Site Stuff Q&A Open Thread 4/16/07

Bakersfield.com Community Content Coordinator Jason Sperber here!

New Users Click Here (hat-tip to TomW for the name and idea and to RogerA for the inspiration) is a place where B.commers can ask site-related, technical questions.

Confused about how things work here, or can't figure out how to do something?  Every Monday, I'll post an "open thread" blog entry here, and you can ask away.  BTW, "New Users" is in the title, but that doesn't mean that site veterans don't have questions, ideas, or complaints too -- everyone is welcome.

I'll do my best to answer your questions, and to ask those who know, if I don't.  But don't forget that your neighbors here are also an amazing resource who aren't shy to chime in with the fruits of their experience!

So, no matter if you're a newbie or you've been here a while, welcome!  And ask away!

So... I was wondering why there are some numbers on blogposts that don’t make sense—one, for example, shows the number of times the page has been viewed, but it’s less than the number of comments there, so what’s going on? Am I the only one noticing this?

Are you sure you aren't mistaking the number of times the poster's "profile" has been viewed vs. the number of posts on a particular blog thread?

Until the end of last week, the number of views recorded for blogposts was reflecting all pageviews.  That means that every time I refreshed a page to check out new comments in the course of my work, it registered as a pageview, giving a distorted number for those who like to keep track of how many times their posts have been viewed.  Now, that number reflects "unique viewers," so no matter how many times I refresh this page, for example, those refreshes are not being counted as new views.  This gives us a much more accurate way of collecting metrics re: blog post views.

Maybe this is what you're looking at:  one of Dusty's posts, at this moment, shows 43 comments (by 8 users) but only 27 views.  While this looks weird, all it means is that some folks are refreshing the page a lot, and those extra refreshes are no longer being counted as separate views.  Late last week, actually, right after this fix was launched, I remember seeing a comment by Katatak, I think, on one of Sam Heath's posts commenting that the number of views on the post had gotten smaller after a comment had been posted.  That's what happened and why.

BTW, another recent addition to our online tools might help with all the refreshing.  For those of you into RSS feeds and keeping up with new posts via feedreaders, now you can subscribe to the comment threads of individual blogposts here.  Look for the RSS button under the "leave a comment" button.  Click here for an explanation of RSS.

Cool new features, Jason.  I think this is going to be a boon to the community.

Thanks for the hat tip too.  You guys are doing great work but I also think that new users can be quickly overwhelmed.  My advice for new users is to jump in with both feet.  If you post a blog and no one reads it, keep posting.  Another tip is to make a first comment on your blog.  Some users mainly look at new comments rather than the recent blogs.

One thing I'd like to see "fixed" (it isn't broken now, but merely working as it was programmed to....): whenever you click on a specific comment on the "RecentBlogComments" page, you (usually but not always) get taken directly to the comment on the blog...... UNLESS the blog (thread) has more than one page, in which case you get dumped on the main blog (thread) page and have to click on the last page to get to the comment you wanted to read. Am I missing something?

Hey Matt--  Guess great minds think alike, huh?  :)  We're actually looking into that as we speak (the development team just IM'd about it this morning--I brought it up at a meeting last week).  Keep you posted.

I don't know Jason...... find me another "great mind" and I'll see if I agree with them.....   ;)  Until then I'll just chalk this up to "uncanny coincidence".....

HUH?  You talkin' to me willis?  How'd I get in on THIS one?  Or was that meant for someone else?

No no, sorry Nancy. "Cowboy up, nancy" is just a line. "Cowboy up" is a phrase, similar to "toughen up", designed to envoke the rough and tumble cowboy as the manliest of men. Calling him "nancy" was just a way to say that his behavior was "girlish", perhaps stereotypically so. I started out capitalizing "nancy", but changed it after quickly seeing the confusion it could have called. Sorry you got caught up in my making fun of Jason. I keep forgetting that not everybody has the same pop culture encyclopedia.

"Cowboy Up" is what they tell you at the Rodeo, when it's your turn to climb onto the Bull or Bronc, for your ride.

Tony..I'm familiar with the rodeo phrase, having been married to a cowboy, but couldn't figure out how I got in on it.  I'm not familiar with the "cowboy up" in the "toughen up" way through.  I sort of wondered if the nancy thing was, as Matt said, "girly" simply because I remember Frank called Raymond nancy on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Whew..glad I got out of that one.  By the way..I like the "waaambulance".  Good one.
