going to want to beat the crap out of me for this one, but I just had to do it. I couldn't resist. That Pacheco guy will probably think it's funny, too, because he seems to think it is my life's mission to point out every spelling and grammar error on all the blogs. I usually only do that when I'm working for a newspaper, but I haven't done that for over a year. posted by

OK, this reminds me of the former poster who was taking pictures, while driving, of people running red lights. I thought of her yesterday as I was attempting a left hand turn with a green light and a man came barreling through his red light. Then had the to give ME the finger! Bitch about it because it makes you feel better. Just don't expect him to move his truck. He obviously likes that spot. (This is assuming it's a man's truck) Maybe there's some cutie who parks nearby and it gives him a birds eye view of her legs as she's exiting her car. posted by

Michele, good idea ... maybe he'll join the blog, make a tearful confession and swear to never again park in a "compact" spot ... at least until he gets a Mini Cooper. Or ... he'll set off his car alarm so I can drag out another pet peeve to complain about. Yay! Robin, it sound like you have the same sickness I have: We can't pass up a grammar or diction error without correcting it or thinking SOMEBODY should do something. Definitely a newspaper thing. But blogs are the ultimate in casualspeak, where rules of punctuation and syntax are made to be broken (note my incorrect use of ellipses).

ET, I'd actually suggest something even worse than that: get yourself a bunch of regular stem caps, some BBs, and crazy glue. You simply glue the BBs to the insides (top) of the caps. When you see someone parking badly, just replace one of their caps with one of yours. The BB will push the stem valve ever so slightly when you screw it on, making the tire leak air over time (hours, or even days). The owner will most likely drive to a gas station to fill their low-pressure tire- unscrew the cap, fill up the tire, and then replace the cap. Then the BB starts its business again. They'll be driving to the gas station every day or two to fill their tire, all the time it is the cap making it go flat. They may even go to a tire shop to have the tire looked at. Dollars to doughnuts it gets a clean bill of health from the shop, and they'll drive on their merry way, never knowing the truth. They may even replace the (prefectly fine) tire. And you're right, trucks like that have pricey tires. High performance cars have expensive tires as well.

Actually, for the sake of the argument, it is NOT a "monster truck", it is a normal Dodge Ram pick-up. Those are stock rims, not aftermarket rims. Yeah, I know..that doesn't change the problem. And there is large vehicle parking on the bottom floor on the west end of the garage. It's where I park my Suburban when I am dowtown. posted by

I was headed into the lot at my bank near Winco one day when the car ahead of me swung through two empty spaces and parked kitty wampus taking up two spaces on the other side. My plan was to pull through and park beside her but she scotched THAT idea. I was able to park behind her so I wasn't affected too much it was just the idea that she was another parking space hog. UBOC, white Toyota, blonde big tangled hairdo with micro mini skirt and general hooker appearance. What also got me was the fact that she parked where the ATM customers park and walked around the building to the door. I don't want my car scratched up either but I have never taken up two spaces to prevent that happening. Which probably explains the two dents in my drivers side door where someone apparently opened THEIR door with enough force to damage my car. Dang..where was my head? I didn't think to use my cell phone for one of my pet peeves. posted by

Smayer-The reason I was saying print it out is because obviously you haven't the nerve to say anything directly to him. I was not implying he'd come here and make a tearful confession as you stated. I could care less where the idiot parks, his car not mine. Have it towed if it bothers you so much. Mattloch-very funny and very good!!! posted by

I passed Southwest Urgent Care twice on Wednesday about three hours apart. Both times, someone had stopped on the side of the parking lot road that winds from Urgent Care back to the light on Stockdale with their flashers on. It wasn't like there was a dearth of parking either. They just couldn't be bothered to actually park down a row while running their "quick" errand into Urgent Care. posted by

I can't blame the truck driver.
Those spaces are criminally small, even for a compact. Most of the spaces in the garage are for compacts, though Bakersfield is a truck town.
Still, this town has free parking. I've lived in cities where downtown spots run 7 bucks or more an hour.
Peace, love, door dings.

Wow! I think I touched a collective nerve. Nancy pointed out the Arrogant Parker who believes her car is so perfect, it deserves to take up TWO parking spaces. Shwaine recalled the Blinker Parker who kicks on his emergency flashers and parks in the fire lane with the expectation that people will think it's a small fire truck. et suggested carrying a blade to slice the tires of parking hogs, while Matt came up with an ingenious and less destructive alternative. And Michele called into question my machismo by suggesting I wouldn't have the nerve to confront the dude directly. NO KIDDING? I may be cranky, but I'm not stupid. If you thought road rage was bad, try parking garage aggression.

My pet peeve isn't parking, so much -- though that can be -- but the folks that, pulling out of a parking lot go across the entrance at a 45 degree angle and, while waiting for a break in traffic so they can exit the lot, cut off the entrance to anybody else who's trying to turn in. Hello, McFly!? And invariably, it's at a really busy corner...natch...and they're totally clueless that if they had just swung a little wider and came into their lane straighter, everybody would be better off. posted by

I think we can all agree that people can be quite inconsiderate when they climb into their big metal death machin... err, cars. From parking to driving to parking again, the whole trip can be a medley of inconsiderate and downright dangerous behavior. posted by

OB, I have become very audible with my horn these days. I've had it with the fist pounding steering wheel to vent...the horn works much better. Another thing I hate is a driver who makes a left turn in front of you when there isn't another car in sight. He'd better be hauling G's when he/she does it because I've got the horn honking already. Prolly not the safest thing to do in these violent gang type times but dang..we gotta draw the line someplace. posted by
