Trent Lott called Obamas SCOTUS nominee in 1998.
After doing my own research this weekend of the top 4 rumored leading 'short list' possible nominees, Judge Sotomayor was not my first pick, but our new President again is demonstrating that he is not one to 'take the easy road'. "Judge Sonia Sotomayor seemed like a trouble-free choice when President Clinton nominated her to an appeals court post a year ago. Hers was an appealing story: a child from the Bronx housing projects who went on to graduate summa cum laude from Princeton and become editor of the Yale Law Journal and then a Federal prosecutor. Moreover, she had been a trial judge since 1992, when she was named to the bench by the last Republican president, George Bush. But Republican senators have been blocking Judge Sotomayor's elevation to the appeals court for a highly unusual reason: to make her less likely to be picked by Mr. Clinton for the Supreme Court, senior Republican Congressional aides said in interviews. Senate Republican staff aides said Trent Lott of Mississippi, the majority leader, has agreed to hold up a vote on the nomination as part of an elaborate political calculus; if she were easily confirmed to the appeals court, they said, that would put her in a position to be named to the Supreme Court. And Senate Republicans think that they would then have a difficult time opposing a Hispanic woman who had just been confirmed by the full Senate. ''Basically, we think that putting her on the appeals court puts her in the batter's box to be nominated to the Supreme Court,'' said one senior Republican staff aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity. ''If Clinton nominated her it would put several of our senators in a real difficult position.'' Sotomayor was confirmed on October 2, 1998, in a 67-29 vote The Hispanic Business web site has posted some interesting information concerning this pick:

Mike Huckabee is first out of the gate to put his foot in his mouth and set the tone for the rightwing's attack against her. And it has nothing to do with her qualifications. "The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama's campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric." Because everyone knows that all Hispanic women are named Maria.

I'm delighted wtih the choice, if it t*cks off Mike Huckabee. Of course, he's just pretending to be offended. If she's a bad choice, why'd Bush nominate her? posted by

Whoever the presidents picks, Republicans have vowed to "take a stand." So much for making the GOP "all inclusive." posted by

Well, they're intent on making the Republican party represent the full spectrum from white to white. All they *REALLY* want to do is delay her appointment until after the start of the new term. Obama ought to call the Senate back into session in August to consider the nomination. They'll cave. posted by

I think it was an easy choice for BO. She is so like his wife, a racist, sexist minority that has used Affirmative Action and government set asides to get everything she has all the while making decisions based on politics against white males rather than based on the rule of law. The story line of being the all american success story is baloney. posted by

NAME — Sonia Sotomayor AGE-BIRTHDATE-LOCATION — 54; June 25, 1954; New York, N.Y. EXPERIENCE — judge, U. S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, 1998-present; judge, U. S. District Court Southern District of New York, 1992-1998; private practice, New York City, 1984-1992; assistant district attorney, New York County, 1979-1984 EDUCATION — B.A., Princeton University, 1976; J.D., Yale Law School, 1979. QUOTE — "I don't believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it." — During a 1997 nomination hearing. In one of her most memorable rulings as federal district judge, Sotomayor essentially salvaged baseball in 1995, ruling with players over owners in a labor strike that had led to the cancellation of the World Series. As an appellate judge, she sided with the city of New Haven, Conn., in a discrimination case brought by white firefighters after the city threw out results of a promotion exam because two few minorities scored high enough. Ironically, that case is now before the Supreme Court. Just what I found poking around a bit~ looks fine to me.

If anglo's baseless, racially tinged attack is any indication, the rightwingers are in for a world of hurt if they fight her nomination.

So gird yer loins. Remember: Republicans have no sense of irony and the attention span of spastic five year-olds. Even when they should just walk away from this battle, they're gonna have to toss some meat to the very few constituencies who still support 'em. And it's gonna be big fun in Confirmationville. Warning: The Rude Pundit is not family friendly but is highly insightful and always entertaining.

From the link above~ "Objectively, her qualifications are overwhelming from the perspective of ordinary Americans. She has been a prosecutor, private litigator, trial judge, and appellate judge. No one currently on the Court has that complete package of experience. The objective evidence is that Sotomayor is in fact extremely intelligent. Graduating at the top of the class at Princeton is a signal accomplishment. Her opinions are thorough, well-reasoned, and clearly written. Nothing suggests she isn’t the match of the other Justices. But there isn’t any reason to believe that she is anything other than a tough questioner. My impression from her questioning at oral arguments is that it is similar to the Chief Justice, Justice Scalia, and (in cases in which he was particularly engaged) Justice Souter." posted by

How about what can she do on SCOTUS ? ok...................what can she do? Is she the best out there? What is wrong with having the court resemble the rest of the country? Because the rest of the country is @#$%^&*!@*%$ up BTW, I'm just asking, I personally don't care. Politics is politics and they all have strange bedfellows. so let's try to keep bush jr out of this ok? Whatever damage you THINK bush did or did not do is, at this point in time, a moot point, and one persone is not going to change a whole heck of a lot. Stirring the pot is the first step in pumping out the septic tank, WP. And there's a *LOT* of septage Shrub put into government. At least we know the Republicans won't filibuster her, since they're morally opposed to filibustering on judge nominations. . Many who graduate at the "top" of the class are idiots, What would that make a "C" student like Shrub, then? posted by

i find it funny that i have been SCOURING the internet since yesterday attempting to find some good things she did while she was a Judge, in private practice....as an asst DA
lets just say im still looking "I don't believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it." if she believed what she said, the rizzi case wouldnt be in front of the supreme court this summer. looks like Ruth Bader Ginsberg might have some competition with regards to being the most left on the SC picked because of sex and because of race...yeah, the leftists are attempting to wrong the rights, errrrrrr right the wrongs :) posted by

Thanks to whoever cleaned up my post. My post was my opinion of the nominee and it doesn't surprise me for the reasons I gave. Her decision against the white Firefighters in Cincinnati was in my opinion enough to make her a poor choice. Add some of her other comments concerning white males and making laws from the bench [ can't find the quote ] and she can't be the best of the legal litter. I mention race only as it applies to her using it to get where she is today and that is not baseless. Talk is cheap. Her quote about not bending the Constitution under any circumstance is what she did in the Cincinnati case. Tried to make equal results guaranteed rather than equal opportunity. posted by

anglo1, I don't think anyone can clean up your ealier post, so here I've cleaned up your 8.30 am post for you (just had to move some words around, and toss in a few of my own): My only concern is that the racist, sexist minority in the Senate, which has used Affirmative Action and government to set aside everything, and while making decisions based on politics against minorities rather than based on the rule of law will recognize the lack of an upside to protesting this excellent nomination.

I named one racist (R) senator already in the headline of this post ...well technically he had to quit the senate. But I doubt I could prove my point to you anymore then you can convince me that "...it was an easy choice for BO. She is so like his wife, a racist, sexist minority that has used Affirmative Action and government set asides to get everything she has all the while making decisions based on politics against white males rather than based on the rule of law.
