Bakersfield, toxic waste dump?

The Riverside Press, is reporting that "A weeklong excavation set to begin Monday will remove a small amount of contaminated soil from the former Wyle Laboratories property in Norco, state officials in charge of the cleanup said.

About 105 cubic yards of soil tainted with lead, perchlorate and polychlorinated biphenyls, known as PCBs, will be dug up and trucked to a dumpsite north of Bakersfield, said Rafat Abbasi, senior project manager with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control."

This can't be good.  Read more

I can still not understand why we have so many of these dumps in what is arguably the largest agricultural area in the country instead of out in the middle of the desert .

Transportation cost, we use to just use it to oil down the dusty roads.........no one will ever know the extent of the abuse back in the good old days...just empty it somewhere and get another load,..... paid by the load......

They used the waste oil out of the PG&E transformers to spray the play yards at the county elementary schools here for years back in the 50`s before they decided it was toxic waste.,and it stank before it soaked in........hmmmmmmm

If it is any consolation, the stuff is only passing through Kern county to the dump located off of hwy 41 just west of I-5 at Kettleman Hills.  It would seem that the San Joaquin Valley has more than its share of dumps with another one scheduled to open in Lost Hills soon.
